CHESHIRE — The window for spring sports is still open. It has, however, grown narrower.

Patricia Longobardi, owner of Sewing by Patricia in Wallingford, trims a coffee filter on April 8. The filter will be inserted into fabric masks she’s sewing for people in need, nurses in particular. Longobardi isn’t charging, but is asking for donations to give to the Wallingford Wishing Well. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now recommends wearing masks in public places to limit the spread of COVID-19.

The masks are an extra step — in addition to social distancing and washing hands. “Masks are not a substitute for social distancing,” said Lea Crown, Meriden health and human services director. “Everyone should

still aim to maintain the six foot distance from others, as well as practice other public health prevention efforts such as regular hand washing.”

With Gov. Ned Lamont announcing last week that Connecticut schools will remain closed through May 20 due to the coronavirus, the CIAC will reconvene on Thursday, April 23 to assess the status of the 2020 spring high school sports season. ”The announcement to extend school closings through May 20th provides a timeline for the CIAC to consider regarding spring sport opportunities,” the CIAC said in a statement released Thursday, April 16. “CIAC administrative staff will have more detailed conversations with superintendents, principals, athletic directors, member leagues, medical professionals, and coaches over the next week and half. The CIAC Board of Control will meet

Locals’ film earns SXSW award By Julie Rancourt Special to The Citizen

A short film co-directed by North Haven residents Ashley Brandon and Dennis Hohne won a special grand jury award from the prestigious South By Southwest (SXSW) film festival, held annually in Austin, Texas. The film, “Dia de la Madre,” premiered at the Sundance film festival in January and then was selected to be

shown at SXSW, which was cancelled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“We were incredibly surprised and honored to learn that ‘Dia de la Mardre’ received the award,” Brandon said. “Although we are saddened about the festival not taking place, we are super stoked about this nod.” The SXSW awards were announced on the festival’s website and by Variety magazine. Brandon, her partner

Hohne, and Nevo Shinaar, who produced the film, were notified by email about the award.

“We didn’t have an opportunity to share the film with an audience in Austin, but it still feels wonderful to know the jury was able to watch and enjoy the film. To be included in the SXSW lineup after our successful premiere at Sundance was already amazing, now this is just the Ashley Brandon, Quinnipiac University assistant professor See Award, A2
