Summer camps and other enrichment programs kicked off this week with increased numbers of children participating.
Summer camps and programs in Meriden are not the only programs poised to welcome greater numbers of youth. Other state funding — through Connecticut’s share of federal American Rescue Plan Act monies — has been utilized to enhance other programs as well. According to the state Department of Education, some $12 million of that department’s COVID-19 relief funds has been distributed
COVID-19 relief monies have enabled Meriden officials to renew a program launched last year, in which the city offered vouchers, valued at $350 each, allowing local students to attend two-week-long summer programs at local camps free of charge. The overall funding set aside for this year’s “Get

It helped that she didn’t have to attend hours of training. She doesn’t have lots of free time. The most important thing is that you have a box with a lid. That is critical, she said.
That brings me to a friend’s recent adventure. This escapade centers around a turtle. She absolutely loves turtles (all animals, really), and so when asked to help a re-

She didn’t have to wait long for that first call. My friend goes to the address for the pick-up. It is about 7 p.m. There is still some light left to the day. When she arrives at the destination, she sees a group of people standing around a wagon. The turtle is a humongous snapper turtle. It is as big as a dorm fridge. My friend is 4 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs 110 pounds. You get the picture. Happily, the snapper was in a box. My friend’s car is small, about as small as she is. The men in the group open the hatch and hoist the box with the snapper in. There is no cover on the box. “Hmmm,” says my friend. She tells me she was optimistic though, because the turtle, while really large, fit snugly into the box. His little

She deliberately did not turn on the radio. She did hear scuffling. About three miles away from the destination, she looks up to check the rearview mirror. Oh no! Staring back at her, she sees the head of the turtle peeking at her over the backseat. His claws pulling him up as he is attempts to move into the backseat. She is panicking. Where does it think it is going? She knows she cannot pull the car over, there’s no shoulder or really anywhere with room to park. And she doesn’t even have a cover for the box. And remember, the snapper is bigger than she is. She does what any frightened woman with a snapping turtle in her car would do: she yells at it. “Get down, turtle,” she insists. “Get down right now!” Not unlike children and husbands, it doesn’t listen. She yells louder: “Get down!”

That got me thinking. During COVID, when we were in lockdown and off the streets, wildlife began to expand their territories. Now we humans are out on the roads again in large numbers. There lies the problem. If you are an animal lover, it is heartbreaking.

While driving around Cheshire lately, it seems to me there is an unfortunate number of local wildlife — opossum, skunks, rabbits, fox — that have been hit and killed by vehicles.
Wildlife can also fall out of trees. Such was the case with my squirrel adventure. One year on a visit to my mom who lived in Delaware, three baby squirrels fell out of a large tree. Their mom did not come back for them.

Tearing down what already exists before one truly understands why it exists in the first place is a recipe for disaster. Undoubtedly, there are institutions, policies, and overall concepts that require real alterations or to be outright abandoned. Yet, what history teaches us is that most institutions serve an important purpose, and most laws were enacted to deal with real issues that must be addressed.

Many of the problems that plague America at the moment are ones that have nipped at the heels of this country for generations.
They remain problems because their solutions are hard, not easy. Those who have come before us were forced to do most of the heavy lifting when it came to everything from race relations to economic equality. That work was never perfect nor ever complete, but it must be fully understood in order for the work to continue today. The teenagers who walked across the stage last week have the benefit of youth. They can bring a fresh perspective to old battles, and a renewed vigor to fight for a better world. But it’s important for all to remember that, graduating from high school is a first, not a last, step. One must be dedicated to being a learner before ever hoping to be an effective teacher. That means opening oneself up to all the information and opinions out there. It means engaging, in good faith, with those who disagree with you. See Graduates, A5

Graduates From A4
Graduates have already had to adapt and adjust to situations outside their control. The last two years have almost certainly challenged what they may have believed when it comes to a variety of issues. That’s a part of lifeeducation. One can’t truly learn without learning to admit you are wrong.
Students hear a lot this time of year of how they will “change the world” and how they are “our future.” All of it is correct. Each generation changes the world. Each generation is our future. The question is, what future will they shape? The CHS Class of 2022 has taken its first steps towards those answers, but if they
are to make a better tomorrow, they need to fully understand the intricacies of what has happened in the past. So, when you come to that fence, don’t just tear it down. Understand why it is there and who put it there. Then and only then can you decide what to do with it.

