Guided by Goats provides safe space for kids
By Cris Villalonga-Vivoni Record-Journal staff
CHESHIRE Art and animals have always been a positive outlet of expression for Bella Gladue. So, when her mother, Alicia Gladue, learned about Guided by Goats, which combined both of Bella’s passions with therapy, she immediately signed them up.
During their first day, the two enjoyed the Cheshire farm’s first ever Teddy Bear Picnic on July 12. The day was filled with music, mud, pinecone paint brushes and
rock painting. Clutching her stuffed animal closely, Bella sang, danced and painted.
Executive Director Daniel Morton founded Guided by Goats, a nonprofit, in 2022 with the goal to create a safe space for kids with autism to develop their behavioral and social skills outside of a clinical setting. Morton was inspired by his work as a board-certified behavioral analyst and home therapist.

Cherie Stenson’s latest burst of creativity is located on the lower level of the Cheshire Public Library. Stenson, the administrative director at CPL, turned her passion for ephemera crafting into a beautiful wedding dress tableau. The common definition of the word “ephemera” is: “the minor transient documents of everyday life.”
Stenson’s wedding ensemble is made up of the pages of a single book. She said the project “took forever.”

"Aged 12 years and distilled through late nights on Bleecker Street, the downtown man with rural roots blends big city bravado with backroads grit. The result – a signature sound of skyscraper Americana that takes the listener on a Kerouac road trip." – jefftuohy.com

Fireflies are doing some mingling this summer
By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen
I obsess over things. For instance, I’ve obsessed about shoes – shoes I think I need or would like to have residing in my closet. I also have been obsessed on occasion about having the occasion for a free afternoon to read a book (and maybe the attention span to actually sit for a moment).
Recently though, I’ve been obsessing over fireflies. In fact, I’ve been obsessing about them for the past few years. It’s only because I have not seen fireflies in my yard for the longest time.
That is, I haven’t seen any until this year. Around the first of July, I have seen not one or two, or even a handful of these little flashlights. I’ve seen kaboodles of them. Fireflies, by the way, are not flies but beetles, and there’s more than 200 species. Many larvae have the unique ability to produce light from organs in
their abdomens. Not all continue to have this ability as they mature to their adult stage. The word lámp from the ancient Greek means to shine.
Well, this summer, my backyard is ablaze!
I am thrilled. It’s also a bit surprising that I am not the only one. Friends say they are finding the same thing in their yards. Until now, all of us noticed many summers without fireflies. This year, though, friends throughout Cheshire and in Southington
are reporting lots of fireflies.
My friend Barbara, who thought fireflies were going extinct, is over-the-moon about the lightshow in her backyard this year: “Isn’t it heavenly!” she exclaimed. It definitely is. But I wonder why we’re so lucky this year.
Time to check in with an expert or two. My local go-to is Katherine Dugas from the CT Agricultural Experiment Station. “It’s tough to quantify what we see locally,” she said, “but recent reports suggest worldwide declines in insect
populations, including fireflies.”
Dugas said there are multiple threats to fireflies, including lack of habitat, light pollution and pesticides. “Firefly larvae feed on other invertebrates, such as other insect larvae, worms, slugs and snails,” she explained. (Who knew, eh?)
“Good firefly habitat needs robust prey species populations,” Dugas said. “Overapplying broad-spectrum pesticides to landscapes and gardens suppresses local, nontarget populations, which can include fireflies and their food.”

Do You Need a Trust?
According to the 2023 Wills and Estate Planning Survey by Caring.com, only 34 percent of Americans have an estate plan. The primary reasons respondents gave for not participating in estate planning are procrastination, believing they need more assets, and not knowing how to make an estate plan.
An estate plan is a comprehensive set of legal documents and strategies that organizes assets for a person’s death or disability. Trusts are legal arrangements used in estate planning, alongside wills and advance directives.
A trust allows one person, the trustee, to manage funds and assets for one or multiple beneficiaries. Trusts can be revocable or irrevocable. Revocable trusts allow the grantor – the person creating and funding the trust – to change it during their lifetime. With an irrevocable trust, the grantor cannot make modifications. Assets no longer belong to the grantor. Such trusts can help someone qualify for government benefits, reduce their taxable estate, and transfer wealth.
A primary benefit of trusts is that they allow individuals to bypass probate, which can be time-consuming and costly. The court excludes property placed in trust from a probated estate.
According to some sources, probate costs can consume 5-10 percent of an estate’s value. The process can also take months to years to conclude, burdening family members.
Transferring assets outside probate via a trust also maintains privacy. Trusts stay outside probate and remain confidential.

