It was one year ago that our world changed, restaurants and shops closed, and our communities went into isolation. As an organization that exists to foster networking and making connections in the community between businesses and clients, it appeared to be the worst of times ahead for the Quinnipiac Chamber of Commerce.

There was excitement Friday among the CIAC, area YMCAs and area youth sports organizations following the news that Gov. Ned Lamont was lifting restrictions on sports starting March 19. In Wallingford, the Wallingford Hawks youth hockey organization was pleased to hear the news. League president David Fritz said he will reach out to his coaches in hopes of setting up a postseason tournament in the coming weeks. “Tournaments were banned until yesterday,” Fritz noted. “Usually, he have

Yet a year later, that is not the case. Under Garrett Sheehan’s leadership and the tireless efforts of past Executive Director Dee PriorNesti, Gary Ciarleglio and Maribel Mendez Carrion, the Quinnipiac Chamber has persevered. Through its partnership with the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, the Quinnipiac Chamber has been able to deliver over 60 webinars in the past year, ranging from how to navigate complex government programs, such as the Paycheck Protection Program, to a recent meeting with Wallingford Town Health Department Director Stephen Civitelli. In this recent call, 25 manufacturers joined to discuss how to facilitate vaccine distribution to thousands of essential workers critical to the supply chain and regional economy. Right now, only one parent per child is allowed. The Meriden YMCA basketball program currently has 180 athletes. As far as high school sports, CIAC Executive Director Glenn Lungarini said the CIAC would meet this week to discuss the news. “The announcement was encouraging,” Lungarini said Friday. “All spring sports were previously announced, with state tournaments, and yesterday’s announcement supports us moving forward with that plan.”

“Our board will meet ... and will review Thursday’s news, but I don’t anticipate any changes as far as tournaments,” Lungarini said. Then there’s wrestling, a winter sport that never got off the mat this season. It was considered high-risk for the spread of COVID-19 and the Connecticut Department of Public Health recommended it not be staged. Come March 19, wrestling, like all sports, is a go. Will the CIAC make anything available for those athletes?

“We will be doing it in a smart and safe way,” Benigni said. “We are still practicing social distancing and mask wearing. We are still doing proper hand washing, but we are going to be offering more programs and more participants when the governor’s new regulations go into effect on March 19.”

Fritz said the league has maintained safe protocols, and a 20-year tradition of taking six Hawks teams to Lake Placid, N.Y. was broken.
“More people have been using our programs and are coming in to work out, and that’s because of the combination of the pandemic going in the right direction and having vaccines and the weather breaking,” Benigni said. “We are experiencing more people using our services.”

Local auto dealer buys bowling alley By Nick Sambides Jr. Record-Journal staff
WALLINGFORD — An auto dealership’s recent purchase of a 61-year-old bowling alley might clear the way for a new dealership on Route 5. Michael Mauro of the realty agency Mauro Associates purchased the 29,189square-foot Colony Lanes bowling alley at 600 S. Colony Road for $935,000, according to a statement released by Geenty Group Realtors of Branford. With the sale, Bowlero Wallingford Bowl at 980 N. Colony Road is the last element of Wallingford’s bowling history. During a short time in the early 1960s, the town had four bowling al-
leys, including two now defunct duckpin lanes, at 107 S. Colony St. and 154 Center St., and the two regular alleys on Route 5. The Porto family of Wallingford built and opened the South Colony bowling alley in 1960 and it closed in 2018, after renovations to Wallingford Bowl were completed. Mauro is the principal at Mauro Motors Inc., which owns Town & Country Auto Body of North Haven and BMW and MercedesBenz dealerships at 610 and 620 Washington Ave. in North Haven, according to several online business directories. The deal closed Feb. 25, said Kevin Geenty, who represented the seller. The bowl-

sidelines to the spotlight. Thanks to weight loss surgery.
Excess weight used to prevent Lynne Weeks from doing the things she loved. She often stayed behind when her family went hiking, as the climbs were too strenuous. And although she loved dancing, she stayed a spectator because she did not believe she could do it. Those days ended after Lynne turned to Hartford HealthCare for weight loss surgery. “There was never a thought for me to go anywhere else.” She credits the procedure with completely changing her life. Lynne now enjoys competitive ballroom dancing. She also hikes with her family, and regularly works out at a gym. Lynne enjoys these activities so much that she is working to becoming a personal trainer for people who’ve had bariatric surgery. “I want them to see me, and know that I was once that person.”

