As part of his Eagle Scout project, Eli Holton produced an impressive and beautiful informational sign for the Tidal Marsh Trail maintained by the North Haven Trail Association. The young scout did an amazing job of assembling photos of bird species that frequent the Quinnipiac River marsh, finding QR codes that link to the sounds these birds make and producing and installing the informational sign at the trailhead, behind Target.

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION The North Haven Camera Club celebrated its 10th anniversary recently at an end-of-season gettogether. The club’s website states: “Joe Whitmore, assumed the role of president in 2019 and has diligently worked improving the club systems and continued to grow the club. In March 2020 new challenges faced the club due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The situation necessitated online virtual club meetings and finding innovative ways to continue to support members. Change, especially of this magnitude, is never easy but with the help and enthusiasm of our members we look forward to continue fostering a love of photography and camaraderie to all members well into the future!”

Next time you’re there, take a look and try some of the codes. The NHTA also maintains the Banton Quinnipiac Trail at Quinnipiac River State Park on Upper State Street and a newly-blazed trail at Chapman/Sinoway Park, also located on Upper State Street. See Eagle Scout, A5

Call Before You Dig is a program established to protect the public safety with regard to excavations near underground facilities by providing a communications link between excavators, public agencies and public utilities. Excavation damage to underground utility facilities can cause fires and explosions, injuries, deaths and significant disruptions to public utility service. Excavators must contact Call Before You Dig prior to digging, and then CBYD will notify all utilities that might be in the area. Contact CBYD by calling 811 or 1-800-9224455.

Free museum program returns By Lau Guzmán Record-Journal staff

Connecticut children can attend over 130 museums for free this summer through Connecticut Summer at the Museum, according to an announcement from Gov. Ned Lamont.

Children under 18 and one accompanying adult receive free admission to participating museums until Sept. 5. However, every participating museum has different programming and ticketing policies. Connecticut Summer at the Museum recommends parents and caregivers check with the museum about specific policies.

The program, started in 2021, comes at a time where many students missed out on hands-on educational opportunities. Aiming to provide children with engaging learning experiences, the program also makes it easier for low-income families to access the state’s cultural resources.

Children can visit high-profile museums like the Connecticut Science Center in Hartford, the Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport or the Aquarium and Seaport Museum in Mystic. However, with rising inflation and gas prices, local museums also offer kidfriendly programs.

“Free museum admission is a great way to spark children’s curiosity and keep them engaged before next school year, continuing their learning at no cost to mom and dad,” said Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz.

“The tours we set up for the summer are geared for kids,” said Meriden Historical Society Administrator Michael Zaffino. The Historical Society received a grant of $1,000 to participate in Connecticut Summer at the Museum and is adding programs to serve a demographic that isn’t usually interested in archives and artifacts. In addition to regular hours, the society offers tours on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings that include hands-on activities like scavenger hunts and picture sorting.

Kate Davis of Avon took advantage of the program last year and visited a few places with her two kids – one in high school and one in elementary school. Finding places they will both enjoy is tricky, but Davis said they visited a number of places last year, including the CT Science Center, the Roaring Brook Nature Center, Connecticut’s Old State House and the New Britain Youth Museum. The family particularly enjoyed the play area and educational toys at the youth museum.

Even though the program has been in place for a week, it is starting to show results. The Barker Character, Comic & Cartoon Museum in Cheshire has seen double the amount of visitors over the week of “We've been back there a few times since July 4, sales director Allison Fillmore said last year,” Davis said in a Facebook Messenger interview. “This year, we're going to in a phone interview. Paige earns soccer club scholarship Press Release

The North Haven Soccer Club recently awarded a $500 scholarship to Jonathan Paige, a recent high school graduate and former member of the soccer club. The annual scholarship is awarded to candidates based on participation and service to the club, their scholastic record, and an essay describing what soccer has meant to them. Paige started with the NHSC when he was 8-years-old. He was a referee for the U8/U10

in-town leagues and became a certified referee for the older travel groups. Paige was on the North Haven High School varsity soccer team his junior and senior year and will be attending Southern Connecticut State University, where he plans to study Exercise Science. The North Haven Soccer Club would like to thank Jonathan for his many years of involvement with the club and wish him well as he begins his college career.

Discovering surprises in familiar territory This is a good summer to stay home. Okay, we’re not suggesting you don’t leave your yard, but given the daunting prices at the gas station, it’s a good time to revisit the concepts of a staycation or a daycation. Let’s define “home” as, say, a radius of no more than an hour’s drive from where you live. Let’s look at how to liven up the summer without long stretches of highway getting in the way. Record-Journal contributor Francesca Fontanez recently revived the daycation

idea with an interesting itinerary for folks who live in central Connecticut. The trail she devised — with the final destination the Connecticut shore — began with a stop at Sam’s Place in North Haven. The place “just off the beaten path has some dreamy crepes that everyone should experience at least once.” Then it’s on to the beach community of West Haven, with an inviting two-mile long boardwalk, nautical cuisine and seaside activities. As Fontanez put it, you’ll forget you’re thirty minutes from home in no time. She See Staycation, A13

goes on to describe area shops and restaurants to check out. This is just one example of discovering someplace new in Connecticut to love. Getting to know nearby communities is a worthwhile pursuit. Visitors flock from all around the country and even the world to see the sights at Elizabeth Park, Gillette Castle and Old Newgate Prison, to name a few. Ctvisit.com has a full-blown list of historic, recreational, cultural, shopping, eating venues, sports opportunities and more. How many local attractions get overlooked because they’re in our own backyards?

There are other good reasons to consider sampling the local scene in a little more depth. While the pandemic kept us tied to home more than some may have liked — we can’t forget that those circumstances meant the local economy took a big hit, especially for small business. Restaurants, clubs and other entertainment venues were really hurt. Discussing economic recovery efforts earlier this year Gov. Lamont said “the pandemic has created the most challenging environment to own and operate a business since the Great Depression.” Recovery isn’t going to happen overnight. Speaking of backyards, we learned during the pandemic that many people were investing more in their homes. New patios, decks, fire pits, pools, rec rooms, gardens and the like provide a good excuse for a staycation for those who prefer not to roam at all.

As to planning your day away, the state offers a wealth of state parks and trails, farmers markets, museums and fun destinations, notably Lake Compounce, but there are several other options. Many towns offer concert series, such as Southington’s Music on the Green, with great local bands that can cap off the night with music.
