Over 400 people came out for the 14th annual Hot COCO 5K on Saturday to support Abilities Without Boundaries.
The event at Norton School featured runners from throughout the re gion, as well as a fun run for kids and a one-mile walk.
Proceeds from this year’s event go toward adaptive speech technology and speech therapy for clients in the Cheshire area.
The 5K run took athletes in a circular route along North and South Brooksvale roads. Chil

The top runners received awards based on their age group, and all the children in the fun run received a ribbon for making it back over the finish line.
As their largest fundraiser of the year, organizers were aiming to raise $30,000 and were pleased with the success of the

The margin does not qualify for an automat ic recount under state law.
The 83rd House District includes parts of Meriden, Berlin and Cheshire and has been held by retiring Democratic state Rep. Catherine Abercrombie since 2005, when she won in a special election. According to unofficial results, Fazzino won Meriden

U.S. Rep. Hayes fends off Logan in the 5th
By Lisa Hagen and Ginny Monk The Connecticut Mirror
U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes won reelection in Connecticut’s 5th District, defeating Re publican challenger George Logan by fewer than 2,000 votes following a con tentious race that grabbed the national spotlight and saw a record amount of national spending.
With the race too close to call on Election Day, Tues day, Nov. 8, the campaigns had been closely watching the race throughout the day on Nov. 9. Hayes was hold ing an ultra-thin lead over Logan with the results from the town of Salisbury still unknown. Once the results came in from Salisbury, both the office of the Secre tary of the State and the As sociated Press called the race for Hayes.
“This was a hard fought race that was unfortunately fu eled by millions of dollars in outside spending. But ulti mately, the people of this district are the ones to de cide who their representa tive will be not national Super PACs,” Hayes said in a statement before holding a press conference in Water bury. “The Fifth District is my home, and I’m humbled to have the opportunity to continue serving you in the House of Representatives.”
More than 250,000 votes were cast in the contest. The 0.5% threshold would have been a margin of about 1,250 votes.
It was Hayes’ closest reelec tion race since she first ran in 2018 and had won her two previous elections with double-digits margins. Her victory in the 5th District means Connecticut’s con gressional delegation will remain all-blue.
Republicans have not won a House seat in the state since 2006 and many saw Logan, a former state senator, as their best shot in years.
The 5th District is typically the most competitive race in the state, but this year, the campaign reached new heights with upwards of $12 million in outside spending from both parties that blan keted the region with ads. The issues that animated competitive races across the U.S. came heavily into play in the 5th District, especially debate over the economy, what has contributed to in flation, and access to abor tion both at the state and federal levels.

2,486 to Arata’s 2,216, while Arata won Cheshire 981 to Fazzino’s 975 and Berlin 1,675 to Fazzino’s 1,525. An automatic re count is triggered when the margin is less than 0.5 per cent of the vote total. In this case, the 114-vote mar gin is 1.156 percent of total votes cast.
Both candidates were re luctant to claim victory on Election Day. But after confirming results with town clerks’ offices and counting absentee ballots and election day registra
tions, Fazzino and other Democrats knew late in the evening he had won. “We had a great feeling of where we were,” Fazzino said. “It was beyond words. We put so much collective effort into the campaign, to have the realization to rep resent the district I come from is a privilege beyond anything I can compare.”
Fazzino, a Berlin town councilor, praised Arata for running a campaign fo cused on the issues. “I have nothing but respect for him,” Fazzino said. “We ran a civil, issues-cam paign. We showed it doesn’t have to be so con tentious.”
Fazzino credits his win to listening to voters who are concerned about safety and the economy.
“We need to make an af fordable Connecticut for everyone, ” Fazzino said. “This comes down to meeting people where they’re at and meeting the difficulties and challenges people are facing. People want someone who is go ing to fight for them up in Hartford.”
This election was Arata’s third try at the seat where the margins were less than 300 votes.

built on the same North Brooksvale Road location where Norton currently stands.
Also, as part of the proposal, Darcey and Chapman schools will be closed and ownership will revert to the town.
The project is expected to receive state reimbursement, low ering the overall cost to approximately $94 million. The plan was devised over a period of years, first by a special School Modernization Committee made up of local residents and members of the Town Council and Board of Education, who began investigating options for modernizing local schools in 2019 and provided recommendations in 2021.
In addition to the question on school modernization, Cheshire voters approved two other referendum items. Question No. 1 was in regards to early voting and this passed 8,034 to 5,384 locally and received strong support statewide.
Question No. 2 was in regards to a Road Improvement Pro gram and authorized the issue of $2.4 million in bonds and notes to finance the appropriation. This measure passed 9,759 to 3,643.

event. Though the down pour the night before caused some to cancel ahead of Sat urday, the weather was clear when the race began at 10 a.m. Initially, they’d expect ed upwards of 600 partici pating runners.
“We probably would have 200 more people here today if it wasn't for the forecast,” AWB spokesman Chris Loynd said. “But everybody had a great time. We raised some significant money to help us get adaptive speech technologies for our individ uals. So all in all, it's a very good day.”
The nonprofit Abilities With out Boundaries has been helping those with disabili ties in the Cheshire area since 1978, offering pro gramming and employment opportunities to residents with specialized needs currently offering services to 80 people through its pro
grams. The COCO run was staffed by several of those individuals, and the AWB Music Program put on a per formance prior to the start of the fun run.
All the proceeds from the run go into broadening AWB’s capabilities to be able to provide care for the adults with verbal difficulties. As a nonprofit, the group uses the run to seek alternative means of funding for ser vices, versus funding provid ed through the state.
“Half of the adults in our care have communications challenges,” said Amanda Barnes, executive director of AWB. “These range from nonverbal individuals to those who have cognitive or pronunciation difficulties. New technologies can help us unlock their voices. We can help our individuals better express their thoughts. However, the ex pense of the devices, and a speech therapist to imple ment them, are not covered by our usual state funding.”