Obituaries NORTH HAVEN- Faye Keller Clarke, age 86, died at home in the arms of her loving husband Mike Clarke on February 20, 2021. Faye and Mike were married for over 64 years. Faye was the daughter to the late Arthur and Helen Keller. She was predeceased by her sister Helene Humphries and brother Arthur Keller. She is survived by her seven loving children, four from the marriage, three adopted; twelve much loved grandchildren; and one much loved greatgrandchild: Her daughter Cathy and her husband David Dutkowski and their children Danial and Cayla; David and his wife Adrienne and their children Nerissa and husband Farhat, who much to the delight of Faye announced they are expecting, and Maxwell and wife Laura and daughter Genevieve; Paul and his wife Anne and their children Chris and Caitlin; Karen and her husband John Conlin and their children Thea, Owen, and Della; Cam and her husband Louis King and their child Jennifer; Fred Clarke; and Curtis Clarke and his child Coral. In addition, she was a loving Foster Mom to over 50 children in need of a temporary home. Faye was a 1956 graduate of Russell Sage College in Troy, NY with a B.S. in Nursing. She started her career at Grace New Haven Hospital as the Charge Nurse of the Rooming In section of the Obstetrics Floor. Part of her responsibilities was teaching nursing students how to teach the parents in rooming how to take care of their baby. She loved that aspect of her job. She resigned that position to
start a family and Cathy was born in July 1957. Over the years she worked at various nursing jobs, all arranged so she could be there for her family; including part-time work in Nursing Homes, filling in for school nurses, summer camp nursing, and VNA nursing. She loved to teach about nursing and did so, instructing prenursing students at the high school and nursing students at the Hospital. Throughout her life Faye was always involved in community volunteer activities. In 1978, the American Mothers Committee of Connecticut, part of a nationwide group, designated Faye Mother of The Year for her motherhood and community efforts. This elicited an Official Statement from Governor Grasso honoring Faye for her accomplishments. When her children were in school, she became active in the PTA, serving as president of Center School PTA and was later elected to President of PTA Council for North Haven. As a Democrat, she became a member of the Democrat Town Committee for the rest of her life. Later, ran for and won a seat on the Board of Education for two
terms. Subsequently, she ran for First Selectman and State Representative, and ended up as Third Selectman for two years. Faye was always active as a member of the Methodist church, first in North Haven and later at First and Summerfield United Methodist in New Haven. Active as a Girl Scouts leader, she taught Red Cross first aid to Girl Scouts in North Haven. She grew interested in volunteering for the Red Cross and became a disaster nurse, requiring her to attend a number of both local and travel disasters on the east coast, where she assisted with setting up shelters and providing medical care to victims. She was also a coordinator for programs like Friendly Town. Faye was always just a phone call away from anyone in need of a listening ear, offering support and advice and willing to place a phone call to someone else who could help. She was a fighter for justice and equality all her life. Her family will always remember the gift of time we had during the frequent trips she and Mike made to each of our homes, providing love and support. A Memorial Service celebrating Faye’s life will be held at a later date. BEECHER & BENNETT FUNERAL HOME, 2300 Whitney Avenue, Hamden is in care of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations in Faye’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice. To send condolences to her family, please see obituary at www. beecherandbennett.com.

