Katherine Zukis named Teacher of the Year

During this year’s Convocation ceremony at Cheshire High School in late August, Katherine Zukis, first grade teacher at Norton School, was named the Cheshire Public Schools’ 2023-2024 Teacher of the Year.

“It takes a tremendous amount of effort to establish a rapport with 19 students,” said Zukis. “You’re putting time and energy into building trusting relationships with each of them.”

Zukis did her undergraduate work at Keene State College, and received a Master’s degree in education from Central Connecticut State University. She worked at DiLoreto Elementary School in her hometown of New Britain before getting her first job in Cheshire.

Following a maternity leave, Zukis was asked to come back to Norton as a firstgrade teacher. Although nervous to move to a lower grade-level, Kelly Grillo, the former Norton principal who this year moved to a new role as principal at Dodd Middle School, says it was a natural transition.

When is the right time for heat?

I’m cold.

You do understand it is still September as I am writing this column.

We have three thermostats in the house. In the kitchen, there is a fancy digital thing with a remote sensor. The “thing” that transmits the outside conditions is nailed on the siding below the clothesline. I never believe that one. I can be washing my dishes and the contraption will say it’s 102 outside and 125 inside. I know the sun is baking the siding; that’s why it’s reading so high outside.

As for the inside, maybe I’ve been baking pies this afternoon, or we don’t have insulation. It’s up for grabs on that one. There are other gauges in the house to check. One is the 1950s thermostat in the dining room. That thing is also never correct. But that’s a given. It’s old. The Galileo thermometer is on the fireplace mantel. It’s pretty with its colored floaty temperature balls. Thing is, I never understood how to use the darn thing. So, it’s useless.

I almost forgot!

We now have Alexa. It’s the all-in-one weather station, ordering device, music center and eavesdropping spy. It does a pretty good job at current temperatures though. So, I check most of the gauges. Some say it’s 72,

203.250.6445

another says 63 and the Galileo one, well, I don’t know what the heck it says.

But I am cold. And I am not the only one.

From the online town forum, I see my friends and Cheshire residents are also discussing temperatures and who has dared to turn on the heat. That’s almost sacrilegious.

Bryan posts, “Dads across town are cringing at this post!” Anne is an absolute no. “Not until December,” she says firmly. Until then, she “layers up with clothes and sleeps with the dogs.” And, yes, if you were wondering, that is where the saying, “It’sa three-dog night,” comes from, someone in New England vowing not to turn on the heat until they ran out of dogs.

Michelle says no to heat at her house, too.

“No heat on, Extra blanket on beds though. Hoodies are the style in the house around this time.”

My friend Donna said she was having a “diffi-

132

132

cult time in the house at 62-degrees,” and by the way, “Is anyone still running their pool filter?” she asks.

What?! Donna, we haven’t had sun in two months and it’s been raining every day forever.

That pool, as nice as it is, should have been tucked in back in June.

Pat and her family said they try to make it to November at their house. That’s how it works here at my house, too.

When we first moved in, I used to break up sticks from the yard and get the fireplace going.

I felt like a pioneer woman, scrambling around in the yard at 6 a.m. to find sticks to set on fire. I had no choice.

My hubby will not let me touch the thermostat until I am in six layers of clothing and there’s icicles on the dog. (No. No. We do not own a dog.)

Finally, there is Jim, a long-time Cheshire resident, who shuts everyone up by answering the “who’s cold” question with this: “Nope. Still have the windows open.”

Prepare for the upcoming winter season

Chesprocott Health District urges residents to prepare for the winter season

Fall is the perfect time to prepare for the upcoming winter season. Living in New England where the change of seasons is inevitable, we can anticipate the changing of the leaves, colder temperatures, snow, and the in-

crease winter illnesses.

The Chesprocott Health District recommends the following tips to stay safe and healthy this winter.

Prepare your Home Winterize your home; Install weather stripping, insulation, and storm windows; Clean out gutters and

repair roof leaks; Check your heating systems; Have your heating system serviced professionally to make sure that it is clean, working; properly, and ventilated to the outside.

