Cheshire swimmers state their case Rams follow Class LL championship by capturing State Open Record-Journal staff
NEW HAVEN — First Class LL, now the State Open. Less than a week after ending Greenwich’s nine-year dynasty in Class LL (see story on page 4) the Cheshire girls swimming team snapped the Cardinals’ fouryear run as State Open champ, edging the Cardinals 428-420 on Sunday at Yale’s Kiputh Pool Just as they were in the class meet, the Rams were led at the Open by Sophie Murphy and Julia Stevens. Each won two individual events — the same two they captured in Class LL.
Murphy, a junior, successfully defended her State Open titles in the freestyle sprints. Murphy won the 50-yard free in 23.68 seconds and the 100 in 51.08. Stevens, a senior, swept the distance freestyles. Her winning times were 1:51.97 in the 200 and 4:59.55 in the 500. Murphy and Stevens also teamed with junior Nora Bergstrom and freshman Avery Potyrala to place second in the meet-ending 400 freestyle in 3:32.51. While Greenwich won that race, Cheshire secured the team title with the second-place points.

Women in business navigate changing times By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen
Businesses realize the world is ever-changing. Business owners and business leaders also know the world won’t wait for them to catch up should they fall behind. To that end, the topic of November’s Cheshire Chamber of Commerce Business Women’s Alliance Luncheon was “Navigating Change: The Future in Business.”
The monthly educational speaker series, chaired by Brette Stern, has been held for the past eight years, said Chamber President Yetta Augur. “It’s an amazing group of women supporting each other in growing our businesses,” she said. The presentation, held at Vespucci’s restaurant, gave the audience of business women insight into generational marketing by women who repre-
sent and lead in areas of banking and investment, accounting, housing, employment and workplace professionals. Linda Blackburn, a small business owner who has also taught business workshops and financial literacy in high schools, helped to facilitate the meeting.