Invest in all efforts necessary to save our planet The North Haven Garden Club received two entries for an essay contest sponsored by the National Garden Club. The following essay is by Tariq El Mammann, a sophomore at North Haven High School.
Adapting to protect natural habitats Top challenges for habitats consist of, reduced water quantities, demands on land resources, overgrazing and fire suppression, climate change, limited understanding of complex natural systems, species on the brink, habitat loss, illegal wildlife trade, air and ocean plastic pollution. The term “natural habitat” refers to an environment occurring naturally in forests, wetlands, deserts, grasslands and the Arctic tundra, which supports a particular species through a natural provision of water, shelter, an area conducive to birthing, and food. Our natural habitats took thousands, if not millions of years to form. Each natural habitat therefore is capable of adapting and sustaining itself.
However, over time, human activities and climate change on earth have become factors presenting the challenges facing all-natural habitats today. In order to understand these challenges, it is empirically necessary that the approach adopted addresses each with all the resources available. Additionally, each and every one of us must invest in all the efforts necessary to save our planet. Therefore, solutions preferred must be responsive to each natural habitat, as no one solution fits all. Habitats occur in nature but may also be designed and fabricated by man. Both types of habitats – manmade or natural – in essence serve as an environment in which a species can live and thrive. Some of the challenges we face are man-made: humans creating habitats as an environment for species (human and animal alike) to live and strive, that, in the process, become intrusive or invasive to natural habitats, thereby compromising and disturbing the organically-formed habitat. Such human activities include pollution, building infrastructure such as roads, factories, bridges, deforestation, and urban expansion.
These activities present challenges in the preservation and sustainability of any natural habitat whether in the wetlands, rain forest, deserts, grasslands, or arctic tundra. In Brazil, the rainforest, which is the largest natural habitat, faces one of the greatest challenges of all-natural habitats due to massive logging activities, man-made fires and city encroachments, thus, displacing natural habitats. The rainforest natural habitat as a whole has dropped from 15 to 6 percent over the last 200 years. There are many reasons for this, but I can easily say that a lot, if not most of them, are due to human activity. These reasons can vary from just human population growth in or near rainforests, to deforestation-for-profit, litter, and pollution. There is also the demand for resources in rainforests that could be varieties of foods and beverages and even materials and rare virtues. The rainforests can also face threats from other organisms besides humans, so even though there are a lot of threats by humans, like mining and plantations for accessing goods, there is also the threat of invasive species. Yes, they are different or-
ganisms, but humans can also be held responsible for this form of damage. We are at times responsible for introducing invasive species to their “targets.” The main reason humans face such a hard time preserving this form of habitat is due to our reliance on the resources we are so desperate for in rainforests. No matter how hard people try to spread awareness of what is happening to rainforests, there are still people and businesses that insist on being stubborn for their own profit. It is important for human activities to cooperate with nature and not against it. Individuals have roles to play in dealing with these challenges. Avoid waste, and instead reduce, reuse, and recycle. This can be done at a local level whenever feasible. Starting organic farming, as well, can-do wonders. Participate in wildlife-saving efforts because to help the wildlife is to preserve the environment that the wildlife lives in. Participate in local trash cleanups to protect the habitats of endangered animals and other wildlife in your area. Preserve energy, learn more about endangered species and their habitats.

Plant a tree, the birds will thank you By Cindy Golia
Our bird population has been plummeting over the last few decades to numbers that are alarming. The number of birds in the United States and Canada has declined by 3 billion over the past half century, that's about 29% from 1970. There is something you can do to help reverse the trend by planting the right kind of tree to help manage the birds. By planting trees you are providing a vertical habitat for visiting birds. Planting and maintaining trees of different heights at maturity will help birds because they will use different niches for feeding and nesting. When you landscape, try to provide the necessities that birds need to survive, mainly food, shelter, nesting spot and water (this may be harder in the winter).
Try to provide open space around feeders, this can help prevent the neighbor’s cat from preying on the birds. If you are trying to attract hummingbirds, provide a limb within 50 feet of the feeder, this provides a resting place and a lookout for danger and passing insects. If you are fortunate enough to have an area in your yard that you can leave "wild" by retaining dead trees, go for it; this would help attract woodpeckers and other cavity nesting birds. So, in summary, the more diverse your trees are the more different kinds of birds you will be able to attract. So go plant a tree or two!
natural food sources. Water: All animals need water to survive, and some need it for bathing or breeding as well. Cover: Wildlife need places to take shelter from bad weather and places to hide from predators or hunt for prey. Places to raise young: Wildlife need resources to reproduce, and to protect and nourish their young. Sustainable practices: Maintain your yard or garden in natural ways to ensure soil, air and water stay healthy and clean. Creating a wildlife habitat garden to attract birds, butterflies and other neighborhood wildlife is fun, rewarding and makes a big difference. It’s easier than you might think."
Here's what NWF has to say about what you need to have backyard habitat: "Food: Native plants provide food eaten by a variety of wildlife. Feeders can supplement