Long-standing support of St. Bridget School continues
Contributed
The friendship between Viron Rondos and Father Jeffrey Romans began years ago when both were working in Litchfield County – Rondos, as a restaurant owner, and Romans as a parish priest.
The friendship has grown over the years, and has led
to a new relationship, one benefiting St. Bridget School in Cheshire.
As he has done every year since opening Viron Rondo Osteria in Cheshire, recently, Rondos donated funds to St. Bridget – this year $7,000 – to help the parochial school cover costs that its operating budget does not.
“We are so very grateful
– beyond grateful – to Viron and all he has done over the years, ” said Romans, pointing out that the business owner’s monetary donations have been used to purchase computers, classroom materials, and more, for the school. Also, along with donating gift cards and other items for St. Bridget School fundraisers, Rondos has sponsored an annual family night at his restaurant with proceeds from dinner service going to the school.
“We have given tens of thousands of dollars to the school since I opened my restaurant in 2014,” said Rondos, noting that the combination of his faith, his friendship with Romans and his commitment to helping
others contribute to his support.
“I just want to help. It is used for a good cause, and I am glad I can do something for St. Bridget and Father Romans,” said Rondos, whose generosity is wellknown to non-profit organizations in the area.
From A5 Joy
Light pollution can also interfere with fireflies ability to signal; to communicate with one another.
The Humane Gardener Nancy Lawson, also the author of “Wildscapes” calls signaling “sexting.” By flashing their love lights, fireflies find their mates. And as I can testify, this summer my backyard has apparently become the meet-up hotspot for fireflies to connect.
Now, there is another reason fireflies flash. Ready for it?
They are known to eat one another.
Eww.
Okay, back to the point here: when outdoor spaces like backyards, sidewalks, driveways and gardens are illuminated with floodlights or decorative lights, fireflies are not able to find one another. If they can’t find one another, that means no fireflies.
In the past few years, my family has made steps toward being less heavyhanded with these and other co-inhabitants of the planet. We leave the leaves. That’s because that’s where fireflies live. Our yard also has layers of cover (grasses, shrubs, small and mature trees).
I get a kick from knowing female fireflies will find a comfy spot on a tall blade of grass or a small shrub in my yard and spend the evening watching the big show. Who knows. If she finds “the” one (at least for that particular night), she’ll flash back. And the rest is history.
If you want to learn more about fireflies, check out firefly.org.

Cheshire resident serving up sliders in South Meriden
By Ciara Hooks Record-Journal staff
MERIDEN Fusaro’s Kitchen and Provisions has started serving up sliders out of the Village Barn, representing a dream come true for the two brothers behind the venture.
Andrew “Andy” Fusaro teamed up with his brother Evan Fusaro to open Fusaro’s Kitchen and Provisions.
“My brother is my business partner. He’s here to help whenever he can,” said Andrew Fusaro, co-owner of Fusaro’s Kitchen. “Evan is my older brother and has always been a big inspiration to me. I always say I’m looking up to him while looking down, because he’s shorter than me.”
Andy and Evan came from humble beginnings and are big on family, thus the decision for the restaurant’s name.
“Silver City Slider Company was a name we were bounc-
ing around at first, but we wanted our first venture to be named after family because family comes first,” said Andy Fusaro, a Cheshire resident. “We were born with two parents that always had two jobs. And when I

So being kind of presented in that household watching my two parents do whatever they needed to do to provide for us was awesome, very admirable. So for me to be able to come down here and do this I'm kind of following in their footsteps of trying to provide more for my family and my brother is trying to provide more for his.”
Fusaro’s added its own twist on the famous slider sandwiches.
“My biggest rule that I always live by, it kind of stuck with me, is KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid, and that’s something that I always repeat to myself,” Andy Fusaro said. “Sometimes my creative brain can kind of drift off a little bit and I have to remind myself to just Keep It Simple Stupid; so with that our menu is simple and a mini version of everything.”

