Resident, QU dean publishes 10th book
NONPROFIT HONORED
North Haven resident Chris Roush, dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University, has written the new book, “The Future of Business Journalism: Why It Matters for Wall Street and Main Street.” The book examines the dissemination divide between people who can pay thousands of dollars for high-end business journalism and the small business owners, entrepreneurs and consumers who are no longer getting the business and economics news they need to make decisions. The book explains how this has happened in the past 15 years and offers solutions on
how to fix the problem. “It’s important because the lack of information for these business owners and Roush consumers hurts society,” Roush said. “They are unable to make important decisions because they lack the information that news companies used to provide them.” “The Future of Business Journalism: Why It Matters for Wall Street and Main Street” is Roush’s 10th book. PRESIDENTIAL SPEECHES
Throughout history a call for liberty and unity on the 4th
Empress Carrero
Face Paint
Along with fireworks and parades, remarks from the country’s president remain one of the traditions of the summer holiday known as the Fourth of July informally and Independence Day officially. Marking the day the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence, our country’s leaders often use this occasion to speak on the themes of liberty and unity. Here are a few quotes from presidential remarks that are often referenced as among the most eloquent.
Let us make your next celebration fun and memorable!

Connecticut’s minimum wage increased to $14 Gov. Ned Lamont released a statement reminding residents that the state’s minimum wage was set to increase Friday, July 1. The current rate of $13 per hour will be increased to $14 per hour. The change is the result of legislation Lamont signed into law three years ago. The law scheduled several increases in the minimum wage over a five-year period.
“For too long, while the nation’s economy grew, the income of the lowest earning workers has stayed flat, making already existing pay disparities even worse and preventing hardworking families from obtaining financial security,” Lamont said. “This is a fair, gradual increase for workers who will invest the money right back into our economy and continue supporting local businesses in their communities.”
Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz said, “Governor Lamont and I are committed to making sure that our Connecticut economy works for everyone, and that includes our state’s low-income earners.” Public Act 19-4 requires the minimum wage to increase five times over a five-year period, from the then-rate of $10.10 per hour to: $11 on Oct. 1, 2019; $12 on Sept. 1, 2020;
$13 on Aug. 1, 2021; $14 on July 1, 2022; and $15 on June 1, 2023. Ultimately, beginning on Jan. 1, 2024, that same law requires the minimum wage to become indexed to the employment cost index, which is calculated by the U.S. Department of Labor, and for the first time in Connecticut the rate will grow according to economic indicators.
Fresh look for colonial garden By Cindy Golia
Recently a new fence was added to the North Haven Garden Club's Bicentennial Colonial Garden, located in back of the Historical Society building. The colonial garden was established in 1976, and its original boxwood border had to be cut back due to disease. The hope was that the border would grow back healthy, but that didn't happen. So the boxwood border was removed by public works.
The new black fence installed at the Bicentennial Colonial Garden adds charm and character. It measures 24-feet across, with two six-foot sections on each side. Stop by and see how the fence enhances the look of the garden. Don't forget to check out The North Haven Garden Club on Facebook for lots of useful and entertaining information and pictures of all our club does in our great town. New scholarship available for minority teachers By Lau Guzmán Record-Journal staff
uses her Puerto Rican roots to connect with parents.
This month, the state Department of Education will begin offering a new scholarship of up to $20,000 to high school graduates in priority school districts from a minority background who are enrolled in a four-year college.
“I get really good parent participation. Because I know the culture, I feel comfortable extending my hand to the parents,” she said. “And because they feel comfortable talking to me, then I can guide them to the resources available to them so it makes their transition a lot easier.”
Funding for the scholarship comes from a wide-reaching new bill passed by the state legislature in May that aims to improve mental and physical health of children in schools. In addition to creating a new council within the DOE to administer these scholarships, the bill grants additional funding for child care centers, school-based health centers and staffing grants for schools to hire more social workers, psyKarisma Maldonado, a bilingual teacher at Moran Middle School in Wallingford, says it’s chologists, counselors and important for a school’s faculty to reflect the diversity of its students. “As a kid, I nurses. The scholarship is specifically available to minority students graduating from priority school districts, which the state designates annually based on student population and need. Meriden was among 16 priority districts in 2021-2022. The list also included Hartford, New Haven, Manchester, Waterbury and New Britain. The new scholarship comes at a time when the nation faces an ongoing teacher shortage, exacerbated by COVID-19, in addition to a lack of diversity among teachers in Connecticut schools.