A celebration spanning centuries (The following information is taken from history.com) St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated annually on March 17, the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over 1,000 years. On St. Patrick’s Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Lenten prohibitions against the con-
sumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink and feast on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage.
Who was St. Patrick? Saint Patrick, who lived during the fifth century, is the patron saint of Ireland and its national apostle. Born in Roman Britain, he was kidnapped and brought to Ire-
land as a slave at the age of using the three leaves of a 16. He later escaped, but re- native Irish clover, the shamturned to Ireland and was rock. credited with bringing Christianity to its people. In the centuries following Patrick’s death (believed to have been on March 17, 461), the mythology surrounding his life became ever more ingrained in the Irish culture: Perhaps the most well-known legend of St. Patrick is that he explained the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit)
The first St. Patrick's Day
Since around the ninth or 10th century, people in Ireland have been observing the Roman Catholic feast day of St. Patrick on March 17. The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place not in Ireland but in America.
Records show that a St. Patrick’s Day parade was held on March 17, 1601 in a Spanish colony in what is now St. Augustine, Florida. The parade, and a St. Patrick’s Day celebration a year earlier were organized by the Spanish Colony's Irish vicar Ricardo Artur. More than a century later, homesick Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched in New York City See St. Patrick, A17

on March 17, 1772 to honor the Irish patron saint. Enthusiasm for the St. Patrick's Day parades in New York City, Boston and other early American cities only grew from there.
Growth of celebrations Over the next 35 years, Irish patriotism among American immigrants flourished, prompting the rise of socalled “Irish Aid” societies like the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick and the Hibernian Society. Each group would hold annual parades featuring bagpipes (which actually first became popular in the Scottish and British armies) and drums.
Today, that parade is the world's oldest civilian parade and the largest in the United States, with over 150,000 participants. Nearly 3 million people line the 1.5mile parade route to watch the procession, which takes more than five hours. Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia and Savannah also celebrate the day with parades involving between 10,000 and 20,000 participants each.

Suddenly, annual St. Patrick’s Day parades became a show of strength for Irish Americans, as well as a must-attend event for a slew of political candidates. In 1948, President Harry S. ica is home to the largest productions, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated around the world in locations far from Ireland, including Japan, Singapore and Russia. Popular St. Patrick’s Day recipes include Irish soda bread, corned beef and cabbage and champ. In the United States, people often wear green on St. Patrick’s Day. In modern-day Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day was traditionally been a religious occasion. In fact, up until the 1970s, Irish laws mandated that pubs be closed on March 17. Beginning in 1995, however, the Irish government began a national campaign to use interest in St. Patrick’s Day to drive tourism and showcase Ireland and Irish culture to the rest of the world.
What's with Leprechauns? One icon of the Irish holiday is the Leprechaun. The original Irish name for these figures of folklore is “lobaircin,” meaning “small-bodied fellow.” Belief in leprechauns probably stems from Celtic belief in fairies, tiny men and women who could use their magical powers to serve good or evil. In Celtic folktales, leprechauns were cranky souls, responsible for mending the shoes of the other fairies. Though only minor figures in Celtic folklore, leprechauns were known for their trickery, which they often used to protect their much-fabled treasure. Leprechauns have their own holiday on May 13, but are also celebrated on St. Patrick's, with many dressing up as the wily fairies.

On his first day in office, President Biden signed an executive order prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity in school sports and elsewhere. Dan Barrett, a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut, which represents the two transgender athletes in the lawsuit, said the Feb. 23 action represents “a hint that the government, the Department of Education, may now have a different view of Title IX.” CIAC executive director Glenn Lungarini has said the organization’s transgender policy was formed with federal and state guidance and that multiple courts and federal agencies, including the Justice Department had previously acknowledged that the term “sex” in Title IX is ambiguous. Connecticut Attorney General William Tong said he was pleased with the U.S. Justice Department’s decision to withdraw Barr’s statement. “Transgender girls are girls and every woman and girl deserves protection against discrimination. Delegation: $10 billion in federal aid coming to Connecticut By Susan Haigh Associated Press
Connecticut is on track to receive more than $10 billion in federal COVID-19 funding in the Democratic coronavirus relief legislation before Congress, including $4 billion worth of stimulus payments, members of the state’s all-Democratic House delegation said Tuesday. Eligible residents among an estimated 1.5 million Connecticut households are set to receive up to $1,400 in direct payments under the massive 628-page bill, which is now awaiting final approval in the House of Representatives. “That relief is going to be seen at the dinner table and assisting in terms of the dayto-day, ongoing efforts, on behalf of our citizens to make ends meet,” said U.S. Rep. John Larson, who represents the state’s 1st Congressional District. While much of the detailed language outlining the $1.9 trillion package still needs to be finalized, the federal lawmakers said Connecticut is set to receive funds for a variety of COVID-related needs. Those include expanded food assistance, rental and mortgage assis-
tance, statewide and community-based vaccination clinics and outreach, health insurance subsidies, school safety improvements, child care tax credits and an estimated $276 million in direct aid to financially struggling child care providers. Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, who represents the 3rd Congressional District, estimated that state and local governments in Connecticut will receive $4.2 billion under the legislation. The funding will be available for a host of needs, including public health, police and fire and public works. U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney, who represents the 2nd Congressional District, said the state’s budget office will be required to release the federal funds to eligible cities and towns within 30 days. “This money’s going to move and it’s going to move fast,” said Courtney, noting that communities need to cover multiple COVID-related costs, including manning vaccination clinics with police and town staff, and fire departments helping to manage crowd sizes. “They need this help to get them and their budgets through this time.”

