Cheshire High School Class of 2021 valedictorian Ryan Shan gives much credit to his parents for his stand-out academic career.

“I attribute a lot of my success to my parents. They are the ones who enable me and encourage me to pursue my passions. From countless car rides to support at competitions and games, I wouldn’t be half the person I am

without them,” he said. Shan also found success in a number of extracurricular interests at CHS, including tennis and music. See Shan, A3

Tenants are expected to begin moving into two new luxury apartment buildings near downtown Cheshire this month.

“I was talking to a customer and she said it was her third time here that day,” Torello shared.

Farm hand Ben Wildstien, 17, picks strawberries at Old Bishop Farms, 500 South Meriden Road, Cheshire.

The Cheshire business is home to a variety of fruits and vegetables, pies, donuts, and ice cream, all made on site. It’s now peak strawberry picking

season. With two fields, the farm welcomes nearly 20 to 40 families each day on weekends.

“The value of this is its alternative housing in the center of town and provides interest for a range of people. Young people, empty nesters, people who have sold their home but don't want to move out of town,” Milone said.

Hamlet on Highland is the first development to be completed under the town’s residential infill regulations, said John Milone, who helped write the regulations as then president of Milone & MacBroom Inc. The change allowed for higher density residential developments on parcels smaller than two acres and within two miles of the Cheshire Town Hall along Route 10. Milone continues to be involved in the development as U.S. Sector Leader of SLR Consulting, which acquired Milone & MacBroom Inc. last year. The firm was contracted for the project’s site planning, engineering and landscape architecture.

The 11-units in the Hamlet on Highland development at 138 Highland Ave. range from 1,000 square foot, one bedroom apartments costing $1,950 a month to 1,639 square foot, three bedroom apartments with a monthly rent of $2,950. Developer Sheila Fiordelisi said leases have already been signed for all but three of the units and tenants are scheduled to start moving into one of the buildings today, Thursday, July 1.

team and they were devastated,” Boccuzzio said.

For generations, American Legion baseball has been a rite of passage for players ages 19 and under.

Southington has literally gone from all to nothing. Post 72 was the state Legion champion in 2018 and state runner-up in 2019, advancing to the New England regional tournament both years.

In Southington and Cheshire, that tradition is over for the summer — and perhaps forever.

Cheshire has also seen considerable success in recent years. Post 92 was 25-9 in 2019 and Zone 3 champion for the ninth straight season. Cheshire won the state championship in 2014.

Southington Post 72 and Cheshire Post 92, two programs that have experienced state and regional success, especially in the past decade, have both folded for 2021. Southington held a tryout in June, on the Monday following the end of the high school state tournament, and only two players showed up. “It’s an end of era; it’s sad,” said Post 72 coach Marc Verderame. “I feel bad for the town. Vito Boccuzzio, the Post 72 general manager, said, historically, 14-18 members of the Southington baseball team show up at tryouts.

This year, it was one player from Southington and one from Cheshire. Most Southington players, Boccuzzio said, are in-

stead suiting up for AAU teams. Others are playing for the Southington Black Knights — formerly the Southington Shock — in the

Connecticut Collegiate Baseball League. “I contacted the Southington American Legion to tell them there was no baseball

“We brought a lot of pride to the town, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to combat AAU and the general state of summer baseball right now,” said Verderame, referring to the rise of travel teams. “It’s been transferred into a corporate kind of game. It takes away from the old school kind of ways. It’s sad. The championships and excellence weren’t enough, and everything has gone another way.” “I’m proud of what we did,” Verderame added. “I was always proud of the SouthingSee Legion, A11

Legendary softball pitcher meets fans in Cheshire By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen

Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame member Joan Joyce stopped by Cheshire Public Library June 23 for a meet and greet along with Tony Renzoni, author of “Connecticut Softball Legend, Joan Joyce.” Joyce is the greatest female athlete in history, hands down, Renzoni told attendees at the library program, held in the Mary Baldwin community room.