cations during the Great Migration and the problems of school segregation addressed by Brown v. Board of Education, Valentin thinks it’s important the issue receives legislative attention. “If you don’t see yourself represented in a profession growing up, then you don’t think that’s really an option for you,” he said. “A lot of people don’t want to be a teacher because there’s a lot of professions out there. It doesn’t pay that well.”

Karisma Maldonado, an educator in Wallingford Public Schools, is the first teacher in her family. Raised in Meriden in a Puerto Rican family, she is also the first person in her family to go to college. Like many minority students, she faced pressure from her friends and family to start working after graduating from high school instead of taking out student loans and going to college. Receiving little financial support from her family, she financed her education through a combination of scholarships and student loans. “As a kid, I remember not seeing somebody like me,” she said. “Now, however, when I’m in Wallingford, it’s a little different for those kids that see me teaching.” Despite the high cost, education is very important to Maldonado. Recently transferred to a position as a district TESOL/bilingual teacher at three schools, she also teaches adult education ESL classes. Her many qualifications notwithstanding, she is often mistaken for a paraprofessional staff member. “As a minority woman, I feel like I’m walking around defending myself,” she said. “I have to say ‘I actually have this degree, this degree, and this certification.’ I’m giving my resume in two minutes.” Nevertheless, minority teachers have a lot to contribute to their communities. As a Latina bilingual teacher, Alicia Lorenzo notices that the cultural disconnect between students and teachers impacts student achievement and parent involvement in school activities. She believes partnering with parents is an important part of creating community and
Lorenzo is a career-switcher and worked as a paralegal in a law firm to afford to take night classes to get an ESL degree from UConn. After 18 years of experience as an educator, she now works at Hanover Elementary School in Meriden where she encourages her students to think about going to college, even though she says many of them don’t believe in themselves. She has also become a mentor and a cheerleader to her nieces and nephews that are pursuing careers in education. “We don’t come from a background where there are teachers,” she said. “Now I have nieces and nephews that are teachers. You can see that [they are teachers] because we guided them through that process.” Latino Communities Reporter Lau Guzmán is a corps member with Report for America, a national service program that places journalists into local newsrooms. Without a plan, it is difficult to determine if you will be prepared to meet your anticipated retirement date, whether you have sufficient sums saved to put a child through college, or if you’ve taken proper steps to protect your family. In this way, your financial plan can help you stay accountable to your financial future. Useful, no matter your net worth. Turning your goals into reality without a financial plan is a lot like driving in an unfamiliar place without a GPS. Successful Senior Center design workshop
From A16
“Our students showed their generosity and care and concern for our community by enthusiastically engaging in two initiatives that work to address food insecurity in our communities,” Contrucci said. “The New Haven Pride Center shared that the donations from ‘Be Kind’ arrived just as their food pantry stock was nearly depleted and provided snacks to attendees at their LGBTQ Youth Conference.” — Press Release
The North Haven Garden Club put on a workshop at the Senior Center on June 7. Club member and floral designer Elaine Cioffi presented the program on how to make a beautiful centerpiece of silk flowers. Elaine has had years of design experience, which has brought her recognition and awards. The two-hour Senior Center program was limited to 10 participants, who received step-by-step instructions from Elaine and fellow club members Lee Fermo and Sandy Ginter. The program was extremely successful, especially since Senior Center members were able to make and take home their arrangements. The Garden Club looks forward to presenting another program in the fall.
