Graduates persevered By Nicole Zappone The Citizen

"Dear Class of 2022, you have done it. You have crested the last hill of your North Haven Public Schools experience," North Haven High School Principal Russell Dallai told the 262 graduates gathered at commencement Friday, June 17 on the NHHS campus. "Your 12-year journey for a high school diploma is complete." Valedictorian Hannah Auddino told her fellow graduates she was honored to stand before them on this special day. See Graduation, A11

Helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities is something North Haven High School Class of 2022 valedictorian Hannah Auddino is passionate about. That's why the Duke University-bound scholar plans to study neuroscience and global health in college. “I’d like to become a developmental-behavioral pediatrician,” Auddino said.

Watching your investments take a tumble in the stock market generally isn’t a fun experience. But seasoned investors know that market volatility – and the inherent ups and downs that come with it – is a natural part of the process, and that historical trends show that market swings even out over time. In the right conditions, a market drop can even present opportunities, such as with tax loss harvesting. If this concept intrigues you – particularly in light of recent stock index declines –here’s what you should know:

Tax-saving strategy The tax loss harvesting strategy applies specifically to in-

vestments held in taxable accounts. Since current taxes aren’t applied to IRAs or workplace retirement plans, this strategy is not applicable in those accounts. The tax benefit of selling a security in a loss position is that those losses could potentially reduce your tax liability. Suppose you invested $10,000 to buy 1,000 shares of a stock for $10 per share more than a year ago. Today, if the stock’s value dropped to $8 per share, your initial investment is now valued at $8,000. The stock may recover. But if you sell it today, you could claim a $2,000 long-term capital loss. Is that the right choice?

The upside of tax-loss selling One deciding factor is whether you have capital gains that can be offset by the losses you incur from selling

securities in a negative position. Long-term capital gains which relate to assets you’ve held for more than a year are taxed at rates of 0, 15 or 20 percent based on your federal taxable income. If you had a $3,000 long-term capital gain to claim on your 2022 tax return, that would come with a federal income tax bill of $450 if your long-term capital gain is taxed at the 15 percent rate. If, at the same time, you lock in a $3,000 long-term capital loss on a different investment, it will offset that gain and eliminate the tax liability with respect to that capital gain. Likewise, if you own mutual funds in a taxable account, they may pay out capital gains distributions this year, even if they are not performing well at the present time. Those gains too can be offset by capital losses you claim. Note that you may not need See Jolly, A15

Auddino also was a member of Future Problem Solvers, and the NHHS band, Key Club and volleyball team. Like Auddino, Class of 2022 salutatorian Kyle Guo also got the most out of his time at NHHS. Guo ran cross country, and was a member of the student council, Diversity Club and Future Business Leaders Club. He also served as class secretary. “Being able to be a class officer and just interact with the students was amazing,” said Guo, who will further his education at Yale University. “High school has always been about the extracurriculars for me." Away from school, Guo spent a lot of time at his family's restaurant, which sparked his interest in economics. And that's what he plans to study in college. When it comes to moving on to an Ivy League school, Guo said, “It’s exciting, but a bit intimidating too."

Graduation From A1

Auddino talked about how the pandemic changed their schooling and how they adapted to the challenges. "It speaks to our versatility. And the skills we gained from our experience will prove useful as we progress to all of our future endeavors," said Auddino, who will attend Duke University in the fall. The Class of 2022's top student said "[A]fter witnessing how my classmates handled what was thrown at them, I can surely attest to the popular statement of this class being above average." Following Auddino's speech classmate Ana Marcano Diaz addressed the gathering, and Darren Jones followed with a graduation rap, which included the lines: "Now we had to start to learn to manage our time And then the virus hit, send us all for a ride Upstream into chaos to the east coast tide We were stuck in our rooms, taking classes online But that’s the honest truth And it gets a little better as each day is new Even though it wasn’t all 'High School Musical' I can depend on the crew, and that's you, Class of 2022." It was a beautiful, sunny day, and although it was breezy, none of the students lost their graduation caps. Some nearly lost their sashes, but they were quickly recovered before the wind could sweep them away. cells. Depending on the severity of the stroke, symptoms may resolve over time, but could cause long-term disability or even death.

It’s estimated that someone has a stroke in the United States every 40 seconds. Knowing the symptoms and risk factors can possibly help save someone’s life.

When someone is having a stroke, every second counts and you want to make sure you call 911 or seek medical care immediately. or want to offset capital gains if your taxable income in 2022, including the gains, is $41,675 or less for single tax filers or a married taxpayer filing separately, or $83,350 or less for a married couple filing a joint return. Taxpayers with total taxable income and gains below those income thresholds qualify for a 0 percent tax rate on long-term capital gains. Singles and married couples filing a joint return can use up to $3,000 of net capital losses to offset ordinary income ($1,500 for a married, filing separately, tax filer). Beyond that, unused losses can be carried forward to offset potential taxable capital gains in future tax years.

Cautions about tax loss selling The downside to selling a position that has suffered a loss is that you can’t purchase that specific security or one that is “substantially identical” to it 30 days before or after the sale at a

loss without the possibility of running afoul of the wash sale rules and deferring the loss. Choosing to sell also means you sacrifice the potential to benefit from a rebound in the price of the security while you are out of the position. You want to be certain that you are comfortable not owning a specific security for a period of time that could be a candidate for tax loss harvesting. Most of all, any buy-or-sell decisions you make regarding your portfolio need to go beyond just the tax consequences. Talk to your financial advisor about how tax loss harvesting opportunities fit into your overall financial plan. Be sure to consult with your tax advisor as well.

In addition to symptoms, people should pay close attention to risk factors. Some of the risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, radiation treatment and diabetes. It’s estimated that roughly 80 percent of strokes are preventable, which is a substantial number. Anyone who falls into a high-risk category should see their doctor to try to get some of their medical issues under control. About a third of strokes come from the carotid arteries, which are the blood vessels that run from your heart, up through your neck and carry blood to your brain. The narrowing of these blood vessels in the neck due to the buildup of plaque is called carotid stenosis. This condition causes clots to go into the brain and eventually cause a stroke. As a vascular surgeon, this is one of several areas of the body we can go into and try to minimize the potential for a stroke or prevent someone from having another stroke. Traditionally, the method used for this would include making an incision in the neck, opening the blood vessel and removing plaque. However, over the last few years we’ve made advancements with this procedure. Now, we make a small incision in the base of the neck and put a stent, which is a small metal coil, directly into the artery to open it up. This greatly reduces the chance of having a stroke and is a much better alternative for our high-risk patients. The procedure also uses reverse flow technology so as we are putting the stent in, any build up or debris in the artery is simultaneously removed. We’ve seen great results in our patients with this procedure and it’s helped improve quality of life.
