Town receives $4M state grant

Press Release

On June 22, Gov. Ned Lamont announced that he approved the release of approximately $23.8 million in state funding to remediate 480 acres of land across 22 properties in 15 towns and cities and put them back into productive use.

North Haven received a $4 million grant to remediate impacted soils on a 92acre parcel located at 250 Universal Drive to support the construction of a waste reclamation facility and a carbon negative power plant.

The state funds are being released through the Con-

MONEY MATTERS: Combining finances with your partner

necticut Department of Economic and Community Development’s Brownfield Remediation and Development Program.

“It makes no sense to have old, polluted, blighted properties sitting vacant for decades when we could be using this land to grow new businesses and create new housing,” Lamont said. “This state program enables us to partner with municipalities and developers to bring these lifeless properties back from the dead.”

The selected projects are expected to create approximately 915 jobs and 811 units of housing, including 223 affordable units.

If you’re in a long-term, committed relationship you may contemplate combining finances with your partner. Maybe you’re getting married, moving in together – or both. Or perhaps you already share expenses like rent, groceries and utility bills, and life would be easier if you pooled your money together to cover such expenses. Whatever the situation, combining finances comes with many considerations and complexities. As with most things related to money, it helps to have a plan. Here are a few pointers to keep in mind:

Communicate early, often. When it comes to relationships, you’ve probably heard the advice that communication is key. This adage holds

true when combining finances, as well. In addition to sharing information about your cash, investments and other assets, be transparent about any existing debt you and your partner hold –whether from college loans, credit cards or other liabilities. You owe it to each other to be upfront about the mix of assets and obligations you’re bringing into the relationship.

Next, discuss your spending habits, goals and feelings about your current financial situation and aspirations for the future. Even if you and your partner agree on most things, you may find that you have clashing views on money, particularly if one partner earns more money than the other, or if your upbringings were markedly different. Getting all of this out in the open early can help you manage your differences and work better as a team.

Choose your insurance coverage. Insurance policies can provide a layer of protection over your finances and may help you feel more confident about your ability to handle

unexpected events. Make it a priority to review your individual life, disability, health, car and home insurance policies before deciding what coverage you would like as a couple. If either of you receive benefits through an employer, pay attention to the qualifying events and dates for when you can change your elections. Update your beneficiaries and will. Thinking about what happens if one of you passes away may not be romantic, but it is an important step to protecting your loved ones financially. Discuss with your partner how you’d like assets to be divided and consider formalizing your wishes in a will. Also, update beneficiaries on your financial accounts (e.g., checking, savings, retirement) and assets, if necessary. This is especially important if you were previously married and have your former spouse listed as a beneficiary. In the same vein, if you want your partner to share ownership in any vehicle or property you own, update the titles accordingly.

$5M allocated for BHcare project

Press Release

HARTFORD Last week, House Minority Leader Vincent Candelora and Sen. Christine Cohen led praise from state lawmakers applauding an expected $5 million allocation from the State Bond Commission to help BHcare, Inc. centralize many of its services for adults and children under one roof at a new facility in North Branford.

Headquartered in North Haven, for more than 40 years, BHcare has been designated by the state’s Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services as the local mental health authority for six shoreline towns – Branford, North Branford, East Haven, Guilford, Madison and North Haven.

BHcare is also designated by DHMAS as a Regional Behavioral Health Action Organization for 36 municipalities. Additionally, it’s the domestic violence services provider for 19 cities and towns in the greater New Haven area. BHcare also provides services in the lower Naugatuck valley.

The $5 million allocation included on the agenda for the June 30 Bond Commission meeting will go toward con-

struction of a 48,000 square foot build along Route 139 in North Branford a project that will allow BHcare to centralize, and even grow, services that today are spread across several locations.

BHcare will occupy roughly half of the space in the new building, and it’s expected that the remaining square footage will be rented to entities that complement BHcare’s services. The entire project is expected to cost $8 million, with BHcare and a private developer investing $3 million combined.

“This is great news for BHcare, which offers a spectrum of critical services that produce positive outcomes for both adults and children, and I’m appreciative of the investment Gov. Lamont and members of the Bond Commission are making in this shovel-ready project,” said Candelora, whose 86th District includes North Branford as well as sections of Durham, Guilford and East Haven.

Cohen represents the 12th District, which includes the communities of Branford, Durham, East Haven, Guilford, Killingworth, Madison, Middlefield, North Branford and Rockfall.

“They encouraged me and have been helpful throughout the whole process,” Beltran said. “My daughter helps out on Sundays, and it’s nice.”

Crazy Toast House Restaurant opened in February.

Prior to living in Wallingford, Beltran lived on Long Island where he owned a bagel shop. The establishment opened in 2017, but closed in 2022 when Beltran and his family moved. “We wanted a change of pace and environment,” he said.

Beltran prides himself on offering a variety of options, like pancakes, burritos, wraps, gyro, fries, and more. For a sweet treat, the establishment offers milkshakes and ice cream. “We want to have it all,” he said. “So far customers have been enjoying the food.”

In the future, Beltran hopes to incorporate some Honduran dishes, as he is from

El Progreso, Yoro, Honduras. He moved to the United States in 2003.

