Republicans sweep at-large council seats By Michael Gagne Record-Journal staff

Cheers filled Viron Rondo Osteria Tuesday night, Nov. 5, as Republicans appeared to pull away with a sweep of at-large Town Council seats, and looked poised to take three out of the four Board of Education seats up for election.

“It looks to me like the Republican Party won in a landslide,” said Town Council incumbent Rob Oris Jr., the current chairman, who also appeared to be the front-runner in the race for at-large council seats. In the Council’s Third District race, Republican Party candidate Don Walsh appeared to have ousted

Democratic Party incumbent Jeffrey Falk from the seat. Meanwhile, Democratic Party candidate Jim Jinks appeared poised to take the District Two seat, previously Republican held, in a tight race against his Republican opponent Guy Darter. Final election numbers were not available Tuesday night. Election of-

Thanksgiving — it’s a “love it or nota-fan” holiday. For some it can be a nightmare. The cousins don’t get along, the potatoes are lumpy or you hate turkey, or Uncle Joe starts talking politics — even though Aunt Ginny told him not to. Then again, it also can be a harmonious time where relatives renew their acquaintance, your new stuffing recipe is well-received, or a new baby in the family is introduced.

Thousands of luminaries lit up the town on Saturday, turning Lights of Hope into a glowing vista of goodwill. Now in its 15th year, Lights of Hope has raised nearly $1 million to date.

They wanted new faces and new ideas,” Darter said. Taking seven seats on the Town Council, he said, “was a very nice surprise.” Democratic Town Council candidate Jeffrey Falk, who was defeated in his bid for reelection to the council's

Third District seat, seemed to agree with Darter, saying, “In town, yes, the unaffiliated voters are the ones who essentially determine a lot of stuff.” Falk suggested the Democratic Town Committee will need to go over the input it has received from voters throughout this past campaign “so we can better prepare for the next election.” Depite the past election's outcome, Falk said he was pleased by the turnout. “I'm very happy people came out to vote,” Falk said. mgagne@record-journal.com 203-317-2231 Twitter:@MikeGagneRJ

CHESHIRE — Police have identified a 58year-old local man who died after a twovehicle crash last week on Waterbury Road. Thomas Goerg, 58, of Cheshire, died as a result of injuries suffered in the crash, Lt. Michael Durkee said Tuesday morning. The accident happened just after noon on Friday, Nov. 8. Lights of Hope From A1

around the community.

get so into it,” said Jenifer Walsh, co-founder of the event. “We had a 15% increase in our sponsorships this year. We usually have 30 or 40 businesses that sponsor the event along Route 10 … and we’re up 15%.”

Town resident Gary Richards also unveiled a piece of art he created alongside resident Jeff Petit that was dubbed the “Heart of Hope.” The heart will be passed around to different businesses and organizations around town, starting with the First Congregational Church.

Her husband and cofounder Don Walsh added that the organization was “even to a little ahead” of last year’s $75,000 grand total. The event started at 2 p.m. on the First Congregational Church Green where Walsh and his wife presented thousands of dollars to local charities and organizations. Cheshire Youth and Social Services and the Cheshire Food Pantry both received checks for $13,500 and the Petit Family Foundation received $8,000. Luminaries lit up the stretch of Route 10 through town as well as at many other sites

“When Don had approached me about possibly incorporating the arts into the Cheshire Lights of Hope last year I said Absolutely. 100%. Whatever you need,” said Richards. “We came up with the idea of a photo contest.” Richards said they collected photos people had submitted of their luminaries and decided to “create something really special.” The photo collage was then attached to the “Heart of Hope” to memorialize the spirit of the event. In one last surprise, Don

Walsh announced that Saturday was not only the 15th anniversary of Lights of Hope but also he and Jenifer Walsh’s 23rd wedding anniversary. “We decided to spend it with a bunch of our friends here,” said Don Walsh. “We make a good team. We work well together, we have a lot of the same thoughts ... I depend on her for a lot of things.” But Saturday wasn’t just a day of celebration for the Walsh family and the local organization. It was also a treat for the volunteers who have spent time on efforts to better their community. “I think it’s pretty cool because it’s really pretty at night and it’s all for a good cause,” said volunteer Ella Davis. Thanksgiving From A1

In Cheshire, the Bowman family is both large in number and well-known. Jamie Bowman shared one Bowman tradition that may not be so well-known. Two days before Thanksgiving, Jamie explains, his Aunt Sally hosts pie baking events at her home. First she invites all her grand nieces and nephews over to make personal sized pies for themselves the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. She teaches them how to make homemade pie crust, has different pie fillings to choose from and the kids also decorate the pies. “The children love this day,” said Jamie. “They look forward to it every year and walk away with their own little pie to show off on Thursday.” Sally then does it again with nieces, nephews and sistersin-law the following day. “We all come together to

bicza said.

