Mask, test kit distribution continues

Holly and Garland – wearing new sweaters – are pictured at the Animal Haven in North Haven. As of last week, these girls were waiting to be adopted. “You truly can not get sweeter than these two gals,” the Animal Haven wrote in a Feb. 1 social media post.

For North Haven residents who have yet to take advantage of the town's offer of free COVID-19 test kits and N95 protective masks, there is still time to collect those items. Through the end of February, locals who have not yet received test kits or N95s may obtain them at the North Haven Library, Senior Center, Recreation Center or Community Services office.

‘Betty White Challenge’ raises funds for local animal shelters By Jessica Simms Special to the Record-Journal

To honor what would’ve been Betty White’s 100th birthday on Jan. 17, a viral fundraiser for animal shelters and rescue services took place nationwide.

"We will be able to accommodate you at any time during the month of February at the published times," Freda stated in a message to residents. "All we will ask for is a proof of residency and our staff will track the actual distribution of the products." Each household is allowed two COVID19 test kits containing a total of four tests, along with a supply of N-95 masks, which are designed to form a seal around the nose and mouth, creating efficient filtration of airborne particles. ACES, partners to create Spanish language early learning center By Karla Santos Record-Journal staff

Did you ever wish your child started learning Spanish as early as pre-kindergarten? A bilingual Spanish-English education center for children age 3 to 5 is scheduled to launch this fall. The initiative is a partnership between the Helen Doron Educational Group and North Haven-based Area Cooperative Educational Services.

Helen Doron has more than 1,000 learning centers in 37 countries, but the school opening later this year will be the group’s first in the United States. While stakeholders have not determined which town in Connecticut will host the language center, they do know they want to bring stimulating and enriching activities to young children. Jason Hiruo, international education director of ACES, said

there’s a science behind the acquisition of language at an early age. “Kids are sponges at such an early age and we want to grab that,” he said. Repeated hearing, positive reinforcement, small group learning and technology are part of the methodology behind the center. Music will also be a part of the curriculum with the goal of helping stimulate children’s See Center, A3

MONEY MATTERS

Child care: A considerable expense of parenthood The current shortage of affordable, quality childcare options is helping drive up costs for parents across the nation.

Nannies and au pairs. Hiring a nanny is often the most expensive childcare option. You’re paying for the convenience of a dedicated, inhome provider, but you may also need to fund room and board and make a car available for their use.

If you know you will be needing childcare coverage in the near future, here are some ways to plan for and manage this considerable expense of parenthood.

A nanny-share arrangement can help reduce your cost for this form of care if you can get by with fewer hours of coverage or find someone willing to take on multiple children.

“The (governor’s) announcement was just made yesterday,” Lungarini said. “I think it would be fair to give the schools, principals and community a chance before making any decisions. We feel we can play safe without masks and we will continue to have these conversations.” Lungarini said the CIAC, DPH and state officials have had a working relationship throughout the pandemic. “State leadership has done a good job keeping schools in session and athletics going, even as we went through that uptick," Lungarini said. “We were able to maintain learning interscholastic play. We engage with 30,000 kids a season and it shows the work that has been put in and how safe we play, even when faced with adversity we continue to give kids a good experience.” Since vaccines became available last summer for kids age 12 to 17, the CIAC has recommended vaccinations as the best way for teams and athletes to stay in the game.

Winter Weather Protocols Personal safety

Treated salt

Older residents and those with health problems are reminded to avoid the extreme physical activity connected with shoveling snow. Also, skiers, operators of snowmobilers and all-terrain vehicles are advised to keep vehicles off town streets at all times.

In the event of a winter storm resulting in mixed or frozen precipitation or at the beginning of a snowstorm, all roads will receive an application of treated salt normally within the first three hours, then as needed.

Travel safety

During storms (usually greater than two inches accumulation) town crews will plow based on established town priorities. Main roads are first, followed by residential streets with one pass in either direction until the snow ceases. Then all roads are plowed to the curb.

When traveling, exercise extreme caution. During winter storm events, limit travel to trips which are absolutely necessary. Please keep a minimum of 75 feet from snow control vehicles.

This will minimize the amount that will be pushed back into the driveway.
