Wallingford Democrat runs for Fasano’s seat again By Lauren Takores Record-Journal staff

A Democratic candidate has thrown her hat into the ring for the state Senate seat to be vacated by Len Fasano. Fasano, the North Haven Republican who leads his party’s Senate caucus, announced in April that he would not be seeking a tenth term representing the 34th District of East Haven, North Haven, Durham and Wallingford.

Justin Weekes, Special to The Citizen

Keen filed her paperwork establishing her intent to run in January. In 2018, McKeen unsucMcKeen cessfully challenged Fasano in her first run for legislative office, winning 41.5 percent of the vote. Fasano had not been challenged for the seat since 2012.

McKeen From A1

McKeen, a member of Wallingford's Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Commission, said she expected it would take more than one attempt to win the seat. “It’s a lot of work and we reached out to a lot of people, but there really wasn’t enough time to reach all the voters I wanted to reach,” McKeen said. The 2018 Democratic primary was held in mid-August, leaving less than three months before the general election. Still, she and her team were able to knock on approximately 17,000 to

18,000 doors, she said. Paul Cicarella Jr., vice chairman of the North Haven Republican Town Committee, announced in April that he is seeking the Republican nomination in the 34th District seat. McKeen feels the race has become easier without a long-standing incumbent, adding that she spoke with many voters last time around who agreed with her positions—investing in small business, equitable education, environmental protection, affordable health care—but still supported Fasano. The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has affected her plans for campaigning and

voter outreach but not her platform, she said. McKeen is a personal property specialist for a public adjuster. She’s a Lyman Hall High School graduate and has studied at Southern Connecticut State University. She’s married to Bruce Conroy, who ran for a seat on the Wallingford Board of Education last year, and has two daughters, one of whom, Erin Conroy, is an EMT for a private ambulance company. The state Democratic nominating convention is scheduled for May 19.

Sewer issues The Town of North Haven is asking residents to avoid flushing disposable hand wipes and other inappropriate items (disposable gloves, towels, etc.) into the town’s sewer lines and sanitary sewer system as people practice sanitation guidelines to combat the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Veolia North America, which operates and maintains the town’s wastewater treatment plant, has noticed a significant increase in backups and blockages in the sanitary sewer system and collection network, which can pose a risk to the wastewater management system and require costly repairs, both for homeowners and the town.

Bulk pick-up The curbside bulk pick-up scheduled for April was postponed due to concerns related to COVID-19. The new dates for the collection program will be the last two full weeks in June: June 15 through June 26. Residents can place items at the curb by 5 a.m. on their designated trash collection day.

The essay topic is "Challenges In Preserving Our Natural Habitats." The contest is open to students in grades 912. Essay must be 600-700 words.

North Haven Democrats select leaders

The North Haven Democratic Town Committee members held a meeting in March to elect officers for the 2020-2022 term. The election was held via Zoom video conference call due to Governor Ned Lamont’s executive order that there be no gatherings of more than five people due to the COVID-19 crisis. Kathy Grant was unanimously re-elected as leader

of the town’s Democratic Party. This is Grant’s second term as chair. Previously, she served as DTC secretary for two-and-a-half terms and also as interim vice chair. Jennifer Caldwell was also unanimously elected to her second term as DTC vice chair. New to the Executive Board of Officers are Maureen Cunningham, DTC secre-

tary; Kerry Mattie, treasurer; and Ken Quick, Deputy Treasurer. All candidates were voted in unanimously.

CIAC

of sports into July would span two budget cycles and get complicated.

From A2

So, if schools do reopen this spring and there is sports season, it will be limited to June.

the CIAC is freeing up competition time for as many teams and athletes as possible, rather than giving the lion’s share to the elite few who advance through the tournament brackets.

To help get the ball rolling, the CIAC is bending its mandatory practice rule. Athletes must still practice at least 10 days before competing, but five of those days can be fulfilled at home. The other five must be done with a coach.

For that matter, there would also be no body of regularseason work to set up those tournaments. “There was no feasibility, from our perspective, to holding statewide events,” said Joel Cookson, the CIAC’s Director of Media & Sports Information. “This allows, if there is competition and it’s deemed safe, teams to play some of their local rivals and to get in those experiences in the time frame that ends up being allowed.” In keeping the spring sports window open, Connecticut is in the minority nationwide — ironic given that the CIAC was among the first to pull the plug on the winter postseason

Platt High School AD Rich Katz, for one, says easing the 10-day rule isn’t necessarily in the best interest of certain athletes.

