It started with girls cross country on Oct. 19.
Field hockey, girls soccer and girls swimming followed in a swarm last Thursday, Oct. 27. Then, on Saturday, girls volleyball completed the deal.
For the first time in Southern Connecticut Conference his tory, one school has swept the fall girls championships.
And that school is Cheshire.
Coach Sue Bavone’s Lady Rams made it 5-for-5 by de feating Amity 3-2 in Satur day’s SCC volleyball tourna ment final at West Haven.
It was a vintage battle be tween the long-time rivals in West Haven.
Gunning for the upset, No. 2-seed Amity took the open ing set 25-13. No. 1 Cheshire responded with matching 25-20 decisions to take a 2-1 lead.
Amity stayed alive, 26-24, in a riveting fourth game. The fifth was just as close, with Cheshire prevailing 15-13. The Rams were led by senior
outside hitter Avery Mola, who was simply on fire with 29 kills.
Adding five digs, two aces and a block, Mola was named MVP of the tourna
Kathryn Ulicki added six kills apiece for Cheshire.
Sophia Surato (21assists) and Amelia Perlini (19) combined on the setting. They also combined on 15

Cheshire had individual winners in in Julia Barto, Natalia Gajecki, Julianna Tyler and Avery Potyrala and as a team, won all but two events on the night.

in girls soccer and field hockey. Both teams won 2-1 on late goals.
Gabby Tirado’s with 3:15 left earned the top-seeded soc cer team the victory over No. 2 Mercy at West Haven.
A couple hours later, Ava Matikowski’s connection with just 29 seconds to go carried the second-seeded field hockey team past No. 4 Branford in Woodbridge.
The SCC title was Cheshire’s eighth in field hockey, but first since 2013. Cheshire girls soccer last rose to the top of the SCC in 2016.
Both game-winning goals were delivered right in front of the net. Matikowski’s came after the Rams worked the ball in from the left side of the circle. She was assist ed by Taya Buntin.

It was Sink’s second assist of the game. Earlier in the sec ond half, she slid a corner kick to Anna Hurlbut, who ran on to the ball and lasered a BB to the far post from the left side.
Hurlbut’s goal tied the game at 1-all. Mercy had taken a 1-0 lead early in the first half.
At halftime, Tirado was named the SCC Girls Soccer Player of the Year. She was also named Most Outstand ing Player of the Tourna ment. (Cheshire’s Samir Dishnica was the SCC Boys Player of the Year.)

EDITORIAL: Honoring veterans on Nov. 11
The following was published in the Record-Journal on Nov. 11, 2013:
At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, an armistice went into effect, ending The Great War between the Allied Powers (predominantly Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy and the United States) and the Central Powers (Ger
many, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria). In 1926, the United States Congress called upon the nation to mark, each Nov. 11, "the cessation of the most destructive, san guinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the re sumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations,
which we hope may never again be severed ..." In other words, Armistice Day was created mainly as a day to celebrate the peace and hope that it would last.
It didn't. "The war to end all wars" would turn out to be just a prelude to World War II the biggest, most destruc tive war in human history and to the many regional wars that have followed it. In 1954, in the wake of World War II and Korea, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, in honor of American veterans of all wars. In 1968, the ob servance was moved to a Monday, but a few states re fused to follow suit, causing confusion. In 1978, it was moved back to Nov. 11, where it remains to this day. Back in 1918, President Woodrow Wilson had proposed his ide alistic Fourteen Points, in cluding the creation of a League of Nations to oversee the resolution of the disputes that had led to the war, and to build a lasting peace. Sad ly, Wilson's allies instead de manded draconian punish ments and war reparations from Germany conditions that would contribute greatly to the rise of the Nazis and his own country rejected the League.
The Department of Veterans Affairs notes that there is sometimes confusion be tween Veterans Day and Memorial Day.
Veterans Day honors veterans of all wars in which the U.S. has fought. Memorial Day, which originally honored those killed in the Civil War, is now a day when the Ameri can dead of all wars are re membered. The American Legion reminds us that Veter ans Day is a time to honor all of the men and women who have served in our armed forces: "Not all veterans have seen war, but a common bond that they share is an oath in which they expressed their willingness to die de fending this nation."
The VFW points out that we now lose more veterans to suicide at home than we lose on the battlefield in Afghanistan, and calls on the nation not just Congress and the VA, but individual Americans as well to do more to help veterans over come their injuries, both physical and mental, when they come home.
Parades and speeches are fine, but that would be a way of truly honoring the vets.