They created a menu that kept everything cost effective, allowed them to produce quality products and could be done quickly.
Fusaro’s offers Silver City Sliders, Fried Chicken Sliders, The Veg Sliders, fries, and coleslaw. All the menu items are made with the same seasonings to give them that same great taste. Without giving away the secret, Andy did share that it is a mayo and mustard based sauce.
Andy has always loved cooking. After running a number of restaurants, he thought it was time to go off on his own and finally own his own restaurant and become that chef he always wanted to be growing up.
“I sat down with my wife and she was like, ‘whatever you need, whatever I can do to help let me know’ even though she was eight months pregnant at the time,” Andy Fusaro said. “And then when my brother
kind of heard that I was having conversations with the owners down here he reached out and was like, ‘I want to be a part of it in any way possible.’ He believes in me and it’s kind of cool of him making that investment in me, supporting me as a brother and also a financial partner which is great.”
Andy signed the lease for the space inside Village Barn located at 16 River Road in
April. Fusaro’s had its Grand Opening on Saturday, July 1.
The Fusaro brothers were born and raised in Meriden. They graduated from Platt High School. Andy Fusaro is a husband and father of two.
He attended Johnson and Wales University where he received his degree in business. He learned how to manage restaurants from The Chow Fun Food Group.
Evan Fusaro is a husband and soon-to-be father. He graduated from Bay Path University. He is a cancer survivor; Combat Experienced Army Medic; Physician's Assistant at Connecticut Children's Hospital and an Eagle Scout.
“When he interviewed at Connecticut’s Children’s Hospital and they asked ‘why here of all places?’ He said, ‘I’m an alumni, you guys saved my life when I was a kid and I've always wanted to give back,” Andy Fusaro explained. “So his job came full circle. And he’s achieving his dream at the same time helping me achieve mine.”
Fusaro’s Kitchen and Provisions is open Thursdays 6 to 11 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays 6 p.m. to midnight.

public [because] these behaviors are being looked at in a negative way," Morton said. "I just wanted to create a community space where they can come, and we can do social skills and [practice] some real-life experiences."
Animals and art
Guided by Goats is currently set up in Morton's one-anda-half-acre backyard in Cheshire with two goat paddocks, a chicken coop and a duck sanctuary. The play area is next to the goat paddock and has multiple stations with nature-inspired art activities, like rock painting and painting with flowers or pinecones. Instructions are taped to each station so the kids can go from station to station without needing an adult to explain what they need to do.
The program is intentionally unstructured so the kids can explore what interests them in a safe space.
The stars of the shows – the goats – are brought out one by one on leashes to eat weeds and interact with the children. On the other hand, baby goats are passed from person to person for snuggles and brush time.
Older kids often go inside the paddocks with an adult to feed and brush the goats according to Morton. The kids can also enter the chicken and duck coops with an adult.
The farm hosts multiple playgroups weekly for children of different ages and abilities to interact and socialize. The playgroups specifically for kids with autism have many of the same activities, but there are
specialists to help the kids develop their speech, behavioral and motor skills.
Larger events, like the Teddy Bear Picnic, are organized to encourage interaction between kids of all abilities.
The most popular station at the Teddy Bear picnic was the Mud Kitchen. Stocked with bowls, measuring cups, pots and plates, the kid chefs' hand mixed dirt and water to make a large amount of mud. They would then follow laminated recipes to bake either mud cake, dirt pie, nature donuts or earth cookies.
In addition to the normal stations, a handful of bearthemed activities were specifically created for the Teddy Bear picnic, like homemade cinnamon play dough and storytime with a bear as the main character.
The music therapist, Brenda Tousignant, changed the lyrics of iconic children's songs so they were bear themed. So, "five monkeys jumping on the bed" became "five bears jumping on the bed."
At one point, Tousignant encouraged kids and parents alike to get on their feet for the "Teddy Bear Dance" as a way to "wiggle away the waggle."
She then passed out different instruments so that the kids could rhythmically follow along as they sang about a farmer who had a bear named Bingo.
Therapy through nature
The therapeutic benefits of nature, especially animals, is what drives the program, Morton said.
Therapy animals can help children with autism socialize by acting as a buffer between them and other people, according to the United Disabilities Services.
Typically, therapy animals include household pets, like dogs, guinea pigs and cats, or more exotic animals, like dolphins, horses and lla-

