Bishop has been around the rugged sport of rugby for over a decade. Since falling in love with it while studying abroad in Ireland, she

Officials address rise in car-related crimes

Residents are concerned about the increase in crime locally – car break-ins in particular – and want to know what can be done to slow the trend.

“The vast majority of stolen vehicles tend to be unlocked, with keys in the vehicle, or cars left running unattended,” North Haven Deputy Chief of Police Andrew Stavrides said.

Fundraisers planned for family of firefighter

Press Release

On Dec. 26, 2022, North Haven firefighter Matthias Wirtz lost his life while fighting a structure fire.

The North Haven Professional Firefighters Association, the DeMartino family, and several restaurants in town have planned three fundraisers to benefit the family of the fallen firefighter.

“In some circumstances, forced entry did occur, but those incidents are not as common, ” he added.

The NHPD has seen an increase in vehicle thefts for three straight years. In 2020, 35 were reported, and in 2021, the number jumped to 49.

In 2022, Stavrides said local police responded to 68 thefts; a 38 percent increase from the previous year.

Our chance to change course in Connecticut

We all have many important priorities – families, business owners, tradespeople, teachers, working professionals, to name a few. Of these, some are universal. You want to know you can afford to keep

the lights on and gas in your tank, that your kids are safe at school and home, and that the police are working to keep your neighborhood safe from crime. You also want to make sure your family's health is taken care of and that you have the opportunity to make a decent living, and that your kids have the same chance, no

matter what job they do.

These are the messages that shaped my priorities during my first term in Hartford as your representative. During the 2023 legislative session, I am continuing my efforts for the families of the 34th District – now including the families of Northford.

The issue of affordability affects us all. Essential items that were once affordable are now at record highs, and the recent spike in energy rates has added to our challenges. Families are being forced to choose between essential items just to stretch their budgets. This is unacceptable. My goal is to support bills that bring relief to overtaxed residents. While tax holidays are a temporary solution, permanent relief is needed.

One solution is eliminating the unfair "Truck Tax" on trucks carrying essential products and services in Connecticut.

This tax will drive up the cost of essential goods and services even more. The state's gas and diesel tax should also be suspended. Additionally, we can make energy more affordable and reduce costs immediately by eliminating senseless fees on customer energy bills. These ideas and others are outlined in our Senate and House Republican plan for "A Better Way to Energy Affordability."

To make the state affordable, we must keep spending in check. I continue to support policies that use your hardearned dollars responsibly and in measured ways. In addition to affordability, public safety is essential to our quality of life and is the most basic duty of our government. We have all seen increases in crime and aggressive driving across the state. That's why I have had multiple meetings with local law enforcement to get their professional feedback and

develop solutions to address these trends.

As the ranking member of the Public Safety and Security Committee, I have offered these solutions through the Senate Republican SaferCT plan. Everyone deserves to feel safe in their homes, at the grocery store, gas station, or while driving to work.

A safer Connecticut is not possible without the opportunity for all residents to prosper. Access to well-paying careers is a major factor in preventing crime, and I introduced a plan last year to provide these opportunities. I was proud to see my legislation enacted that creates an “education-to-workforce” pipeline, connecting young people to career paths. I am building on this momentum in 2023. I have offered legislative proposals to develop programs that provide information on

Car thefts

From A1

These statistics are not unusual. Since 2020, the start of the pandemic, police throughout the country have seen an increase in car breakins and thefts. Oftentimes, car crimes are perpetrated by juveniles.

Last summer, Gov. Ned Lamont signed into law Public Act 22-115, which updated Connecticut’s criminal justice statutes. Lamont said the changes aim to make "juvenile arrest and delinquency proceedings swifter with more information for courts to review, provide more intensive responses to the small number of juveniles with serious and repeated charges, and restructure motor vehicle theft laws to focus on people with prior offenses. ”

Recently, the theft of a car in Wallingford led to a drive-by purse-snatching in Meriden where a victim was dragged under the car.

In another troubling incident, a victim left their car

Housing plan

A draft of North Haven’s 2022-27 Affordable Housing Plan is available on the municipal website. The state require that all 169 Connecticut municipalities prepare and adopt an affordable housing plan at least once every five years. The statute requires that the plan specify how a municipality intends to increase its number of affordable housing options.

Lions Club

The North Haven Lions Club has served the town since 1952. Through Second Saturday activities, the Lions

unattended at a gas pump and the perpetrator jumped in and drove off, snapping off the hose that was still connected to the vehicle.

Deputy Chief Stavrides indicated that police departments don't have the resources to simply stamp out car crimes. He pointed out that the NHPD had 2,258 calls for service in January. These can be anything from a downed tree blocking a road, to a fist fight. No matter the reason, those calls tie up police personnel.

Deputy Chief Frederick Jortner of the Cheshire Police Department said there is no “100% foolproof method” to prevent car burglaries or thefts.

However, he said people should get into a nightly routine making sure their vehicle is locked and protected.

“Make sure your car doors are locked at night before you go to bed,” Jortner said.

“Make sure your valuables are secure, your car is locked. That will reduce victimization.”
