Towns fight knotweeds

Connecticut is being invaded. Everywhere you look — abandoned backlots, street corners, or alongside a highway or side street — you will see non-native invasive plant life. If you know what to look for. The Connecticut Invasive Plant Working Group defines invasive plants as “non-na-
tive plants that are disruptive in a way that causes environmental or economic harm, or harm to human health.”
Suzanne Simone, environmental planner for the town of Cheshire said one thing she wanted to impress on people is “to try to prevent further invasions by being aware of what invasives look like, and to See Knotweeds, A15
Plastic problem detailed in library talk By Joy VanderLek The Cheshire Citizen
When you walk on the beach, notice the tidemark – that’s where you’ll usually find a line of seaweed
pushed up by the tide. These days, that tidemark will usually include discarded fishing line, plastic bottles and food wrappers. That marine debris, most of
it plastic, is a big problem, said Lisa Piastuch, education and outreach manager for North American Marine Environment Protection See Plastic, A17
Jalowiec, a Cheshire resident, is the judge for Probate Court District 18 CheshireSouthington. A member of the WWII Airborne Demonstration Team located in Frederick, Oklahoma, Jalowiec, along with approximately 100 of his fellow team members travelled to join the international celebration of what is generally referred to a D-Day, June 6, 1944, when Allied Forces invaded the French peninsula of Normandy in what was then known as Operation Overlord. Throughout the week of this recreation, tens of thousands of participants rallied in the French region with original war planes, vehicles and equipment, and airborne drops occurred all week in various locations. Jalowiec participated in a drop with his team in conjunction with

Exploring Country Club Road (The History Hound continues his intrepid search to uncover the lesser known landmarks of Cheshire, working alongside his companion Mitzi Romano, on behalf of The Cheshire Historical Society.)
The substation provided power for a portion of the Cheshire Street Railway trol-
ley line. From 1905 until 1936, the CSR trolley ran from Waterbury to Cheshire, on a line that paralleled the railroad. It's been said that trolleys used to drive into the building for maintenance through the back door (now facing the Campion Ambulance building); however, Cheshire Masonic Historian Dave Stewart assures us that this is simply another urban legend, as trolley never could have fit into the building.
In 1959, a cornerstone laying ceremony was done. The cornerstone can be seen on the front, left-hand corner of the building. There were well over 300 people from town who attended the memorable event, including local notables. The ceremo-

What is that solid-looking brick building at the bend of Country Club Road, just off Route 10? That’s the Masonic Temple Lodge 16. Its location is technically listed as 9 Country Club Road, Originally though, it was an electric substation. Are you surprised? It was built in 1900 by the Connecticut Power and Trolley Company (the company later went on to become the more wellknown Connecticut Light & Power, CL&P).
How did the Masons come to own it? The Cheshire Masons met in the old Grange Building on Wallingford Road for decades — that was before the Grange burned down in the early ‘50s. The Masons then moved nextdoor to “the old green building,” the Oddfellows Building, until they had the chance to buy their own property. The Masons bought 9 Country Club Road from the power company in August 1958. It took a few years of renovations before they got to use the building and the rest is history, said Stewart.

Jalowiec From A1
Jalowiec said, “Everything we do today in France, in these planes and in these skies is to remember and honor our grandparents and parents and all for which they fought and died for. We must never forget the enormity of the sacrifices they made to ensure our freedom today. Bearing that mantle on this 75th Anniversary is an easy task as I went out that door. Compared to 75 years ago no one was shooting at me, there were no Wehrmacht on the ground, and I came to rest in a peaceful farm field with a flock of sheep. When I stood up, I was in Normandy and it was at peace. With the average age of the last living veteran attendees being 96, it is unlikely we will have such an opportunity to say thank you in person ever again. It was a humbling experience and one I will never forget.”
You’ve never been treated better.
Jalowiec used original equipment and uniform and exited a “D-Day Doll” which was originally built at the Douglas factory in Santa Monica, California and was delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force on July 7, 1943. “To look out the window of the warplane and see upon its olive drab green fuselage the contrasting black and white invasion stripes, and to know you are flying above hallowed ground was a moving experience.” Jalowiec said. “While 75 years has passed since our veterans were there during the original invasion, it is important to remember that so many of them never left.” — Press release

On the CIPWG’s website (cipwg.uconn.ed) help is given to identify invasive plants with plentiful information in the way of photos and factsheets that list plant description, habitat, region, look-alikes, ecological threat and more. As the town’s environmental planner, Simone knows that one important strategy is to educate residents about non-native invasive plants and to encourage people to address invasive issues on their properties. The town is a resource to provide assistance with plant identification and management options. A few years ago, Simone compiled an invasive plant management handout to give homeowners an understanding of the plants. It includes a seasonal chart and disposal plans from the CT Invasive Plant Working Group. “The town addresses invasive plants on town-owned open space in areas that make the most sense to address. It is no longer practical to believe that we can remove invasives from the landscape entirely, but we can manage them in the most sensitive areas or work to prevent their establishment,” she said

Plastic
Awareness and education are positive steps towards addressing the issue, Piastuch said. “We are in a throwaway economy,” she said, offering tips that can help. Reduce, recycle and reuse whenever possible. Go to consignment and vintage shops to reuse goods. Join groups who volunteer in ocean and inland cleanups. Start a compost pile for food waste. Instead of buying the newest and the latest thing, ask yourself if you really need it. Piastuch counseled to buy wisely and with as little packaging as possible.

Association. NAMEPA is a marine industry-led organization, based in Weston, that advocates for cleaner oceans through best-practices, stewardship and education. She presented an eye-opening educational program about plastic pollution at the Cheshire Public Library on June 17. Plastic was the miracle product when first introduced to consumers. After decades of widespread use, its contribution as a major man-made pollutant cannot be overstated, Piastuch said. Marine debris, and notably plastic, can be found everywhere: beaches, marinas, coves and inlets, streams, deltas and rivers. If you’ve heard of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (there’s actually five patches), then you understand plastic winds up at these gyres as well. Plastic has even been found in the ocean’s deepest places, including The Mariana Trench, said Piastuch. Approximately 90 percent of goods travel by way of ships. However, 80 percent of marine debris is land-based, according to Piastuch. Debris finds its way to the ocean by way of run-off, winds, littering and dumping. Microfibers from clothing and plastic bags are also a concern, said Piastuch. Almost 1 trillion single-use plastic bags are manufactured each year. Piastuch wanted to know what towns have ordinances in place regarding plastic bags. Wilton, Weston and Hamden were among the answers.
From the audience, Susan Buckley commented on companies she recently heard about that are testing a new sales model, where you buy toothpaste or shampoo and bring back the botLisa Piastuch, a marine debris expert, spoke about plastic pollution in the ocean, at the tle. “You only own the content, not the container,” she Cheshire Public Library on June 17. said. time, that 46,000 pieces of winds, waves and sunlight humans.
