Town offers grace period for January tax bills By Devin Leith-Yessian Record-Journal staff

Taxpayers have some extra time to pay their January tax bills thanks to a deferment program that allows payments as late as April 1 without fees or interest. “The deferral is essentially just an extended grace period,” said Collector of Revenue William Donlin. Bills paid after April 1 will be subject to an interest rate of 1.5 percent per month, retroactive to Jan. 1. Cheshire High School senior Trinadey Santiago found herself at a crossroads in November 2019. Transferring from Danbury to

Cheshire as a junior, she had to leave behind her childhood home for the chance to realize her potential in the classroom and on the softball field. “At first, it was really hard because I

had grown up with so many people in Danbury,” Santiago said. “I’m not the best at moving into new friend groups, but I put myself out there and I’m glad that I did.”

No application is necessary for residents or businesses, with the exception of real estate owned through escrow bank accounts, and landlords, who must be eligible under state guidelines. “This deferral program is established to provide additional relief on interest and penalties for Cheshire taxpayers who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic,” a statement from the town read.
