Dem registrar steps down
STATE CHAMPS
The North Haven Democratic Town Committee announced the retirement of Patricia Jackson-Marshall, the town’s Democratic Registrar of Voters. Jackson-Marshall served the citizens of North Haven since 2009.
The Max Sinoway-North Haven Indians claimed the 14U Babe Ruth baseball league state championship on July 16. The Indians compiled a record of 4-0 and defeated Trumbull in the title game, 12-7 in 9 innings. Having captured the state crown, the Indians earned the right to represent Connecticut at the New England Regional. The champs are: Jaden Wells, Philip Huntington, Bryce Montabana, Andrew Manzo, Jordan Oliveira, Ryan Semple, Jordan Higgins, John Slais, Nick Romano, Avery Karasinski, Jimmy Marshall and Jayden Nguyen. The team is coached by Angelo Romano, Mike Karasinski, Rob Manzo and James Manzo.

The Registrar of Voters performs all duties required by Connecticut General Statutes governing voter registration, while compiling and retaining accurate statistical information for federal, state and municipal agencies. Jackson-Marshall also trained Election Day workers and volunteers, and led with integrity. No matter the public pressures she faced, JacksonMarshall took the time to ensure everyone’s vote was accurately tabulated.

“We have a number of young professionals that live downtown and take the train to New Haven and Hartford,” Santiago said. “It’s instrumental for keeping cars off the highways.” Meriden resident Michael Culver rides the rail six days a week with his brother to a job at Frank Pappa & Sons Landscaping in Hartford. ”I’m down here every day catching the train,” Culver said. “It’s more convenient for me than going on the highway. More people will ride the trains now that there is more trains and not a long time to wait. I find it very convenient, I’m sure everyone else will too.”

The three-year-old Hartford Line lost about 8 percent of its total ridership during the pandemic. The cost is difficult to quantify as most of the operating costs are subsidized but the subsidies were also cut. The state received funding through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act that allowed it to restore 65 percent of service to New York and less on Hartford Line and Shoreline East. Pulling the seven trips from the daily schedule helped save money, Giulietti said.

Garden club announces essay, sculpture contest winners The North Haven Garden Club, in conjunction with The Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut and The National Garden Clubs, sponsored a High School Essay Contest. All entries were due to the North Haven Garden Club in January, and were submitted to Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut. The topic of the essay was "Adapting Our Actions To Protect Our Natural Habitats." The contest was open to students in grades 9 to 12. The essay had to be 600 to 700 words, and each word was counted.
North Haven Garden Club Youth Chair Cindy Golia presented a Certificate of Achievement along with a $100 scholarship to Elizabeth Knapp and Tariq El Mammann. Federated Garden Clubs’ Youth Chair, Dottie Fox, also presented both students with a certificate. The scholarships were made possible by a generous donation from Jeff Jolly.

for rail improvements, and bus and rail facilities. Completion of the 25-year Merritt Parkway Improvement Program is among the transportation projects poised to receive funding. Nearly $61 million is earmarked for resurfacing work. To date, a total of approximately $350 million has been spent on improving the historic and scenic, limitedaccess parkway in Fairfield County.
“Traffic in southwestern Connecticut is increasing as we return to work and travel this summer, but long delays and poor road conditions can leave drivers fuming on the road,” said Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff, D-Norwalk, in a statement. “It’s very encouraging that this stretch of the Merritt will receive a facelift, making driving conditions better and safer in our region.”