If you do not have working smoke detectors, install one inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. Test batteries monthly and replace them twice a year. Prevent carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning emergencies; Install a battery-operated or battery backup CO detector to alert you of the presence of thedeadly, odorless, colorless gas. Check or change the battery when you change your clocks in the fall and spring; Learn the symptoms of CO poisoning: headache, dizziness, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion.

Prepare your Vehicle

Service the radiator and maintain the antifreeze level;Check your tires’ tread or, if necessary, replace tires with all-weather or snow tires; Keep the gas tank full to avoid ice in the tank and fuel lines; Use a wintertime formula in your windshield washer.

Prepare for Emergencies

Stock food that needs no cooking or refrigeration and water stored in clean containers; Ensure that your cell phone is fully charged; When planning travel, be aware of current and forecast weather conditions.

Keep an up-to-date emergency kit, including:

Battery-operated devices, such as a flashlight, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric; Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio, and lamps; Extra batteries; First-

aid kit and extra medicine; Baby items; and Cat litter or sand for icy walkways.

Take Care of your Health

Make an appointment to stay up to date on your vaccines including; Annual flu shot for those 6 months and over; The most updated Covid-19 vaccine; RSV vaccine for those 60 and older; The Pneumococcal and TDAP vaccines; Stay home when you are sick; Stay hydrated -this is just as important in the winter months; Stay active – rake leaves, go for brink walks or a hike, enjoy outdoor winter sports; Wash your hands frequently.

Plan an October weekend getaway

Fans of fall know that few things can beat the crisp, sunny afternoons of October. The early days of the month bring with them comfortable temperatures and beautiful vistas. Summer's heat and humidity often are things of the past, and time spent outdoors, whether raking leaves or tailgating at a football game, can be quite pleasant.

Early October is home to two holidays: Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day, which fall this year on Oct. 9. That means following the first full week of the month people in the United States have a chance to enjoy a three-day weekend to soak up all fall has to offer. Here are a few ideas.

Camping and hiking

Take in the awe of fall foliage up close and personal by visiting a rural area or park a short drive away from home. New York City residents, for example, can head to the Catskills, while Chicagoans can head to White Pines State Park. Different regions of the country will show off their fall colors at different times, and while foliage may be past peak, these two- to

three-hour drives be highly enjoyable.

Fall festivals

Check out the chamber of commerce or visitors' bureau websites of various cities and towns to see what is being offered relatively close by. Many will put on community fairs, festivals and the like. Columbus Day also presents a chance to celebrate Italian culture in many places, so Italian food and cultural festivals may be on the docket for those looking for such an excursion.

Skiing towns

When the last of the summer tourists depart from ski resort towns and the lull sets in before the winter ski season heats up, visitors to Colorado cities like Aspen or Telluride or the Vermont city of Stowe can find great deals on hotel stays and dine out at relatively empty restaurants.

Warm weather culture

People who are not ready to part with warm weather can head to Miami. Miami often puts on a huge festival on Columbus Day and people

from all over the world come to enjoy it. There's fun for all ages and guests are welcome to arrive in costume.

Indigenous cultures

Individuals looking to learn more about Native Ameri-

cans may want to travel to the states with the highest populations of Indigenous peoples. These include Alaska, Oklahoma, New Mexico, South Dakota, Montana, and North Dakota. It's likely celebrations will be held in these areas highlighting their dis-

tinct culture and heritage. Columbus Day weekend is an ideal time to get away before the rush of the holidays sets in soon enough.

TALAN BURR

SHEEHAN SOCCER

What’s in a name? Quite a bit, apparently. When it comes to scoring talent, Talan Burr has plenty, and he’s tallying goals at a rapid rate, a true burr in the sides of opponents. Sheehan’s senior striker rang up a pair of hat tricks over the past week — first against North Haven, then again this past Monday night against Lyman Hall. Those goals give Burr 11 on the season.

BRADY JACHYM

MALONEY SOCCER

You remember Rob Jachym? The Maloney soccer star who went on to play professionally? Well, the next generation has arrived. Rob’s son Brady is making a splash in his first varsity season. After missing his freshman year to injury, Brady Jachym opened his sophomore season with a hat trick versus Bloomfield and a goal and an assist in Monday’s win over E.O. Smith.