Last Thursday’s announcement by the CIAC keeps alive the possibility that Maloney’s Owen Papciak and other area athletes will see some kind of spring season in June. State tournaments hae been cancelled, but only as a means of freeing up more time for schools to schedule events. Record-Journal file photo

as the severity of the pandemic became apparent in midMarch. As of Wednesday, April 22 36 states had cancelled the spring sports sea-

Connecticut schools, per Lamont’s order, will remain closed until at least May 20. Ultimately, Lamont and the state Department of Education will decide the fate of the Connecticut school year beyond that date, and thus the spring season. If schools do not reopen, there will be no scholastic sports in June. Some coaches have been wondering if games could be played even if school buildings don’t reopen. After all, they reason, school is in session via distance learning. That possibility, says the CIAC, is not on the table.

“Part and parcel with reopening schools is reopening the facilities themselves,” said Cookson. “If the schools are closed and the kids aren’t permitted back, we’ve been given the indication the schools are not going to be comfortable allowing competition on their facilities.” Another proposal that met with resistance from CIAC member schools was extending a spring season into July. School financial years run July 1-June 30, so any extension

“Take that baseball pitcher,” said Katz, whose son Jeff was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 2004 after pitching at Cheshire High School. “They need the 10 days of supervised throwing before they jump into any kind of an organized game. What they will be doing is losing their preseason throwing against hitters. Adrenaline comes out when you throw against another team. That’s important in conditioning. “It may be a bit different for other people, but even track and field, when you actually get into that race and the adrenaline goes through your body, different things happen,” Katz added. “You really need to build up gradually. But I especially look at that baseball pitcher, knowing my son was one. You need that adrenaline to pump up in each of your outings before you extend yourself because that body feels totally different after a game situation than it does in practice.” In the big picture, though, Katz supports the CIAC’s stance and agrees the chance of some kind of season is better than none at all. The CIAC’s Board of Control will meet again on May 7. In the meantime, individual leagues and conferences will start discussing how to conduct a potential June season. The scheduling would be left to them.

Money Matters: Market volatility and retirement By Jeff Jolly

Retirement is an important milestone that often comes after years (or decades) of careful planning. But even the most seasoned planners couldn’t have foreseen the severe market selloff that happened in March in reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic. The abrupt end to the 10-year bull market surprised investors of all ages who are now wondering how long it will take for their portfolios to recover. Unlike younger workers with many years ahead of earning and saving,

investors who are retired or nearing retirement have less time to wait out their losses. But there are still actions they can take to help secure their finances, even during periods of uncertainty like we’re experiencing today.

your time in the workforce – whether it’s continuing your current career or moving into a new full- or part-time role. Either way, your answer can have a big impact on your investment decisions from this point forward.

pandemic heightens those uncertainties. The Ulbrich Boys & Girls Clubs’ commitment to not only the youth we serve but our community as a whole only gets stronger in times of crisis. We recognized that this pandemic was going to have devastating effects throughout our area and that we as local leaders were uniquely positioned to do all we could to help. It’s why we immediately began providing a Virtual Club Experience for all of our sites. We reached out personally to our members to comfort them and let them know how much we care. We worked with our local schools to make sure our kids remained focused on academics and healthy activities. But that resolve can only get us so far as we face lost revenue and financial instability as demand for our services increases. And we’re not the only nonprofit facing a financial quandary of how we can continue to provide

critical services and aid to youth and our community while also keeping staff compensated, and preparing for Summer Camp. I can’t stress enough the dire support nonprofits such as ours need if we are to not only continue to serve our community but help our nation recover once this is over. It’s not just how we respond to a crisis, it’s how we rebuild following it. It’s because of this that I must express my extreme gratitude on behalf of my Club staff, the youth and parents we serve as well as the community we call home, to our elected representative in Congress for passing much-needed supports for food insecurity, child care and educational programs for those struggling in the midst of this crisis. I can’t even put into words the difference aid will make in the lives of those who have lost their jobs as well as struggling small businesses and community servSee Collazo, A12
