‘Right to Read’ sparks concern

After passage of ‘Right to Read’ legislation in 2021, the State Department of Education has approved the implementation of specific reading curricula and programs for kindergarten through third grade by July 1 of this year. However, many districts across the state are opting to submit a waiver to continue to offer their current curricula.

“At this point, we have significant concerns about the state basically dictating what program we’ll use to teach students the curriculum,” said Jeff Solan, superintendent of Cheshire Public Schools.

Arrest made following school bomb threat

Tuesday morning, the North Haven Police Department was contacted by a woman claiming that her daughter was afraid to go to school that day due to a bomb threat. Police said the caller was uncooperative and would not provide further information prior to hanging up. The call came in at approximately 7 a.m. The school in question is located in North Haven, but is not a public school.

Tips from the North Haven Garden Club’s Cindy Golia: Succulents do love direct sunlight, but just putting them in a sunny spot and expecting them to grow might not be enough.

Light

Make sure your succulents are getting enough light. Depending on the type of succulent, they need about six hours of sun per day. Avoid putting newly-planted succulents in direct sunlight; this can scorch your plants. So, gradually introduce them to full sun exposure or provide shade with a sheer curtain.

Rotate

Rotate your plants. Succulents love direct sun, but if they’re sitting in the same spot, only one side is getting enough light. Succulents will lean towards the sun, so rotating them will help them stand up straight. Also, a leaning plant may be a sign that it needs to be in a sunnier spot.

Water

Water according to the season. Succulents need more energy when they are in the growth stage. In spring and summer, your plants will thrive and drink up more water then in the fall and winter when they are resting. Test the soil with your finger. If the top 1.25 inches are dry, it’s time to water. But don't over-water, it can kill your succulent. So, make sure you let the soil dry between watering.

Make sure you soak the soil until the water runs out through the drainage holes. If your container doesn't have drainage, water less. And don’t use a spray bottle to water your succulents. This can cause brittle roots and moldy leaves. You can

also place plant pots in a pan of water and allow the water to absorb through the drainage holes. Once the top soil is moist, remove the plants.

Clean

Keep your succulents clean. Leaves can get dusty, like the rest of our homes in the winter. Wipe off the leaves and spines with a damp cloth. Be gentle. You can use a soft paintbrush to get at hard-to-reach spots.

Container

Choose a container with drainage. Succulents don't like to sit in waterlogged soil; this will prevent root rot. So if you can, use a pot with drainage holes.

Soil

Succulents need soil that drains. Cactus soil is perfect for planting. Dirt from your yard or regular potting soil

will not do. Succulent roots are very fragile, so be gentle when repotting. You can also use a blend of organic potting soil and volcanic pumice for maximum drainage.

Bugs

Pests shouldn’t be a problem for indoor succulents. Sometimes, though, you may have to deal with bugs. When the soil is too wet or has improper drainage, you can attract gnats. To get rid of eggs and larvae, spray the soil with 70 percent isopropyl alcohol. Common causes of mealybugs is over-watering and over-fertilizing. Move infected plants away from other succulents and spray with 70 percent isopropyl alcohol.

Fertilize

Fertilize your succulents in the summer. They don't need too much fertilizer; light feedings during the

MONEY MATTERS: Insurance options worth considering

How confident are you about the insurance strategies you have in place to protect against an unexpected turn in your life? Do you feel like you have a clear handle on how to manage your insurance needs effectively? Before you answer, here are five aspects of insurance coverage that may surprise you:

Even a stay-at-home spouse may need life insurance.

We tend to think of insurance as something to replace income that would be lost if a person dies. But household contributions aren’t limited to take-home pay. For example, a stay-at-home spouse might fulfil a role – such as childcare and housekeeping – that would be expensive to replicate if they were no longer around. Think about the financial impact that loss would have on the

overall budget and expenses of the household. An appropriate life insurance policy can help mitigate that burden at a time when mourning families have plenty of other worries.

Single people should be protected, too.

Assuming you have no dependents, there may be no obvious reason to have life insurance. But if you pass away unexpectedly, you may leave behind some expenses, such as funeral costs. Also, if you carry debts that outstrip your assets, family members may have to assume responsibility for them. One more consideration: Life insurance may be more economical if you buy it when you’re younger and healthy.

Insuring the lives of children.

How would your life be affected if your child passed away? Would it impact your ability, at least for a time, to carry on with work and other aspects of your life?

While it’s a terrible prospect to have to contemplate, it’s a possibility for which you may want some financial protection. Life insurance for a young, healthy person can be very cost effective.

Too many people risk being underinsured.

According to a 2021 study, just 47 percent of women have life insurance coverage in place compared to 58 percent of men.

In most cases today, the need for insurance coverage is generally equal regardless of gender.

The importance of disability coverage.

Suffering a disabling injury or illness that sidelines you from work can have a dramatic impact on your income. Most people make life insurance a priority, but for those who do not, the result is bills that risk going unpaid and financial goals unmet.

