Spring hopes still remain eternal

With schools closed through May 20, CIAC will assess sports prospects on April 23

By Bryant Carpenter and Sean Krofssik Record-Journal staff

CHESHIRE — The window for spring sports is still open. It has, however, grown narrower.

Patricia Longobardi, owner of Sewing by Patricia in Wallingford, trims a coffee filter on April 8. The filter will be inserted into fabric masks she’s sewing for people in need, nurses in particular. Longobardi isn’t charging, but is asking for donations to give to the Wallingford Wishing Well. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now recommends wearing masks in public places to limit the spread of COVID-19.

The masks are an extra step — in addition to social distancing and washing hands. “Masks are not a substitute for social distancing,” said Lea Crown, Meriden health and human services director. “Everyone should

still aim to maintain the six foot distance from others, as well as practice other public health prevention efforts such as regular hand washing.”

With Gov. Ned Lamont announcing last week that Connecticut schools will remain closed through May 20 due to the coronavirus, the CIAC will reconvene on Thursday, April 23 to assess the status of the 2020 spring high school sports season. ”The announcement to extend school closings through May 20th provides a timeline for the CIAC to consider regarding spring sport opportunities,” the CIAC said in a statement released Thursday, April 16. “CIAC administrative staff will have more detailed conversations with superintendents, principals, athletic directors, member leagues, medical professionals, and coaches over the next week and half. The CIAC Board of Control will meet

Locals’ film earns SXSW award By Julie Rancourt Special to The Citizen

A short film co-directed by North Haven residents Ashley Brandon and Dennis Hohne won a special grand jury award from the prestigious South By Southwest (SXSW) film festival, held annually in Austin, Texas. The film, “Dia de la Madre,” premiered at the Sundance film festival in January and then was selected to be

shown at SXSW, which was cancelled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“We were incredibly surprised and honored to learn that ‘Dia de la Mardre’ received the award,” Brandon said. “Although we are saddened about the festival not taking place, we are super stoked about this nod.” The SXSW awards were announced on the festival’s website and by Variety magazine. Brandon, her partner

Hohne, and Nevo Shinaar, who produced the film, were notified by email about the award.

“We didn’t have an opportunity to share the film with an audience in Austin, but it still feels wonderful to know the jury was able to watch and enjoy the film. To be included in the SXSW lineup after our successful premiere at Sundance was already amazing, now this is just the Ashley Brandon, Quinnipiac University assistant professor See Award, A2

Masks From A1

Cloth masks were recommended for general public use, as medical masks are in short supply and should be reserved for healthcare workers and first responders, the CDC said.

“Masks help as they reduce the droplets becoming airborne of the person wearing the mask, especially those who may cough or sneeze,” said Shane Lockwood, director of public health with the Plainville-Southington Regional Health District. The health district also covers Middlefield. The CDC has provided instructions for how to make different types of masks, including no-sew ones which only require cloth and rubber bands or hair ties. Crown said when making her own masks, rubber bands worked much better. She said the masks need to be routinely washed based on use. An effective cloth mask should fit snug but comfortably against the side of the face, be secured with ties or ear loops, include multiple layers of fabric, allow for breathing without restric-

tion, and be able to be laundered, according to the CDC. A mask can be made from cutting a strip of fabric from a T-shirt, or using a bandana or otherwise square 20 inch by 20 inch cotton cloth. A coffee filter can be used inside. The masks should be used in any area where social distancing is hard to maintain, like grocery stores and pharmacies, especially in areas with community-based transmission, the CDC says. “I also continue to urge people to only go to stores for essential items. This is not the time to browse or go to the store because you may be bored at home. If you don’t absolutely need the item, don’t go to the store,” Lockwood said.

Community support Some local residents and businesses have stepped up to help sew masks for others. In Wallingford, Patricia Longobardi is trying to get fabric masks to people in need, nurses in particular, many who are using the fabric masks as an extra layer over medical ones. Stay alert to mental health That’s to be expected when a pandemic is exploding around us, with cases of the

But there’s another health

issue that requires attention. As the response to the COVID-19 crisis has stretched on, many have responded that we are “all in this together.” That is most definitely true. When the history of this moment is written, it will be the actions of communities, of neighbors and neighborhoods, that will be remembered as one of the true bright spots in an otherwise dark time. Yet, our “together” is uniquely separate. In order to kill a virus that is at once killing citizens and ravaging an economy, we must keep our distance from one another. This war is being won from the inside of our homes, and our strategy for victory is to keep away from each other until it’s safe to reconnect in person. That means a lot of people in isolation. That means a lot of worry about mental health. For those who suffer from everything from addiction to anxiety, the last few weeks, and the promise of more to come over the next several,

presents a clear threat. Such isolation can create all the types of triggers that can lead to relapse or the onset of depression. And while interactions are possible now, via technology, that would have been unavailable had such a pandemic hit, say, 30 or 40 years ago, a lack of personal connection can still lead to problems.