Goats
Morton said they landed on goats as therapy animals because of their calm temperament and how well they get along with the kids. He described how one kid connected with the goats and spent the entire day brushing and cuddling them.
Program Director of Guided by Goats and Morton's wife, Rhiannon Morton, has seen how animals benefit behavioral and mental health. She explained that their daughter, Charlie, was born during the pandemic and was extremely shy. Since opening Guided by Goats, Charlie has slowly built up her social confidence by participating in the different playgroups throughout the week.
"I've always seen the benefit of animals," Rhiannon said. "Having empathy and care for those creatures, so I always loved it."
The nature-inspired activities can also be used as a therapeutic outlet to build
social skills, develop fine motor skills, and improve sensory regulation, said Bethany Walker, occupational therapist and newest Guided by Goats specialist group member.
Although she is still in the planning stages, Walker said her goal is to create sensoryfriendly activities focusing on developing occupational skills like flexibility and communication. For example, Walker said stacking logs and sticks so that they don't tumble over helps develop problem-solving skills and how to lift heavier objects. Other building activities Walker plans to incorporate include building Fairy Gardens and drawing in the dirt. She said her goal is to create activities that can be replicated in their own backyards once they go home.
The second goal of the specialists is to answer questions and provide resources. Morton said he wants the visits to be a "mental health recharge" for parents since their kids can play in a safe space while working on their behavioral skills.

Building up
There are big plans in the works for Guided by Goats, Morton said. He wants to expand the farm physically to be wheelchair accessible and have the space to host larger events like birthdays and school field trips. He explained that having more space can also let them develop more physical activities for the kids like hiking with goats.
In addition, Morton plans to create more job skills opportunities for adults with autism by opening a farmstand to sell fresh produce. Lastly, developing on-site resources for parents is another major goal. For example, opening rooms for private family therapy sessions and day programs.
“I’m excited that I’ve already helped some families find some happiness and some hope and give them a couple hours of the day where they can relax and appreciate life,” Morton said. “It’sa space for families to unwind and enjoy their community and feel like they belong.”

Jon Smardin
CHESHIRE - Jon Smardin, 78, of Cheshire, beloved husband of Joanne Smardin, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on July 14, 2023. Prior to their move to Connecticut in 2020, they spent many happy retirement years living in Rhode Island. Jon was born on July 21, 1944, in New York to the late Sidney and Molly Smardin. When he was five years old, the family moved to Norwalk, where he grew up and attended local schools.
A dedicated family man, he spent countless hours volunteering on the board of the local Red Cross chapter, as Past President of the Silvermine Association and coaching his children’s sports and activities. He was everpresent with his camera to capture all of the family’s good times.
Jon was personable, friendly, caring and had a wonderful sense of humor. After a successful career in corporate finance, he found time for his favorite pastimes. He was a diehard golfer, a baseball coach and umpire. Jon was a skilled woodworker and craftsman who could build just about anything.
Jon and Joanne greatly enjoyed traveling and some of their adventures

Chesprocott: Tick disease increasing in the Northeast
From the Chesprocott Health District:
Tick season is here. And along with Lyme disease there is another tickborne illness – babesiosis – rearing its ugly head. Symptoms are like that of Lyme disease but can be more severe and longer-lasting.
“Babesiosis is another tick-borne disease that we hear about, in addition to Lyme disease, anaplasmosis and others, ” stated Dr. Bobbi Pritt, director of the Mayo Clinic Clinical Parasitology Laboratory. “Babesiosis is a parasitic disease transmitted by ticks. It’s caused primarily by Babesia microti in the U.S., and that’s transmitted by the same tick that transmits Lyme disease. ”
The most common symptoms of babesiosis are a combination of: severe flu-like symptoms such as a high fever (up to 104 degrees), chills and sweats, particularly night sweats; general discomfort or feeling unwell; intense headache; muscle and joint pain; loss of appetite; nausea; fatigue. These symptoms can appear within one to nine
weeks, or even several months after a person has been infected. Some people with babesiosis experience no symptoms.
To avoid tick bites, Dr. Pritt recommends the “ABCs” of prevention: Avoid – You want to avoid the areas where ticks are found. In the northeast, that means areas in the woods where there’s brush, leaf litter and tall grass; Bug spray – Use it when you’re outdoors and think you’re going to be exposed to tick bites or
mosquito bites; Cover up –Wear protective clothing. If you have clothing over your skin, ticks won’t be able to bite you. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends using a bug spray that contains DEET (30 percent) or picaridin. You also could use bug spray that has oil of lemon eucalyptus in it. For more information, visit cdc.gov.
Chesprocott Health District serves the towns of Cheshire, Prospect and Wolcott.
