Letters to the Editor Don’t undermine the chief Editor : I would like to state facts about the fire at Mossberg firearms in North Haven earlier this month. This incident originated as a fire alarm, a type of call that some people in town have downplayed. While en route to the scene, multiple 911 calls came in. The incident was then upgraded to structure fire response, dispatching additional apparatus to the scene.

Considering the type of building, hazardous materials present and potential for significant fire spread, a second engine arriving on scene so fast made a significant difference. This was made possible by Fire Chief Paul Januszewski’s foresight and the backing of the majority of fire commissioners. Januszewski saw a need for a second, full-time staffed firehouse (Montowese) and a second tier of officers and captains.

Douglas Spencer, a UConn law professor, added the state ridicule law, in theory, could be used to arrest comedians who make fun of others. “I don’t think the old statute would survive a constitutional challenge,” Spencer said. Scot X. Esdaile, president of the Connecticut State Conference of the NAACP, said that the bill to repeal the law raises serious concerns and that he will seek opinions from civil
rights lawyers and NAACP officials about the proposal. The state Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities has asked the Judiciary Committee to reject the repeal bill, in written testimony for the hearing. “At a time when hate and bias incidents are on the rise, it is critical that the state not remove these types of prohibitions that aim to deter or punish this unacceptable behavior,” the commission said.
