The Cheshire Citizen In the aftermath of the Uvalde, Texas school shoot ing, and feeling a deep sense of urgency, two ministers at the First Congregational Church of Cheshire wanted to act. Rev. Dr. James Camp bell and Rev. Alison McCaf frey began discussing how the church could respond to such a horrific act. McCaffrey and Campbell looked at possibilities for getting involved in gun vio lence prevention efforts; for instance, a gun buy-back program. However, as it happened, another church, St. Peter's Episcopal, had al ready begun to work on sponsoring a gun violence prevention program. So the local churches teamed up. This summer, St. Peter’s parishioner and Boulder Knoll Community Farm coPresident Marjorie Chap man, along with Boulder Knoll’s Hap Jordan, went to New Haven for a public event designed to raise awareness about gun vio lence in Connecticut.

As recent events such as the war in Ukraine and energydriven inflation have made very clear, it is of the utmost importance that Cheshire do everything it can to reduce its energy use.

Remember when White House Press Secre tary Jen Psaki claimed it would be “unfair and absurd” for companies to raise costs in response to the Biden administration raising the corporate tax rate? That’s how they think.

Forbes noted that it was “important to re member that corporate taxes must be paid by people,” and, “Any corporate tax increase will be paid by either shareholders/owners, employees in the form of lower wages, or customers in the form of higher prices.”

I suppose everyone who would be consid ered middle class knew that, except Press Secretary Psaki. Higher prices are hitting every family and the cuts being made to the family budget are real. You’re feeling the loss of your purchas ing power because of infla tion, far more than those at the Whattop.can be done to provide real monetary relief to the middle class and those living on fixed incomes?

The Town of Mansfield is building three net-zero schools, and other Connecti cut towns are making fiscal ly-responsible decisions and considering life cycle costs when building, as well.

For one, I support stopping the money giveaways. This is a Democrat red herring, plain and simple, attempting to buy votes. This giveaway sweepstakes we’ve all been witness to is unsustainable. Unless, of course, you continue to print trillions upon trillions of dollars, out of thin air, increasing our super ballooned national debt. But that just feeds the inflation inferno even more, making the dollars you do have to spend buy less. Either way, you’re on the losing end.

The easiest and most costeffective time to do this is during the original design and construction phase of any new buildings. At this very moment, as Cheshire plans to modernize its schools, we have a golden opportunity to address their energy use. We on the energy commis sion believe Cheshire’s School Modernization pro cess will not reach the “modern” standard unless it strives for and achieves net-zero buildings. Net-zero buildings, through an array of energy efficiency tech niques such as ground source heat pumps, and on site renewable energy sources such as solar, pro duce more energy than they consume each year. Developments in building technologies have now made net-zero not just easily at tainable, but also affordable. It is the smart choice when looking at the life cycle cost of a building. Since Cheshire taxpayers are paying for, not only the initial construction cost, but also operational costs for the next 40 years, both need to be considered.

When is a divorced parent allowed to move with a child?

Relocation situations are emotionally charged, espe cially when both parents are committed, active, and share a close relationship with their child. While the law is clear, applying it to a partic ular family can be challeng ing.

Here is a recent example. The 2017 divorce judgment designated the then 4-year old child’s primary resi dence to be with Mom. Monday through Thursday each week, four weeks in the summer and half of all school holidays and vaca tions were with Mom, and the rest of the time, nearly half, was with Dad. Mom and Dad lived in adja cent towns. They co-parent ed well until 2020, when Mom relocated 40 miles away with the child and his teenage brother to be with her new husband. Mom filed a motion in court asking to change the arrangement so that the child would be with her every Sunday evening to Friday and alternating week

Daends.d’s defense was undisput ed and compelling. His job, family, newly-purchased home and girlfriend were in his local area as were most of the child’s school and health care contacts. He showed he had and could continue providing good care for his son and that his time would be greatly re duced by the move. He hadn’t done anything wrong, while Mom’s move was voluntary. The judge ac knowledged that both par ents were “caring, loving and devoted to the child.” Mom’s request was granted. She demonstrated to the judge’s satisfaction that the move was for a legitimate purpose, the first statutory factor, and that the pro posed location was reason able, the second, since her future husband was re quired to live in the town where he works. Monkeypox

In Connecticut, over a recent seven-day stretch, there were 3,300 confirmed COVID-19 cases, according to CT Data. In Wallingford, there had been 46, in Cheshire there had been 23, in Meriden 81 and in South ington, 39. Both New Haven and Hart ford Counties are in the medium risk category re garding COVID-19 exposure, according to the CDC. These categories are determined based on hospitalizations and case numbers.

The CDC also recommends that if a person has access to antigen tests, they should use one to be sure they can safely remove their mask.

“All the things that they nor mally would do are wonder ful to combat anything from cold and flu season down to any of the more rare things,” Lonczak said. “But typically the risk is very low because this really is going to fall un der a disease that is con tracted with really close skin-to-skin contact.”

According to the CDC, there are a total of 16,603 monkey pox cases in the United States, including 86 cases in Connecticut. “At this time, the risk of monkeypox infec tion in children and adoles cents remains low,” said Lea Crown, director of the Meri den Department of Health. “Monkeypox virus can infect anyone including chil dren if they have close, personal, often skin-to-skin contact with someone who has monkeypox. In this cur rent outbreak, most cases of monkeypox have been asso ciated with sexual contact.”

State’s housing needs not being addressed

Connecticut municipalities received $1.5 billion in fed eral funds via the American Rescue Plan Act. They have budgeted roughly 1% to sup port housing needs, says a recent report from the Con necticut Mirror. ARPA stimulus funds were meant to help communities with economic recovery af ter the pandemic. Towns have been taking a variety of approaches to how their share of the money will be used. Committees have been formed, guidelines have been crafted, priorities set. But there is little evidence that affordable housing is on the list, according to the Mirror report by journalists Andrew Brown and Ginny TheirMonk.coverage states that “data collected by the feder al government in April shows Connecticut’s 169 municipalities budgeted roughly $15 million around 1% of their share of the federal money for housing-related projects.” Whether this recent data analysis reveals a blind spot or willful blindness, it’s clear there’s lack vision when ad dressing this crucial need.

According to Brown and Monk, ARPA rules allow “local officials to spend the funds on rent and mortgage assistance, housing-related planning, energy efficiency upgrades for people’s homes, assistance for those experiencing homelessness, or the development and preservation of affordable “housing.”Housing advocates and some Connecticut lawmak ers view the lack of spending on local housing initiatives so far as a significant mis step,” says the Mirror report. “I would have expected the percentage of money put to ward affordable housing to be more, because that is a very critical priority,” said state Sen. Saud Anwar, who is on the legislature’s Hous ing Committee.
