For at least the next two years, a new political era is taking shape in Cheshire.
Outgoing Town Clerk Laura Brennan officially began the Town Council Organizational Meeting. Brennan is retiring after more than 30 years of working in the Clerk’s office, having recommended Patti King to take over that role. King, who was endorsed by both political parties as well on the way to an uncontested election win, was already busy with transition planning, making sure that the keeping of official records and other duties continue to be done in the same professional manner as her predecessors.
Democratic majorities on the Town Council and Board of Education especially will have the opportunity to shape policies that affect the town. These newly-elected and reelected officials — also including members of the Planning and Zoning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, Constables, and Board of Assessment Appeals — were sworn into office in a brief ceremony on Monday, Dec. 4 in Town Council chambers. State Representatives Liz Linehan (D-103) and Lezlye Zupkus (R-89) administered the oaths of office to members of their respective parties, leading one observer to suggest that the partisan politics of election season had not ended in November. That observation proved
Following Brennan’s call for nominations, the new Council immediately proceeded to elect, as expected, long-time Councillor Peter Talbot as Chair. Fellow Democrat Jim Jinks was elected as Vice-Chair. Both votes were unanimous. See Leaders, A12

It looks nice there, and it’s the traditional thing to do, but the tree took up the whole room. We basically had to move all the furniture out just for that darn tree. I had to sit on a footstool to watch TV. We could barely get a guest into the front room. My in-laws tree is something else. My father-in-law goes to his favorite rural tree farm and cuts one down. I should explain here — he goes for the largest tree, and then cuts the top off. Mind you, he leaves the rest of the tree. But that tree topper? It’s enormous. It takes three

Talbot delivered a brief speech, thanking supporters, including his family, and describing his lifelong interest in serving the town.
While crash locations change from year to year, areas that show concentrations of crashes were evident in the DOT’s study. An analysis by DOT engineers yielded some interesting data that was cause for concern, Sylvestre said.
His childhood friend, Cathy Ulozas, was the daughter of the late Edward Ulozas, a Council Chair in the early 1970s who helped change Cheshire’s governance from the “first selectman” model to the current Town Manager and Town Council structure. Talbot mentioned hours of conversation between the young people and the elder Ulozas, learning about local politics and government.

two years ago for low-income renters in certain ZIP codes and veterans statewide. It’s a collaboration of several legal aid groups across the state.
The report also found that the legal aid program likely saved Connecticut millions it would have otherwise spent on services such as emergency shelters, child welfare or health resources.
The state was the third to launch a right-to-counsel program and used $20 million in COVID-19 relief money. Officials have said they expect those funds to last until next year. A January report found that the program had broadly increased the number of tenants who have legal counsel in eviction proceedings. Landlords are much more likely to have legal representation.
Some landlords have criticized the program, saying it results in more costs to landlords and slows down the process. Of 901 fatal crashes, however, 284 took place on curves (32%). “Looking at these numbers, it’s clear that curves are a prime location for crashes,” stated Sylvestre. “We can improve driver awareness and response to curves through warning signs,” she added. The DOT relied partially on the University of Connecticut’s Crash Data Repository to make its determinations.