Mass-vaccination site at Oakdale Theater ramps up
MOVE YOUR BUSINESS FORWARD
By Nick Sambides Jr. Record-Journal staff
WALLINGFORD — Standing in the sprawling lobby of the Toyota Oakdale Theater on Friday, March 5 Kelly Toth could smile and feel that she and the rest of the healthcare industry were finally beating back the deadly virus. Since opening on Monday, March 1 the Hartford Healthcare mass vaccination site — one of four new centers statewide — had seen 100 to 200 patients a day, with 502 expected by the end of a very long day last Friday. Three hundred and two patients were expected in during the day, with 200 educators coming in to a teachers-only clinic that night, said Toth, a nurse practitioner who manages Oakdale and another megavaccine site at Liberty Square in New Britain for Hartford Healthcare.

Between the outer door and snaking through a good portion of the right side of lobby, almost to the grand redcarpeted staircases that lead to the auditorium, was an array of retractable belt barriers, aisles for patients to stand in, and a much more formidable steel barricade bifurcating the room. To the left were small groups of two chairs each, much more than socially-distanced in the vast space, and beyond them all, closest to the staircase, was a row of five stations where the vaccines were administered.

The conversion from entertainment venue to mass vaccination site didn’t change the Oakdale much. Between the long sets of outer and inner doors outside the lobby stood a woman acting as receptionist and a security man dressed in what looked like Army fatigues, stern but polite.
“I understand that there's a large group of people out there that are eligible and it's very challenging to get appointments. So folks coming in that don't have appointments are emotional about it. Pandemic stress begins to ebb Sitting together after their first vaccinations, James and Regina Green of Berlin said the experience was pleasant enough, or at least untroubling, unlike the time leading up to it. They felt no side effects immediately after getting their shots, they said, although the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, which Oakdale is distributing, carries soreness at the site of the injection, mild fever, chills, headaches, fatigue and muscle aches with some patients, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The symptoms can last several days, and are more likely on the second dose administered, according to the FDA .
Mrs. Green rolled her eyes. "It's not that simple," she said.
Looking forward to more vaccine Toth manages about 55 people day-to-day at the Wallingford and New Britain vaccination sites. Administering vaccinations, she said, has been a stress reliever for her and the other medical personnel — very much welcomed after almost a year of dealing with the COVID-19, she said. Toth first began contending with the virus when she was
Her husband said he didn’t worry that much. “I’m an outdoors person,” said James Green, an avid golfer and retired heavy equipment operator for the state Department of Transportation.“I figure if I can get outdoors, I can do what I need to do and I will be all right.” Nobody should worry about taking the vaccine, he said.
Exactly when and how much more vaccine will come to the Oakdale is unknown. The Pfizer supply will vary from week-to-week for the foreseeable future. The Johnson and Johnson vaccine will be added to the supply at the theater, but only for a day, Toth said. But things will improve, and after a year of battling the virus, every day that vaccines go out is a day to cherish, she said.

“Being a bedside person, my entire career, I can tell you that for those of us that have really hit burnout and have gotten tired, this has just been a breath of fresh air,” Toth said. “It's breathed new life into each and every one of us and it's kind of rejuvenated the nursing force.” “You can see it in their eyes and on their faces,” she said. “It's a much more relaxed