MELVIN ANGEL SANCHEZ, PLATT FOOTBALL

Platt’s young offense struggled to find its footing through the first two games of the football season. So, go figure: On a night of torrential rain that undermined far more seasoned attacks, junior quarterback Melvin Angel Sanchez and the Panthers hit their stride on Friday. Sanchez completed 9 of 12 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns in Platt’s 34-0 victory at Avon.

MAGGIE CORSO LYMAN HALL DIVING

Maggie Corso was a breakout performer in the Southern Connecticut Conference last fall, winning the league’s diving championship as a sophomore. As a junior, Corso is right back on course, and breaking records in the process. With a score of 255.80 last Tuesday against Jonathan Law, Corso eclipsed the Lyman Hall standard of 249.85 set by Victoria Wall in 2015.

LUCY DICKENSON CHESHIRE FIELD HOCKEY

Lucy Dickenson moved up to varsity this fall and don’t the Cheshire Rams just love her? The junior scored goals in Cheshire’s backto-back wins last week over two previously undefeated foes — the game-winner in overtime vs. Lauralton Hall and the next day at Sacred Heart. With another goal Saturday night in North Haven, Dickenson now has 5 on the season.

ELLIANA LOPEZ

WILCOX TECH SOCCER

Wilcox Tech girls soccer is one of those teams that doesn’t readily fit into the Athlete of the Week spotlight. The talent is too broad. But this 5-2-1 team is due, so we’ll go with the sophomore scoring machine, Elli Lopez, who registered two hat tricks last week in a four-game stretch that saw her compile 8 goals and 3 assists. She’s at 10 goals and 6 assists on the year.

Cheshire School District receives high marks

Niche.com recently released updated rankings for schools and school systems across America. Cheshire Public Schools has reached a new high with a ranking as the 11th best school district in Connecticut.

The previous best ranking was 14th in Connecticut in 2022. Niche.com also ranks school systems nationally. Cheshire initially broke into the Top 500 School systems in America in 2020 with a ranking of 488. The 2023 rank places Cheshire as the 363rd best school system in America.

Our individual schools also re-

ceived high praise. While Niche.com does not generally rank individual schools on a national scale, statewide rankings for schools are readily available. Of the 575 elementary schools in Connecticut, Cheshire schools faired very well. Norton School was ranked 46th in Connecticut.

Doolittle improved from 84 in 2022 to 77 in 2023. Chapman School jumped 20 spots to 44th this year and Highland improved 25 spots to be ranked 36th in Connecticut.

Dodd Middle School was rated 14th among 291 middle schools in Connecticut and

Cheshire Public Schools is excited to announce the grand opening of our new greenhouse.

The project was made possible through the Connecticut Grown for Connecticut Kids State Grant via the Connecticut Department of Agriculture for the 20222023 school year.

Cheshire Public Schools received $24,625 to purchase our 12x18 foot greenhouse featuring solar power irrigation and temperature control as well as rain water collection system for water-

ing.

An invitation-only ribboncutting event is scheduled for Thursday, Oct.

This event will showcase our celebration of Connecticut Grown for Connecticut Kids Week and feature a tour of the greenhouse, remarks from our Superintendent of Schools, Food Service Director, and local dignitaries.

took home the separate distinction of the Best Middle School in New Haven County. Finally, Cheshire High School was rated 23rd in Connecticut among the 202 public high schools in the state.

Cheshire Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Jeff Solan said, “While we don’t necessarily chase rankings, it is nice to see our consistent improvement over time in any measure. Every school but Norton (an already nationally recognized Blue Ribbon School) had their highest rankings of all time. Our success is a testament to our teachers, admin-

istrators, staff, parents, and especially our students. Our stakeholders have consistently focused on developing complex thinking in the classroom. Our students are learning strategies to tackle problems they have never faced before rather than strictly memorizing information. Learning how to conquer unique challenges can be very frustrating, but our students are also developing social-emotional skills for success wherever they face obstacles. The Cheshire Board of Education should also be commended for their steadfast support of complex thinking and social-emotional

learning. Their focus on providing academic and emotional assistance throughout the pandemic has played a crucial role in helping our staff and students find success.”

Niche.com indicates that “the 2023 Best School Districts ranking is based on rigorous analysis of key statistics and millions of reviews from students and parents using data from the U.S. Department of Education. Ranking factors include state test scores, college readiness, graduation rates, SAT/ACT scores, teacher quality, public school district ratings, and more.”