Their goal, said Barnes, is to help people with specialized needs become better accli mated in the community and feel satisfied in the work they’re able to do.
“So our top priority is for them to feel comfortable in the community, be able to work with the community, and also giving them a voice so that when they are in the community that they are ac cepted,” she said.
The event was organized in collaboration with JB Sports, an event management com pany that hosts running events across the New Eng land area. Many other Cheshire businesses lent their support to the run through donations and sponsorships, including lo cal law firm Bartlett & Grippe, which donated $5,000.
COCO runs in previous years have helped AWB pur chase other resources to fa cilitate care, having allowed the agency to start its music program and purchase a wheelchair accessible van.
“It impacts the greater com munity,” Loynd said. “There are people like this in every community that have these needs. And it's especially tough on caregivers and par ents. We're hoping that the speech technology will be another success story.”

SELFLESS CITIZENS: Serafinos to be honored
By Christian Metzger Record-Journal staff
SOUTHINGTON Long time family owners of a downtown pharmacy Ron and Nancy Serafino will be honored for their communi ty involvement during the YMCA’s 20th annual Forever in Blue Jeans fundraiser at the Aqua Turf Club on Fri day.
The Nov. 18 event raises funds to support Camp Slop er and other YMCA pro gramming in the coming year.
Ron and Nancy Serafino re ceived the YMCA’s Compass Award earlier this year and will be recognized during a special presentation at the event. The award honors Southington residents who have dedicated themselves to giving back to the com munity.
“I was very shocked,” Ron Serafino said of receiving the award. “We are just very ap preciative that the town has been so good to us and sup ported us. We’ve always tried to keep a good reputa tion in town, and we've had so many great relationships with people.”
Outside of the presentation to the Serafinos, there will also be a silent auction, dancing, and dinner for all guests in attendance. The event runs from 6 to 11:30 p.m. The dress will be blue jeans and the colors of Camp Sloper orange and blue in keeping with this year’s theme Forever in Blue Jeans: Sloper Style.
Organizers are expecting around 700 people to attend, and are looking to raise $75,000 to put toward schol arships, programming and facilities at the camp. The money will be placed into the Camp Sloper Capital Campaign, which outside of programming will also go to ward the YMCA’s planned project to dredge Sloper Pond, as well as build and renovate new camp facilities to accommodate guests in the coming years.
This follows a year of record attendance for the camp, with 4,000 children attend ing last summer. That’s the largest number in the camp’s 73-year history, since it opened in 1949. YMCA of ficials are looking to improve the camp for what they hope will be even greater numbers in the coming years.
“We’re anticipating a large return of kids. I think they had a great time last year, and we’ve got some exciting improvements that are high lighting our capital cam paign that we believe will in crease the participation and enhance the activities that we have at Camp Sloper,” said Mark Pooler, president of Southington-Cheshire Community YMCAs.
The Serafinos have a long standing relationship with the local YMCA, having pro vided both time and dona
tions to the organization over the years. Both have been longtime residents of the Southington community.
“We’ve always had really close ties with the Y. I can’t think of the fundraiser where we haven’t helped them out,” Serafino said. “It’s not for publicity, it’s just be cause we’ve always had a good relationship with their people.”
Ron Serafino has been a res ident for 69 years, having moved to the town when he
was 2 years old, and ran the Serafino Pharmacy on North Main Street downtown since 1974 until its closure last year. He was also a founding director of the Bank of Southington, and member of the Friends of Southington Animal Control.
His wife, Nancy, also worked at the pharmacy and started the Silent Network, which provided those in need with clothing and household items. She has supported child care programs at the YMCA for years, and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce Board of Direc tors.
Given their lifelong commit ment to the community, the Serafinos were a deserving choice for the Compass Award, Pooler said.
“It was a very, very easy choice. Both Ron and Nancy have been staples in the Southington community for 30-40 plus years. They ran a business downtown that was right in the heart of the com munity, and they ran that business with their hearts,” Pooler said. “They’re just such wonderful people.

district while Robertson got more than 13,000.
The 16th Senate District in cludes Cheshire, Prospect, Southington, Waterbury and Wolcott. Sampson, a Wolcott resident, has held the seat since 2018.
His campaign focused on af fordability, public safety and parents’ rights, a message
that he said resonated with voters. “I think Republicans deserve a chance to run the state,” Sampson said. With Republican gains in 2018, there was a “flash of parity” with Democrats who have controlled Hartford for decades and Sampson hoped he’d get more help in the General Assembly after Nov. 8.
“What I need more than anything else is help,” he said.
Robertson said he was pleased with how hard he and his team worked. “Peo ple are scared with inflation, with the rise in food costs, gas, oil,” Robertson said on election night. “People are nervous of the future.”

“People I run into, even to day, they’re all saying the same thing to me that there’s just a big void in the
