The Board of Education has extended the superintendent of schools’ contract through the 2024-2025 school year with an increase in salary of 2.75 percent. The updated agreement with Superintendent Jeff Solan was unanimously approved by the board June 30. With the salary increase, Solan will now earn $221,446 annually. Solan’s group term life insurance policy also was adjusted to three times his annual salary, up from 2.5 times his annual salary. The board also will compensate Solan at a rate of $2,000 annually for the purchase of additional life insurance. Board member Tim White, who chairs the BOEs Personnel Committee, said a few meetings were held regarding Solan’s contract and that the board was “generally happy” with the superintendent’s performance over the past year.

CATS Gymnastics wrapped up a big season with several state championships over the season, which concluded in late May. The Cheshire gym’s Level 3 team took first place in seven of its nine meets. The squad was highlighted by Cheshire’s Tess Cianchetti, 11, and Ashley Syzdek, 10, and Bristol’s Everley Norris, 8, placing first in the all-around in most of those meets. The Level 3 team started the season with seven athletes and finished with six after one of the gymnasts moved away. “It was their first year competing as a seven-man squad and the top three scores count,” CATS coach Wes Norris said. The program, started in 2021, comes at a time where many students missed out on hands-on educational opportunities. Aiming to provide children with engaging learning experiences, the program also makes it easier for low-income families to access the state’s cultural resources. “Free museum admission is a great way to spark children’s curiosity and keep them engaged before next school year, continuing their learning at no cost to mom and dad,” said Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz.