Election Day is set for Tuesday, Nov. 7. Between now and then, anyone seeking to submit a letter to the editor regarding an election-related issue or a political endorsement is asked to limit their letters to 200 words. Any letters that exceed this word limit risk not being published prior to the election. Also, all letters are subject to review for content and appropriatness and can be rejected if determined to not meet the standards set forth for both.

While we will endeavor to print all letters submitted, publication is not guaranteed as it will be dependent on space limitations.

features four bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths. An ensuite bathroom, hot tub, walk-in closet, office, and gym can be found as well as a primary bedroom.

The large kitchen encompasses white cabinets and countertops, an island that seats two and stainless steel appliances.

Enjoy an open living space with large windows letting in lots of natural light and framing panoramic views of the idyllic scenery.

The patios provide plenty of entertaining space and a view of a tranquil pond. The property also comes with a separate four horse barn, horse ring and riding trails that wind through the surrounding woods.

Hickory Hill Orchards’ onfarm store, operated with the same owner for over 45 years, has long been a community favorite. The farm sold its fruit to customers such as Whole Foods and Stop & Shop and offered the first public apple picking in Connecticut along with fall hayrides long ago.

Due to its landscape and excellent facilities including hundreds of parking spots, the property often hosted large events. With a vision and a plan, Hickory Hill Orchards could be further developed into smaller properties with shared access to the farm’s resources.

You can find a golf course, health club, lake, public pool, private schools, library, park, and playground/tot lot

near the property.

Martinis for Memories set

Alzheimer’s Disease is one that currently impacts over 80,000 Connecticut families. And it is the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association to provide services, raise awareness and support the funding of research. In order to meet the mission of the Association, they depend on the fundraising efforts of individuals and companies.

One such fundraiser is the “Martinis for Memories”

Mary Underwood, a

Cheshire resident, is an advocate and volunteer for the Alzheimer’s Association, CT Chapter and is the one behind the event. “The disease is very serious and impacts so many families in a negative way”, Underwood stated. She went on to say, “So we want to have an event that is fun, uplifting and full of hope. And that is what this evening is going to be all about. While we will be having a great time, we will also be raising money for research and services.”

There will be several silent

auction items including a Coach bag and wallet, a Kate Spade bag, a one hour massage, and gift certificates to local golf related businesses.

In addition, there are raffle prizes available, a door prize, and martini BINGO.

“We are able to provide all the proceeds to the Association because of the generosity of so many individuals and businesses,” Underwood explained. “Every raffle, door prize and silent auction item was donated. Most by someone who was impacted by the disease,” Underwood explained.

The event is being held at Serafino’s Restaurant on Oct. 11. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with tastings beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 each, $35 for those currently caring for someone with dementia.

For more information, visit Martinis for Memories” Facebook event or email Un-

derwood at memorycaremary@gmail.com.

Residents looking to report a street takeover are encouraged to call 1-800-CALL-FBI and select the “Connecticut Street Takeovers” option, or visit fbi.gov/cttakeovertips.

Zukis

in her instruction. She gets to know kids exactly where they are and brings out the best in them. She’s got such a presence about her, that she can give kids whatever is needed at that moment, whether that’s calm or excited. It’s pretty awesome to watch,” added Grillo. “She’s such a special gift to our profession.”

Zukis points to the Circle of Security training, which she participated in as a parent and a teacher. It is an innovative model, taught in Cheshire, which encourages students to develop the courage to explore while giving care-givers the tools to support them.

“I also have extensive training in Responsive Classroom, ” Zukis explained. “What initially helped me was that the town offered an opportunity for teachers to go to a one-week training

that emphasized a positive approach based on proactive discipline rather than punitive.”

“You’re modeling expectations and gaining the trust of students by letting them know (the classroom) is a safe place. I’ve also worked a lot on teacher language being concise and telling kids what I expect,” she continued.

Zukis attributes her educational philosophy to her own experience of feeling challenged in school at an early age, struggling with reading.

“At this point in my career, I can really appreciate all the teachers that stayed patient with me. Some kids pick (reading) up quickly, but I stayed positive because of my teachers and parents. They kept reassuring me it would come, and it did.”