Reviewing your protection needs is an important part of the financial planning process. Talk to your financial advisor if you have any concerns about your own coverage.

Local wordsmith kicks off second grade poetry unit

This week, second-grade students throughout North Haven Schools spent some time with Gabriella Brand, the town's Poet Laureate. “I have been writing since I was about your age,” Brand told students. “I write about anything that comes to mind, and it all starts in my head.”

Brand's school visit kicked off the poetry unit in grade two.

The local writer told students she likes going for hikes, and that those adventures typically spark an idea for a new poem.

Brand also talked about her role as North Haven's Poet Laureate. She received the title in February of 2022, and has acted as an ambassador of poetry-writing throughout the community.

In Joanne Callahan’s class, Brand showed students one

of the oldest books she owns, a well-worn collection of rhyming words which the youngsters perused and passed around.

Tracey Gambardella, K-8 Language Arts Coordinator, organized Brand's appearance at Montowese, Green Acres, Clintonville and Ridge Road schools.

“We’re grateful for not only the experience but for Ms. Gambardella’s effort to make this happen,” Green Acres Principal Christian Strickland said.

Gambardella said, “At the end of the day, I want the kids in the North Haven Public Schools to be lifelong passionate readers and writers for the rest of their lives.”

Right to Read

From A1

“I fully appreciate that the state can articulate what the standards should be, but not how we should teach it,” Solan said. “So at this point, we’re going to be pursuing the waiver process.”

In June 2021, the Right to Read legislation was passed as part of Sections 394-404 of the Budget Implementer Bill (Public Act No. 21-22).

“The legislation systematizes a statewide reading response based on the Science of Reading by requiring the state to oversee all state and local efforts related to literacy, including setting reading curriculum requirements for districts, providing professional development, hiring external literacy coaches and coordinating with teacher preparation programs, ” according to the legislation’s website. “A newly established Center for Literacy Research and Reading Success (The Center) will be the hub of that work.”

The Center has various components to its legislative mandates, including establishing the center itself, creating universal K-3 reading assessments and more.

At a webinar hosted by the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education on Jan. 6, state Department of Education representatives shared that prior to the pandemic, 54 percent of Connecticut public school students in third grade were proficient in English language arts (ELA). This means that about 17,000 students in the state’s public schools were not proficient. Now, after the pandemic, the proficiency rate is 47 percent, so around 19,000 students are not proficient in ELA.

As of Jan. 6, the state had approved seven curriculum models/programs, with two more being under review. However, district leaders opting to submit a waiver, due Feb. 28 by 5 p.m.,

would require the district to submit:Data collected from reading assessments that are disaggregated by race, ethnicity, gender, eligibility for free or reduced price lunches, students whose primary language is not English and students with disabilities; A strategy to address remaining achievement gaps as the existence of a significant disparity in the academic performance of students among and between racial groups, ethnic groups, socioeconomic groups, genders and English language learners and students whose primary language is English.

Along with this, districts must demonstrate that their reading curriculum/model is evidenced-based and scientifically based. It must also focus on areas of reading including: oral language, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, rapid automatic name or letter name fluency, reading comprehension and phonemic awareness.

At the webinar hosted by CABE last Friday, Melissa K. Wlodarczyk Hickey, director of the Center for Literacy Research and Reading Success for the state Department of Education, said that all waivers will have to undergo a review process.

“Reviewers may have questions so it may become more of a back and forth than just a, ‘This is what you provided to us to review, therefore that’s all we’re going to be looking at,’” Hickey said. “So right now we really can’t assign a date because we want to make sure we’re doing each and every review in a very meticulous way.”

Hickey did ensure that the districts who submit waivers will hear back by the July 1 deadline of when the new curricula has to be adopted.

At the webinar, Hickey did mention that the state is hoping to offer grants for districts to assist with the costs of purchasing materials.

We are collecting non-perishable food, as well as dog and cat food, pet treats and supplies, and old eyeglasses. Also, the North Haven Leos will be there to accept your recyclable bottles and cans.

Donations will help restock the local food pantries, provide supplies to Fidelco guide dogs and The Animal Haven, and support the Lions Recycle for Sight Program and Connecticut Lions Eye Research Foundation. The following items are in most need: Parmalat milk, juice, canned fruit, jelly, mayonnaise (30 oz.), coffee, pasta sauce (24 oz. jars), rice, dried/canned beans and baked beans, Milk-Bone

dog biscuits, blankets and towels.

The North Haven Lions have served our town since 1952. Through Second Saturday activities, the Lions engage in service projects for our community. Walmart stores going bagless

As of July 2021, Connecticut state law banned single-use plastic bags. Now, Walmart is taking it a step further by eliminating all single-use plastic and paper bags at checkouts across the state beginning Wednesday, Jan. 18.

Delivery will continue to utilize paper bags, and stores will continue providing single-use bags in areas that prevent food contamination or as required by law.

“Eliminating single-use bags in Connecticut is part of our effort to reduce waste,” said Jane Ewing, senior vice president of Walmart Sustainability.