Born and raised in Waterbury, Joyce was a longtime member of the Waterbury Raybestos Brakettes softball team. One of her most notable achievements is striking out baseball legends Hank Aaron and Ted Williams. She also excelled in volleyball, basketball and golf. Joyce was inducted into the Connecticut's Women's Basketball Hall of Fame and played golf on the LPGA circuit for almost two decades.

She has led the Florida Atlantic University softball program since the early 90s. Eileen Topizer, reference librarian at the Cheshire library, was a softball player in her youth and is a huge fan of Joyce. “She broke the mold and led the way for other women,” she said. Sharon Cioffi and Kathy Fracker lined up to buy books and get photos with Joyce at the library program. See Softball, A11

Cioffi, who is 82, watched the Connecticut Falcons when Joyce played for and co-owned the pro softball team. “She was a marvelous pitcher,” Cioffi recalled. Fracker brought a softball Joyce autographed for her nearly five decades ago. “She signed it March 29, 1973,” said Fracker, who had the ball signed a second time by Joyce.

“At one point, they would play Legion, but a lot of the players feel committed to continued to play on their AAU team. They recruit early and often, and we can’t keep up with that. That was really the downfall.” Verderame coached Post 72 for 10 years and totaled a 227-64 record. Post 72 won its zone in 2012 for the first time since 1994, then made it to the state championship game in 2013 before falling to Branford.

Southington reached the pinnacle in 2018. That year, Post 72 swept Ellington in the state finals and advanced to the semifinals of the New England Regional in Worcester, Mass. “Never in a million years did I think we wouldn’t be able to field a team with all of the pride we brought to the town," Verderame said. “But we could see the writing on the wall. I just hoped it ended differently. We reached two state championship games and then COVID happens. “It’s hard to imagine this happening to a town like Southington, but it just goes to show that there’s no one immune to the privatization of summer baseball.”

Verderame said he’s heard from many of his former players who shared their dismay about Southington no longer having a Legion team. “I’m proud of all of the kids over the years," Verderame said. “We won five games in 2016 and the state title the next year. One of my players shot me a message, ‘You can take away the program, but you can't take away our rings.’ They were all like my little brothers. They still call me to talk about the good old days. That’s what I take the most pride in.” Is there hope for Legion returning to Southington? Right now, Verderame isn’t optimistic.

“We live in a different world,” he said. “You can’t tell kids where to play and there are so many AAU teams around town. In 1997, there were three AAU teams and now there are over 100.” Boccuzzio, on the other hand, is hopeful. “No season this year, but we are still holding out hope for next year,” the Post 72 GM said. “I’m hoping to come up with a plan to start in the fall and work on it during the winter and see if we can turn it around. “We want to get our players back; we want to play again. These kids love playing for Marc.”

so that’s good, too. We also wear tick-repellent clothing and hats. Let’s just say, we are stylin’ for this early in the morning. And off we go, heading down the side of Prospect Ridge. To the left is a running stream that keeps us company with its gurgling and splashing until it tucks into a few slabs of stone and disappears. We don’t meet up with it for another 15 minutes or so. That reminds me, this hike is less than an hour, and if you don’t dawdle, you can do it in 30 minutes. It does get steep, so make sure you have your good knees on that day.

ing it’s all easy going on this trail though. Invasive plants such as multi-flora rosa try its best to narrow the path. We carry hand snips with us. We also give a wide berth to any barberry we happen on (it’s the host plant for ticks). You also need to watch for a rock or two under foot as you head down to the base where the terrain changes to a woodland setting with a very wide path, likely an old logging trail. At this point in the walk, we are at the base of the ridge among towering trees. Huge slabs of rock are strewn about against the incline of the ridge. The birds are different down here, too. We hear a Scarlet Tanager way up on the treetops. Altogether in this trip, we have heard a northern waterthrush, an eastern wood pewee, a great crested flycatcher, a winter wren, a veery, a black and white warbler, an ovenbird and a Rose-breasted Grosbeak. The bird block my friend monitors ends here. Reluctantly, we turn around and head back up to our car. However, if you choose to go forward and go along the path, and you are free to do so, you are on public trails at the base of Prospect Ridge. Enjoy.
