Whether you might benefit from or even need a PDL order will depend upon your individual situation. An experienced lawyer can work with you to make an analysis considering the possible benefits against the cost, delay, increased acrimony and other factors so that you can make an informed choice to get the best divorce outcome and value.

sleeping outside on tarps. The peak is the highest mountain wholly located within the state and the Appalachian Trail crosses it.

Carol Langley turns 80 this year. As she’s done for decades, Langley plans to continue her hike along the Appalachian Trail this season, perhaps logging another 90 miles. She’s spent so much time hiking there she’s even earned a sobriquet, the “Silver Queen,” from fellow trekkers.

Since then, Langley said, “I have been outdoors forever.”

Langley’s story was detailed in a recent Record-Journal article by contributor Joy VanderLek. Langley has completed the length of the Appalachian Trail in Georgia and has 20 miles left in North Carolina. This year, her hiking group plans to traverse portions of southwest Virginia.

Scouts hone skills on trip to Maine Hiking, canoeing, fishing, and camping are the stuff summers are made of and Cheshire’s BSA Troop 92 did all that and more. The group of 16, made up of first-year scouts to Eagle Scouts about to turn 18, headed to Maine for the adventure in late June. First the group hiked to the top of Mt. Tom, a five-mile excursion, followed by canoeing the Saco River, starting in Fryeburg, Maine. “We canoed 33 miles down the river,” said Joe Giuliano, an assistant scoutmaster with Troop 92. “It was three days and three nights that we set up camp alongside the river, and cooked our own meals.” Highlights of the trip included seeing bald eagles and beavers, a porcupine, and a snapping turtle.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHESHIRE HUMAN SERVICES DEPARTMENT In the past two years many of us have faced tremendous challenges and as a result we are seeing an increase in mental health issues in people across the life span. Anxiety and depression have become much more common and more visible. As we emerge from the isolation and chaos of the pandemic the anxiety and fear that many of us have experienced will stay with us and seeking help and support will be critical for many. This is the first of a 6-part series of messages from the Cheshire Human Services Department designed to raise awareness around mental health and self-care and identify available resources for help.

TIPS FOR COPING WITH STRESS AND ANXIETY Participate In social and community activities. Social interaction and a sense of giving to your community enhance self-esteem and reduce stress. Take care of yourself. Get regular exercise , eat nourishing food and maintain a healthy weight

Stress can be defined as the brain’s response to any demand, it can be mild and relatively harmless, or extreme and traumatic.

Participate In activities you enjoy. Have you always wanted to learn a new language? Take up ballroom dancing? Mentor a child? Now is the time! (And activities like these will also help your brain.)

Focus on addressing our time’ problems Instead of feeling helpless about them. Think of them as challenges” or “tests” rather than as insurmountable obstacles.

Stay focused on positive things and avoid negative self talk such as “ I can’t do that” or ‘I’m too old”. VVhen your self talk is negative , you will feel more stress Instead of thinking what you can’t do, remember what you can do.

Learn and use relaxation techniques and meditation. If you are a caregiver, make use of support and education groups, as well as respite care , which provides time off for caregivers

For more information and resources that can help contact the Cheshire Human Services Department at (203) 271-6690

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis dial 211 for help. This message is sponsored by the Cheshire Youth & Human Services Committee.

253411

The effects of stress tend to build up over time, and with chronic stress the impact can be significant on one’s emotional and physical well-being.

Remember stressful events that you successfully coped with In the past and repeat what worked before.

243146

Many of us underestimate the power of stress and ignore its impact on our emotional and physical health.

Connect with the people who are most meaningful to you. People with friends tend to be happier than those without. Stable social relations help you adjust to changes such retiring moving and losing loved ones.

Camping places to visit this summer By Lau Guzmán Record-Journal staff

Assessor’s office lists tax exemptions Below is a listing of the various exemptions requiring filings for the Town of Cheshire’s Oct. 1, 2022 Grand List: VETERANS EXEMPTIONSVeterans who have not filed their original DD214 papers or a certified copy with the Town Clerk must do so before Oct. 1, 2022 if they wish to be eligible for the military exemption. The veteran’s exemption for specified periods of service with the armed forces provides a 1,500 reduction in the assessed value of property owned by a qualified veteran. Disabled veterans should submit their disability rating from the Veterans Adminis-

tration to the Assessor’s office by Oct. 1, 2022. These veterans are eligible for a reduction in the assessed value of their property ranging from $3,500 to $5,000 depending upon their degree of disability. ADDITIONAL VETERANS AND LOCAL VETERANS EXEMPTION- The additional veteran’s and local veteran’s exemptions are available to qualified veterans who meet certain income requirements. These two programs provide an increase in assessment reduction beyond the standard veteran exemption. The deadline for filing applications is Oct. 1, 2022.

Find healthy food, peaceful escape through foraging By Cris Villalonga-Vivoni Record-Journal staff

Under the early morning summer sun, Amy Demers patiently waited for the other amateur foragers to arrive at Bluff Point Park in Groton. This was her eleventh time hosting a free foraging walk since founding the CT Foraging Club in early 2021. Although Demers also hosts foraging classes, the free walks are for people with some foraging experience. Demers usually doesn't stray too far from her home in Wallingford, but every once in a while, she likes to forage through different parts of the state to meet new people and find new wild plants.