bake pies using my grandmother's recipes, which come from a family cookbook, said Jamie. “The pie baking with Aunt Sally is one of my favorite family traditions and even at age 29, I look forward to the event every year,” he said. Leslie Marinaro is another Cheshire resident with a fond Turkey Day memory. “Every year we went to my Aunt Nora’s for Thanksgiving and she always served her sister Mary’s delicious meat stuffing. One year I asked to come over the night before to learn how to make it, so the recipe stayed in the family. When I got there they had all the ingredients out and started preparing it. At one point they hovered around the pan and I couldn’t see what they were doing. Something is suspicious here! When I called them out on it, they came clean. My Dad hated onions and wouldn’t eat anything with them in his food (and

they spoiled him). But the meat stuffing couldn’t be made without it so they diced it up so small and added it to stuffing and he was never the wiser. Every year when I make this delicious stuffing, I think of them and smile, and I am thankful they were such a blessing in our lives,” said Marinaro. “Stuffin’ Muffins!” is Jenn

Kubicza’s family’s Thanksgiving tradition. “My aunt had this recipe from the back of a bag of stuffing many years ago. She had made them for Thanksgiving for as long as I can remember. My aunt passed away of early onset Alzheimer’s three years ago in her early 60s. My cousin (her daughter) carries on the tradition every year. It’s not Thanksgiving without them,” Ku-

Joan Massimino Gibbons stands by her casserole. It’s a broccoli dish she’s made for years. Her recipe is as follows: cook broccoli, drain, melt 1 stick butter, add to 1 sleeve crushed Ritz crackers, add approximately 1 or 1-1/ 2 cups shredded white cheese, mix 1/2 of butter crackers mixture with broccoli and cheese, pour the rest of cracker mixture on top, bake at 375 degrees approximately 30 to 40 minutes. Gibbons said it serves about eight people and she makes it a couple days in advance. Good food and fond family memories are also on the table with Christine Anotellis Norton’s Thanksgiving tradition. “We all write an anonymous note on a small piece of paper about what we are thankful for, fold it up and put it in a hat,” said Anotellis Norton. “One by one, we each pick a note from the hat and read it aloud. Some are funny, some are sweet,” she said.

New Tops Market starting to take shape Crews from Pelletier Construction Management continue work on the Tops Market building at 887 Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike. Dave Zajac,

By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

SOUTHINGTON – The shell of the Tops Market building is nearing completion and the owners are planning to reopen in March while they continue the store’s catering business. A fire destroyed the independent grocery store earlier this year. Owners John Salerno and Betsy Tooker decided to rebuild, taking the opportunity to make improvements to the building while not significantly altering its footprint. Salerno said he’s glad to see a building taking shape but still has all the interior work ahead on his mind. Bozzuto’s Inc., a food distributor

Record-Journal

based in Cheshire, helped design the interior. “They support the stores in every way they can,” Salerno said of IGA grocery stores like his own. He’s already chosen new display cases, refrigerators and other equipment. Prepared foods, both hot and ready-to-heat, will be given a more prominent location in the new store. There will

also be online ordering for food and groceries. Customers will be able to use a drive-up window at the store, Salerno said, or get their order delivered.

of Pelletier Construction Management. “We’re trying to get weather tight within the next 30 days.” Pelletier said he also wants to get the asphalt paving done before asphalt plants close for the season in midDecember. This week, crews will be finishing the roof. They’ll then work on a large glass atrium in the front of the store, Pelletier said. The atrium is a major feature of the new building and sets it apart from the former store.

Construction crews expect to be ready to do inside work “It’s all glass and it’ll have during the winter. the sign in the middle of the curtain wall,” Pelletier said. “We’re working pretty fast on getting the shell erected and Crews are also close to startget the interior roughed out,” ing the stucco that’ll cover said Mat Pelletier, principal most of the grocery store’s

exterior walls. Grocery sales ended with the fire, but Salerno has been continuing the store’s catering service, Carmela Marie Catering. They’ve just ended wedding season and are booking holiday parties in addition to serving food at Southington Catholic School and St. Bridget School in Cheshire. “We’re really busy, we’re busy every day,” Salerno said. He appreciated the support from area businesses and residents. “We’re not advertising and the business people find out we’re doing it. They just call,” Salerno said. “I’d like to feel we’ve treated them well.”
