CHS cross country teams finish strong at New Haven meet By Frank Logiudice Special to The Citizen
was 66th with a time of 24:26.
The Cheshire High School girls and boys cross country teams competed at the SCC championships, held Wednesday, Oct. 20, at East Shore Park in New Haven.
“Each girl helped us do so well. Alexa’s run speaks for itself. Meghan’s great race and strong leadership helped everyone. Mia came off a hip injury and ran one of the best times of the day. Eva’s time was the fastest time for a freshman. Katie Hall saved the day by running her fastest time of the season … Olivia Ferraro helped by showing great courage by trying to compete even though her injury has not healed,” Schaefer said.
Both teams brought strong finishes back to CHS and the town. The girls landed in second place with a score of 77, finishing behind only Guilford. CHS phenom Alexa Ciccone finished the course first with a time of 18:59 and received the SCC ¨2021 Runner of the Year Award¨ at the meet. Coach Robert Schaefer said, “Ciccone's time is the second fastest ever on this course. The record is Anna Steffens from Hand of Madison, 18:46 in 2020.” Other Cheshire athletes competing at the SCC meet were: Mia Vientos, who finished 10th with a time of, 20:55; Meghan Georgescu came in 12th with a time of 21:02; Eva Curran was 21st with a time of 21:48; Katie Hall finished 36th with a time of 22:53; Alex Palladino was 62nd with a time of 24:18; and Olivia Ferraro

ANGEL ARCE
KENNEDY PARKER
If there were any questions about Angel Arce’s game this season — namely, “Is there something wrong?” —they were dispelled Friday night when the senior quarterback threw for five touchdowns in Maloney’s 42-13 rout of Xavier. Arce completed 15 of 18 passes for 230 yards, with the five TD strikes going to four different receivers. Arce now has thrown for 718 yards and 11 TDs on the season.
The Wilcox Tech volleyball team simply caught fire through the middle of the season, winning eight straight before Goodwin Tech, with its own 15-game streak, ended the run Friday. Still, the Indians, at 11-6, are players in the CTC with the likes of Kennedy Parker. The senior notched 16 kills in matches last week vs. Norwich Tech, Windham Tech and Goodwin, and put down 11 aces en route to 35 service points.
VITO CHURCH
RILEE REUTENAUER
In his junior season of varsity football, Platt’s Vito Church is establishing himself as a sure-handed possession receiver. In Platt’s first five games, Church was targeted 21 times and made 19 catches. Then came Friday night in Weston. Church hauled in game-tying TD and conversion passes from QB Avery Robinson. The two connected once more on the two-point try in overtime that won the game, 22-21.
It’s easy to root for Rilee Reutenauer. Sheehan’s second-year starting goalie is having a solid sophomore season, with a 2.00 goalsagainst average forged against a slate that includes the top teams in the SCC. Reutenauer had 22 saves against reigning SCC champ Guilford and another 15 in a 1-0 loss to Hand. Last Thursday, Reutenauer shut out Lyman Hall for the second time this season in a 4-0 Sheehan victory.
JAVON THOMAS
SHAKIRA VILLANEUVA
Javon Thomas had a career night — so far — when he rolled up 185 yards and four touchdowns on 16 carries in Southington’s 42-6 win Friday over Manchester at Fontana Field. A pair of 1-yard TDs were the bookends of the victory. In between, the 6-foot, 200-pound senior broke free for a 60-yard score and powered another handoff home from 11 yards out. For the season, Thomas has 441 yards and 6 TDs.
With the postseason fast approaching, the Lyman Hall volleyball team is getting hot at the right time. Last week, the Trojans knocked off 14-3 North Haven and 13-4 Branford to improve to 10-9, and they were led by their setter, Shakira Villaneuva. The senior passed around 37 assists in Wednesday’s 3-2 win over North Haven and 28 in Friday’s 3-1 triumph over Branford. The 37 sets are Villaneuva’s season high.

The allure of parts unknown By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen
I daresay I was born with wanderlust. If you can’t quite bring the word to mind, it means to have a deep desire to wander, or travel. The definition at Merriam-Webster also produces the Robert Louis Stevenson poem, “Travels with a Donkey.” It goes like this: "I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel's sake. That’s me.

I imagine I got this predilection from my parents, who with their own case of wanderlust, left the Netherlands in their mid-20s to come here with nothing and knowing no one. They began in Michigan and somehow made their way to Delaware. Michigan does have Dutch expats, but something pushed them on, and they made their way to Delaware. My father said the surroundings seemed more like Holland. They never did stop traveling once they arrived here in the states. As I was growing up, our travels took us throughout the continental U.S. Sometimes it was a cross-country move. Sometimes it was vacation time, where the parents would load us kids into the VW camper and off we’d go with a general destination. Overall, I remember it as two weeks of sightseeing and meandering and a lot of camping and bean dinners cooked on a portable camp stove.
looked forward to each new place, whether it was Pennsylvania (living above a drugstore), Georgia (with cockroaches large enough to bend hinges on a door), Florida (don’t get caught in an electrical storm while on the beach, and if you do, make sure there’s a wooden boat you can hide under until the storm passes), followed by a long list of other states and cities. This recap of my adventures kind of sounds like I was a fugitive from the law, but my motivation was just the love of new places. Even after settling down with the hubby, my itch to travel took us to Europe on a mere whim — oh yes, there was that totally insane deal on airline tickets and a free rental car. On that trip, we had no real itinerary. We played it by ear. Sometimes we wound up in a German coffee bar playing the slot machine at 3 a.m. (and winning, to the dark disappointment of the older gentleman who must have been playing that machine for hours before giving it up to us). Other times we ended up sleeping in a parking lot for lack of a open inn. finished their daily walk on the trail. They walk about three miles each day (which is admirable, and please remind me to strive for that myself). Anyway, I asked if she had been to the flower gardens on the trail over at Railroad Avenue and Rt. 70 west. I was surprised when she said she had not and was not even sure where that was. She explained that the two of them only went on their very defined route, no farther. I couldn’t imagine that. And yet, another friend of mine, when pressed, said the same thing about not being aware of another area within Cheshire. Nope. That doesn’t work for me. My curiosity gets the better of me. So although I’m sure there are parts of town that I haven’t yet seen … I may go and have a look tomorrow.