But even for those who do not normally suffer from mental health issues, this difficult period can impact people in unwanted and negative ways. With so much uncertainty surrounding our current moment, none could be blamed for being more pessimistic than usual.

That simple act of driving by a student’s home had a profound impact during an unusually complex time. It should serve as a blueprint for the rest of us — that activities such as phone calls or conversations with neighbors, while practicing social distancing of course, can be imbued with new meaning. And it can go a long way to keeping one feeling happy and normal.

That’s why caring for oneself is important during this time. Make sure you continue to do things that you enjoy. Stay active. Connect with friends and family. Even if it’s not the same as a backyard barbecue or a happy hour with co-workers, it can still offer a respite from all that is occurring. Last week, teachers from Highland School in Cheshire held their own personal “pa-

COMMENTARY

Money Matters: Market volatility and retirement certainty like we’re experiencing today. By Jeff Jolly

Retirement is an important milestone that often comes after years (or decades) of careful planning. But even the most seasoned planners couldn’t have foreseen the severe market selloff that happened in March in reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic. The abrupt end to the 10-year bull market surprised investors of all ages who are now wondering how long it will take for their portfolios to recover. Unlike younger workers with many years ahead of earning and saving, investors who are retired or nearing retirement have less time to wait out their losses. But there are still actions they can take to help secure their finances, even during periods of un-

If this situation applies to you, here are a few steps to consider in this new environment : If you are approaching retirement :

Pick your retirement date If you haven’t already, take time now to decide the year and month when you (and potentially your spouse or partner) want to retire. Given the current environment, you may want to consider extending your time in the workforce – whether it’s continuing your current career or moving into a new full- or part-time role. Either way, your answer can have a big impact on your investment decisions from this point forward.

Ensure your investments are diversified.

Balance your need for protection with growth

Not all sectors of the economy are alike, and they react to news and events differently. For those nearing retirement, the recent spike in volatility is a reminder of how having a broadly diversified portfolio can help reduce your investing risk.

Protecting your portfolio from market downturns becomes more important as you approach the day when you start living off your savings. During this time, you may want to consider investing the money you plan to use for income in the first few years of retirement more conservatively in liquid vehicles that are easy to access. This can help give you peace of mind that you are prepared to handle upcoming expenses no matter what’s happening in the markets.

Instead of simply selling your stocks in attempt to cut your losses, review your portfolio to see if it is properly balanced between stocks, bonds and cash that align with your goals, time horizon and your ability to manage risk. While a diversi- If you are currently in retirement : fied portfolio can’t guarantee profits or protect against Review your all losses, it can greatly reduce the impact of volatility. withdrawal strategy

Don’t take unnecessary chances in your stock exposure For the long-term investor – which may include you as a retiree – volatility in equities can work in your favor. It’s possible that you will spend one to three decades in retirement, giving you time to withstand some market moves. At the same time, it’s important to preserve your base of savings and not be overexposed to stock risk. Now is a good time to review your exposure in the context of your full financial plan to evaluate if you are taking the right amount of risk. Additionally, focus your equity portfolio on higher quality stocks – primarily blue-chip companies that tend to demonstrate more stable See Jolly, A17

If the recent decrease in the value of your portfolio makes you nervous, revisit the amount of money you withdraw monthly to meet your expenses. As you review, the goal is to be assured that the amount you withdraw to meet the next year or two of expenses does

not put your long-term financial security in jeopardy. If your base of assets is reduced, you may have to trim your withdrawal amount to assure you have a sustainable long-term income strategy.

Governors promise to cautiously ease COVID-19 restrictions The Democratic governors of a half dozen northeastern states outlined a regional approach Monday to devising a plan for the careful easing of COVID-19 restrictions, warning that changes will come slowly and be guided by public-health experts, not politicians or business interests. On a conference call hosted by New York Gov. Andrew

Cuomo, the governors of Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island reinforced the notion that the decision to reopen their states is one for governors, not the federal government or President Donald J. Trump. Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker, a Republican, later joined the regional planning effort.

“This is about being smart,” Cuomo said. “Not political, but smart.” The governors said the states will be cognizant of any guidance put forward by federal authorities. But as Gov. Tom Wolf of Pennsylvania noted, the closing orders came from state capitals, not Washington. — The Connecticut Mirror