According to Beltran, the past four months at Crazy Toast House Restaurant have been successful. Both the customers and employees have been positive about their experience.

“My experience here is very good and I enjoy working with Jose,” said Romario Arroyo, an employee. “We try to do our best every single day.”

Arroyo has been working at Crazy Toast House since it opened.

Anna and Len Prygoda from Milford visited the restaurant after an appointment next door.

Anna Prygoda was a chef for 25 years and took note of the cleanliness of the restaurant.

“It’s clean and the staff is friendly,” she said. “We are happy that we decided to stop here.”

The two like to visit different restaurants and try new food. At Crazy Toast House,

they enjoyed breakfast with eggs, toast, homefries, and coffee.

“These are probably the best home fries I’ve ever had,” Anna Prygoda said. “I would definitely come back.”

Whether you're looking to accompany your tacos or just looking for a refreshing drink, here are five thirstquenching Mexican beverages from Latino-owned restaurants to try this summer.

1. Aguas Frescas at Frida Restaurant and Grocery in Meriden

Frida Restaurant and Grocery, 151 Lewis Ave., is best known for serving tacos, but they also serve a number of cold drinks including Mexican classics like Chamonada

and smoothies with fun names like “Friducha” and “el corazón.”

Like many Mexican restaurants, Frida serves Aguas Frescas, a traditional Mexican drink that can accompany meals or can be sipped as

a treat. Frida makes its Aguas Frescas out of Horchata, Tamarindo and Jamaica.

Their most popular Agua Fresca is Agua de Horchata, which the menu helpfully translates as “rice water.”

The traditional beverage is made with a simple mix of water, rice, cinnamon and sweetened condensed milk. However, the top-secret proportion is unique to Frida and hits the perfect mix of sweetness, texture and temperature.

“When I make the Agua de Horchata, I make it as if I were making it for my family,” explained co-owner Magdalena Rendón in Spanish.

Magdalena and her husband, Jorge, said they make all their aguas frescas from scratch. To make Agua de Jamaica, they steep hibiscus flowers in water overnight to get the right color. To make their Agua de Tamarindo, Magdalena peels, washes, soaks, blends and sweetens the pulpy Tamarind fruit.

2. Mango chamonada at Paletería Rey Azteca in Wallingford

In addition to their ice creams and milkshakes, one of the best sellers at Paletería Rey Azteca, 23 S. Colony St. in Wallingford, is the chamonada, a semi-solid cold beverage that mixes a fruit smoothie with a touch of spicy and salty flavors.

The base of the chamonada is a blend of ice and mango

puree. Once the base is prepared, the chamonada is layered with mango chunks and chamoy sauce, a savory, spicy, and slightly tangy sauce made from pickled fruit. The resulting chamonada is a harmonious blend of sweet, tangy, spicy, and salty flavors perfect for a hot day.

3. Margaritas at Los Mariachis in Wallingford

Mexican restaurant Los Mariachis, 105 N. Colony St. in Wallingford, claims to have “the best margaritas in town” and its 17 years in business seems to bear out its claim. There are a few different kinds of margaritas on the menu, though, explained owner Loren Aguirre.

The classic house margaritas

are made with Hornitos Reposado tequila, triple sec and sour mints. A natural margarita is made with white Cazadores tequila, agave nectar, fresh lime juice and some club soda. Fruit margaritas are made with fresh fruit, white Cazadores tequila, lime juice, organic agave and club soda.

He said the restaurant keeps 20 different kinds of tequila in stock, and they don't cut corners on the quality. “We don’t use cheap tequila for our margaritas,” he said in Spanish. “We only use well-recognized tequila.”

Even though the restaurant does offer frozen margaritas, Aguirre recommends that customers drink margaritas on the rocks so as not to dilute the agave taste of tequila.

4. Jugos naturales at Cositas Ricas in Wallingford

Jugos naturales, or natural juices, are a vibrant and wholesome treat capturing the essence of tropical fruits in every sip. Cositas Ricas, 62 Center St. in Wallingford, offers a number of juices, smoothies and milkshakes on their menu.

Their most popular juices are strawberry, mango and papaya although they also offer other, seasonal fruits.

5. Micheladas at La Frontera in North Haven

La Frontera Mexican Bar and Grill, 630 Washington Ave. in North Haven, offers several cold beverages on their bar menu including a special Mangonada spiked with a tamarind liquor. Coowner Mariela Navarro said the Micheladam, however, was one of her bestsellers.

Every place makes the classic beer cocktail a little differently, but she explained the drink at La Frontera is served iced and contained Clamato, Maggi seasoning, grapefruit juice, lemon juice, chamoy sauce, valentina hot sauce and is served in a tajín-rimmed glass.

The result is tangy, spicy, and perfect for hot summer days.

"BHcare has been providing vital services to clients throughout the 12th senate district for many years," said Cohen. "Ensuring that they have the ability to deliver wrap-around care in the areas of domestic violence, substance abuse and mental health will foster healthier families and communities."

Candelora and Cohen credited other shorelinearea legislators for their support of the effort to secure a Bond Commission allocation for the BHcare project, including state Sen. Paul Cicarella, and state representatives Dave Yaccarino, Joe Zullo, Moira Rader, Robin Comey and John-Michael Parker.