Slowly, the foragers emerged from the parking lot. These were people from all different walks of life — there were solo foragers, a family of foragers, dragged-alongby-friends foragers, novice and expert foragers. Within five minutes of starting the walk, the group had already stopped twice to pick some autumn olives. Although Demers was technically the leader, some participants took charge, sharing their knowledge with everyone and pointing out which plants were edible. One of the first plants the group tried was black birch growing on the edges of the trail. There were audible gasps as everyone nibbled at the plant’s root, tasting root beer even though the plant smells like spearmint. "Unless you forage, you're never going to be able to try those unique flavors," Demers said. See Foraging, A51

"It's almost like a scavenger hunt," she said. "If you go outside and you're on a hike or just walking in the woods and you can actually identify things and then take some home and cook them, it definitely makes hiking and being out in nature a lot more

exciting."

What is foraging? According to the Khan Academy, humanity has been foraging for 95% of our species' existence. It is based on the hunter-gatherer tradition, but the rise of farming, supermarkets and restaurants practically eradicated the need around the world.

The North American Mycological Association saw 60% membership growth during the pandemic and many of its affiliated foraging clubs nearly doubled in membership, according to NAMA’s chief operating officer Bruch Reed. Mycology is the branch of biology concerned with fungi. NAMA, founded in 1959, has about 2,200 members in the United States, Canada and Mexico. "Mushrooms, we're discovering increasingly, are the organisms that hold the world together in terms of the chain of life," Reed said. "Like an apple is the fruit of

aware of park rules and regulations. For example, on March 29, 1986, Brill was arrested by undercover police and park rangers for eating a dandelion. He was charged with criminal mischief and re-

Although most people go to hiking trails and forest reserves to forage, "Wildman" Steve Brill says that some of the best finds can be right outside your door in a yard or local park. Brill has been foraging in New York City’s Central Park for over 30 years and knows all the best spots to find edible wild weeds full of nutrients. "The biggest enemy of the planet in the urban parks are the lawn mowers," said Brill. "But they are deathly afraid of coming too close to lampposts, sidewalks, and boulders … so those areas have plenty of the common, renewable edible weeds." Some other places for urban forage are fields and lawns, hedgerows and on the edges of organic farms, meadows and wetlands. In these vast, open spaces, you can find numerous clovers, chicken of the woods mushrooms, or berries if you look hard enough.

The pandemic, however, has played a role in transforming foraging from a unique hobby with few practitioners, to a popular pastime as more and more people turn to nature for peace and a source of accessible, healthy food.

He explained that many mushrooms help decompose animals and other plants to help create nutrient-rich soil and feed the wild vegetation around them.

However, he recommends avoiding areas with high vehicle traffic, such as highways, and areas potentially covered in pesticides.

Health benefits Wild foods and mushrooms have been used for medicinal purposes for centuries in Eastern culture, especially in Asian countries, Reed said. Insect workshop aims to help pollinators

This program is for ages 6 to 60 and up. Program size is limited and registration is required. Register at cheshirepollinatorpathway@ gmail.com. Dugas and participants will explore the world of New England’s butterflies, bumblebees and other pollinators and insects. The free program will take a deep dive into the life of bugs and insects, why they are so important to humans and life on earth. Dugas will offer insect identification tips, and lead members of the audience to search for butterfly eggs and monarch caterpillar chrysalis cases. Participants also will learn which native plants host which insects, learn the vari-

ous jobs of bugs, and discover the daily life of a bumblebee and other insects in this free, hour-long outdoor program. This program is made possible by The Claire C. Bennitt Watershed Fund, Inc. The Claire C. Bennitt Watershed Fund was established in 1999, with the mission to protect water quality by acquiring watershed land and promoting environmental education. The mission of the Cheshire Pollinator Pathway focuses on helping pollinators by creating native plant waystations, by educating the public on garden and lawn care best practices without the use of pesticides and by serving as a resource for those interested in learning more about native plants. — Submitted

hosting foraging classes in low-income communities to teach residents how to access nutritious food and supplement whatever they get from grocery stores. Soon after founding the CT Foraging Club, Demers connected with two chefs, Jason Ehlers and Dylan Siedenburg, to create a Foraging to Table experience. She hosts an expedition and teaches how to identify different plants by touch and smell. Then, the Ditto Cooks, as they call themselves on Instagram, bring out a plate featuring all the food the group foraged. Demers forages before the event to provide Ehlers and Siedenburg with the key ingredients and they make up the rest with produce from local farmer's markets. "It's hard to find a lot of people in the United States that really realize that what they eat is killing or helping

In addition, the Ditto Chefs emphasized how eating wild foods from your local ecosystem can help boost immunity, especially for allergies. "When you think about nature as an ecosystem, everything is balanced," said Ehlers. "If you live in a specific part of Connecticut and eat honey from that part, that'll help your allergies. Also, foraged food just tastes better, they said. "The idea of using what's around you and utilizing what you have versus taking it from somewhere else puts an aspect into flavor," Ehlers explained.