Rally against solitary confinement at correctional center
Record-Journal staff
Advocates opposed to the use of solitary confinement rallied in front of Cheshire Correctional Institution on Highland Avenue, Oct. 26 They say the state is not do ing enough to comply with Public Act 22-18, known as the Protect Act, which Gov. Ned Lamont signed in May.
The Protect Act “enacts limi tations on the amount of time and circumstances un der which an incarcerated
person may be held in iso lated confinement in state prisons and jails, and places new requirements on its use, ” according to a state ment from Lamont’s office.
Although the governor’s passage of the Act after an initial veto was welcome progress for reformers, more work needs to be done for justice, according to Barbara Fair, founder of Stop Solitary Connecticut, who organized the rally.
Fair spoke at the event re garding what she character ized as continuing state vio lations of the new law’s let ter and intent. She said she receives letters reporting conditions such as 22-23 hours a day of confinement, non-emergency lockdowns, lack of access to education, and arbitrary discipline for minor violations.
Several of those in atten dance at the rally spoke from experience about the
emotional and physical hardships of solitary con finement. Fair also discussed that some are sent to prison with untreated mental ill ness and that mental health can suffer in prison.
Fair said 40 percent of those in Cheshire Correctional In
stitute are pre-trial deten tions, meaning they have not been convicted or sen tenced. These detainees may not be able to afford bail, she said.

The first holiday season after divorce
For divorcing or divorced people and for those sepa rated from their spouse or partner, dealing with holi days can be stressful and lonely. So in this month’s column I am taking a break from legal issues. Instead, I have asked several wellknown psychologists and counselors, whose work with divorcing families I know and respect, what suggestion they would make to help deal with the emotional dif ficulties of the holidays.

‘Lost Girl’ to hit the stage
Cheshire High School Drama Club is getting ready to bring its fall production to the stage, starting Thursday, Nov. 17. This year’s offering is Kimberly Belflower’s “Lost Girl.” The play unfolds years after Wendy the character from “Peter Pan”– has returned from Neverland, and explores her journey to move on from her youth and reclaim her life.
Concord Theatricals, the licensing agent, calls “Lost Girl “a coming-of-age exploration of first love and lasting loss”; Wendy, the featured character, continues the story of J.M. Barrie’s beloved character. She’s a girl who must grow up. But first she must find Peter Pan and reclaim a kiss they shared. Along the way, she meets other girls who went to Neverland and learns she is not alone in her quest.
The public is invited to attend what the CHS Drama Club describes as a “wonderfully thought-provoking piece.” “Lost Girl” will be performed at the Thorp Auditorium Nov. 17, 18 and 19. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets available at the door: $8 for students and senior citizens, $10 for adults.

Cheshire’s Alexa Ciccone continued her torrid junior season of cross country with a sixth-place finish at Fri day’s State Open at Wick ham Park.
Ciccone was in the lead pack all race and crossed the fin ish line in 19:20 on an un seasonably warm early November afternoon that was felt by the runners.
“Today, I was on the ground after the race,” said Ciccone. “It was hot and I felt very de hydrated and felt pain in my legs. Last week, it was so cold and it was so hot to day. But it still was a good race. It was very exciting to finish in the Top 6 and make New England’s.”
The girls race was won by Glastonbury’s Brooke Strauss. The sophomore led the field with a 19:05 and guided Glastonbury to the
team championship with 65 points.
Cheshire finished eighth as a team with 239 points. Be hind Ciccone for the Rams were Emily D'Souza (35th, 20:46), Mia Vientos (71st, 21:39), Ava Ciccone (108th, 22:09) and Eva Curran (118th, 22:37).
“We were here running in the state championship against the best teams,” Cheshire coach Rob Schaefer said. “I am so proud of these girls. They’ve had some good days and some OK today, but they never had a bad day The girls were pumped up and were ready today.”
Like Cheshire, the Southing ton girls qualified as a team for the State Open and placed 12th with 258 points. They were led by junior Jes sica Lombardo, who was 24th overall with a time of 20:18.

Southington coach Nick Mi gani said Lombardo is be coming professional in her approach to running.
“She goes in with goal of taking 10 seconds off of her PR each race,” Migani said. “She’s done that day in and day out. Even when she’s not feeling her best, she goes out and give her best. It’s been really impressive what she’s accomplished this year.”
Also scoring for Southington were Julia Donorfio (68th, 21:35), Katherine Cavanaugh (79th, 29:51), Emma Talon (95th, 21:57) and Ava Egan (111th, 22:32). “The girls were a little disappointed in their times after making huge jumps from CCC’s to LL’s,” Migani said. “Today we knew we weren’t as compet itive to go to New England’s as a team. Looking at the course and seeing some of the top girls in the state struggling (with the heat) put it all into perspective.”
Ciccone qualified for the New England Championships by finishing sixth overall with a time of 19:20.