RENAISSANCE MAN
Health District UV exposure Everyone thinks about sun safety during the summer. But it’s important to protect yourself all year long — even on cloudy and hazy days. The sun, as well as tanning beds and sunlamps, gives off an invisible kind of radiation called ultraviolet rays. Too much exposure to UV rays can damage your skin and eyes, and lead to can-
cer. The hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. are the most dangerous for UV exposure. To play it safe, stay in the shade; use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protective factor (SPF) of 15 or higher; and wear full-coverage clothing, sunglasses and widebrimmed hats. Also, re-apply sunscreen throughout the day, and wear lotion or make-up with sunscreen already in it.

“Bartlett Contracting replaced the roof and rebuilt the back porch of my 1930s cape house in Cheshire. They provided clear, timely estimates, quick scheduling and completion of the work, durable yet elegant materials, and beautiful craftsmanship. I look forward to having them remodel my kitchen and bathroom, refinish my flooring, and replace my windows this summer. In the meantime, I warmly recommend them to other homeowners.”

Tips to get your kids away from the screen this summer With the weather getting warmer how can you find ways to get your kids away from their phones, video games and laptops? Check out some quick tips below:

Rethink your drink 1. Drink plenty of water. If you crave fizz, try seltzer. 2. Choose fat-free or 1% milk. If you prefer soy milk, choose the low-fat, light or unflavored variety. 3. Fruit juice isn’t as healthful as you may think. Whole fruit has fewer calories, and unlike juice, includes fiber. 4. Most sports/“energy” drinks are high in sugar and low in nutrients. Water is all
you need to stay hydrated, even while exercising. 5. If you drink coffee or tea, order it plain (practically calorie-free) and lightly flavor it yourself. At the store, check the labels on beverages you purchase. 6. If you do have a sugarsweetened drink, cut calories and save money by ordering a “small” instead of a “large.” If you drink juice, add some water or seltzer to cut calories (and make the drink last longer).

PREMIER DENTAL PC Wayton Open founder and director Matt Wayton is hoping this year’s tennis tournament at Southington High School, the 15th annual, can surpass previous participation records. The tournament is a benefit for dog rescues. Record-Journal file photo
For Wayton Open, the score’s 15-love twenty
SOUTHINGTON — The Wayton Open is entering its 15th year of tennis in Southington. Tournament director and founder Matt Wayton said the 2022 event, which is running from July 9-17 at Southington High School, could be a record-breaker. It will feature 14 divisions, ranging in age from players as young as fifth grade to senior citizens. Per tradition, proceeds will benefit dog rescues. Last year, the tournament gave $3,000 to One More Dog Rescue, $1,800 to Long Island Bulldog Rescue and $500 to Thank Dog Rescue. Since 2017, the tournament has donated $14,805 to rescue dogs. Last year saw the tournament’s third-largest field at 217 participants. The record is around 250 and, three weeks out here in 2022, Wayton said it is possible for the tournament to get up to 250 again. Entry fees are $25 for singles players and $50 for doubles. Registration is at Waytonopen.com.
Donations and sponsorships are also available on the tournament website.

CHESHIRE – Superintendent of Schools Jeff Solan admits that he has had to send the same type of letter to parents far too often over the last several years. In the aftermath of a mass shooting at a school in the U.S., Solan will contact parents to con-
cerns and assure them that the district is doing everything possible to ensure the safety of their children. Though Cheshire, fortunately, has never had to deal with circumstances such as those seen in Uvalde, Texas, where an 18year-old gunman killed 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School last month, the threat, Solan admitted, touches all schools and students.
“I worry that it has become in some ways normalized,” he continued. In the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown on Dec. 14, 2012, schools across the state began making safety improvements to limit access. In Cheshire, according to Solan, $5 million has been spent over the course of a decade to make improvements, including bullet-resistant film added to windows, the installation of “person traps” at the entrances to schools and the upgrading of video equipment and cameras around
“For kids, this has become much more commonplace,” said Solan. “Some generate a lot of media attention, but others only receive some (attention), where maybe there is some gunfire around schools.

REAL-WORLD EXPERIENCE The Cheshire Chamber of Commerce held a small gathering recently to thank their intern, Cheshire High School student Neve Stanziale, for her efforts in recent months. As part of CHS’s internship program, Stanziale welcomed the opportunity to learn from Chamber staff and members, and the feeling was mutual. “Neve not only learned from us, but shared her knowledge of social media and video production.
