A photograph by North Haven High School student Zoey LoPresti will be on display in the U.S. Capitol for the next year.

More than 160 doubles teams filled up the 12 divisions as the Wint Filipek Sr. Memorial Tennis Tournament resumed on a reduced format after a three-year hiatus. The event began Saturday and concluded Thursday at North Haven’s Ridge Top Club, the tournament’s new home.

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors the Artistic Discovery competition, a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent. Each congressional district hosts an individual competition, with the first-place artwork hanging in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol for one year.

Wint Filipek Jr. stopped running the tournament shortly after his wife Margaret’s Alzheimer's diagnosis in 2018. Now, with a caregiver in the picture for his wife, and at the urging of his son Michael, Filipek resurrected the tournament.

“It will be good to see so many familiar faces,” Filipek said last week. “So many people wanted to support the tournament on behalf of my wife Margaret, and that’s really nice.” The champion of each division received a plaque. Filipek estimated potentially more than $20,000 would be raised from this year’s event for the Connecticut Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.

Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.
