ELECTION 2022 / 34TH SENATE DISTRICT

Cicarella looks to maintain senate seat By Nicole Zappone The Citizen

State Sen. Paul Cicarella has announced his intention to run for a second term. The Republican lawmaker represents the 34th District, which includes Durham, East Haven, North Haven, Wallingford and North Branford.

“It’s been my privilege to be a voice for all residents of the 34th District in Hartford," Cicarella stated. “Entering my first term as a state senator, my goal was to listen to and learn from families in our district so that I can take that message to Hartford." Cicarella said he has spoken with thousands of his con-

stituents over the past two years, and there message is clear. “They want a safe community, opportunities for well-paying jobs and a state that’s affordable," the senator said. "To that end, I have only just begun the work to fight for these values at the Capitol through commonsense legislation."

“The response to our message continues to be positive and I am always proud to see the emails, texts, and social media messages of support throughout my first campaign season and now during my first term at the Capitol,” said Cicarella. Sen. Paul See Cicarella, A2 Cicarella

North Haven’s Mya Xeller crowned Miss Teen CT By Nicole Zappone The Citizen

A young woman from North Haven was crowned Miss Connecticut Teen USA on Sunday, April 10. Mya Xeller, 17, said she was in shock after winning the title — the happiest moment of her life. “I have been in pageants since I was 11 and to win the crown the first time participating in Miss Connecticut Teen USA was something amazing,” said Xeller. a seMiss CT Teen USA nior at North Haven High Mya Xeller at the RecordSchool. Journal office in Meriden. Xeller now moves on to the national competition for Miss Teen USA. Over the course of the next year, Xeller and Miss Connecticut USA Cynthia Dias will make several appearances throughout the state.

Dick’s Sporting Goods on Universal Drive donated bags full of sports items to the North Haven Police Department to be handed out to youngsters in town during basic interactions with officers, or to ease stressful situations children may find themselves in. Dick’s came through with Wiffle ball equipment, Frisbees, soccer balls, and more. “Strong work!,” the NHPD stated on Facebook.

Xeller isn’t planning to attend college in the fall. Instead, she wants to take a year to explore opportunities before deciding on her next step. Barbara Ewald, executive state director for Miss Connecticut USA and Teen USA,

said she’s looking forward to watching Xeller grow into her new role. “I am also excited to help her prepare for Miss Teen USA,” Ewald said. Away from the limelight, Mya Xeller is vice president of More Than Likes, a local non-profit started by her cousin Alex Ranciato. More Than Likes focuses on getting teenagers away from technology and out into the community, where they can do alot of good. See Xeller, A2

SCSU students sifting through Native American items The North Haven Historical Society is pleased to announce that its large collection of Quinnipiac artifacts is being sorted, identified, and catalogued. Thanks to a partnership with Professor William Farley of Southern Connecticut State University and an operating support grant received from Connecticut Humanities, the

historical society will be able to showcase this collection and provide meaningful information about the items in it. The Quinnipiac People were North Haven’s first inhabitants, and remnants of their lives have been found for centuries along the riverbanks that meander through town. The historical society has long been a

repository of these artifacts, but little is known about the items. However, under the guidance of Professor Farley SCSU archaeology students have begun the task of curating the historical finds. Thanks to the funding provided by the state, and private donations, the North Haven Historical Society will be able to purchase archival-quality

supplies to store the collection, build a permanent exhibit, and provide small stipends for the SCSU students curating the artifacts. The historical society is grateful for this opportunity to partner with experts who can provide a real understanding of what the collection tells us about the Quinnipiac People. — Press Release

Emotions on display at military monument dedication By Nicole Zappone The Citizen

BERLIN – Area residents, government officials, and Gold Star families gathered at Veterans Memorial Park Saturday for the dedication of the Connecticut Gold Star Families Memorial Monument. The monument, which broke ground on May 22, 2021, honors military families and the legacy of their loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the armed forces. One side of the black granite monument bears the words, “Gold Star Families Memorial Monument, a tribute to Gold Star Families and Relatives who sacrificed Loved Ones for our Freedom.” The other features four panels: Homeland, Family, Patriot, and Sacrifice. At the center of this tribute is a cut out, which represents lost loved ones.

Letters to the Editor Attend this PZC meeting Editor : North Haven residents, please attend the Planning and Zoning Commission meeting Monday, May 2 at 7 p.m. and voice opposition to a Medical Cannabis Dispensary Regulation which allows these businesses to operate in commercial zones near neighborhoods. The PZC meeting will take place at the library and via Zoom. THC in cannabis negatively impacts the brain's executive functions, including the ability to make decisions, remember important data, plan, organize and solve problems, as well as control emotions and behaviors. And states that have legalized medical and recreational marijuana have seen an increase in Cannabis Use Disorder and in vaping weed use. The Planning and Zoning Commission ignored the public’s health, safety, and welfare! Soon, anyone who needs or wants cannabis can have it delivered to their front door.

Local manufacturing outfits form partnership The New Haven region’s manufacturing companies have joined together to launch the South-Central Connecticut Manufacturing Industry Partnership. The collective’s focus is manufacturing because of the density of small- to medium-sized organizations in the region.

The South-Central manufacturing partnership is an industry-led group formed from the Governor’s Workforce Council that follows the NextGen Regional Sector Partnerships model. This initiative, in partnership with the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce, Middlesex

Community College, and Workforce Alliance, helps bring awareness to the resources and workforce available for manufacturing companies. With over 25 manufacturing leaders actively engaged in the process, three areas of focus for the industry were identified: building a sustainable pipeline of talent,

promoting the manufacturing industry, and addressing cost competitiveness. Industry action teams are currently working to address the key areas. In addition to the work being done by the South-Central manufacturing partnership, the Quinnipiac Chamber of Commerce will

Our library is raising money to host a community mural as part of Wallingford’s 350th anniversary. The mural will be a collaborative project celebrating the people who live in our town. Local artist Rashmi Talpade painted a giant tree in the library and will help residents create decorative “leaves” with images of themselves and their families. Most images will be photographs, but self-portraits in other mediums will also be welcome. As the leaf-shaped images are created, community participants will see them affixed to the tree and watch the development of the mural, akin to a tree sprouting leaves. We are seeking $5,000 to cover the costs. The Wallingford Public Library is excited to showcase this beautiful, visual reflection of the people who make up our community.

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS

The Wallingford Chorus was founded in 1970 to celebrate the Town of Wallingford’s Tercentenary. For over fifty years, the chorus has continuously performed and promoted choral music in central CT. It’s our way of raising spirits and inspiring new thoughts, giving our audience a chance to lose themselves in music as a break from everyday life. We perform two concerts a year, one in December and one in May. Our material varies from singing light repertoires to more complex pieces including selections of multicultural works. Most recently, however, we have performed songs from Broadway, the cinema, and the 60’s. We are a fun group! We want our audiences to have fun with us. Do not be surprised if you come to one of our concerts and you are asked to sing along! Your donation to the great give will go directly to paying our amazing Music Director and Accompanist, and allowing us to purchase new and exciting music to perform for you.
