THE WINS KEEP COMING
The North Haven U14 girls soccer team claimed the Connecticut Cup with a 5-0 victory over Watertown at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven. The locals ended the season undefeated (13-0) and tallied 58 goals along the way while allowing just five. The North Haven squad is currently riding a 28game winning streak. The Connecticut Cup champs are pictured, front row, from left: Carly Ryan, Lilah Bachman, Faith Nicholas, Rebekah Cardwell, Erica Clorite, Olivia Ranciato, Grace O’Brien, Carly Basmadjian, Clare Kelly. Back row, from left: Isabella Paradise, Alivia Garnett, Layla Bolarinho, Andrea August, Ariana Calderon, Hannah Bernardo, Olivia Coish, Alison Palmeri, Mia O’Connor, Layne Smith, Danielle Ciuci, Grace DeNardis. The team is coached by Dan O’Connor, Jim Bernard, Scott Smith and Meg Kelly (manager).
Locals lucked out with Henri With Tropical Storm Henri bearing down on the state last weekend, local communities prepared for the worst. Thankfully, the much-hyped weather event created few headaches. The National Hurricane Center downgraded Henri from a Category 1 hurricane to a tropical storm around 7 a.m. Sunday. Landfall took place near the Connecticut-Rhode Island border at midday Sunday. See Henri, A2
9/11: NEVER FORGET Communities across Connecticut have plans to honor the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001. Twenty years ago, two hijacked planes were flown into the twin towers at the World Trade Center in New York City, another crashed in a field in Pennsylvania – Flight 93 – and a fourth slammed into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. More than 3,000 people were killed in the attacks, which resulted in the United States going to war in both Iraq and Afghanistan. North Haven will mark the 20-year anniversary of 9/11 with a memorial gathering on the town green Saturday, Sept. 11 at 9 a.m. Pictured: Community members and local officials, including former state Sen. Len Fasano, gathered at Wallingford Town Hall for a 9/11 remembrance ceremony in 2018.

partment heads will monitor the situation. As always, North Haven PD will be out working with our Fire and Public works dept. to ensure the safety of our residents. Updates from North Haven PD will come in the form of social media … Stay safe North Haven and remember to call 911 for emergencies.” Meanwhile, last Friday, the North Haven Fire Department urged locals to prepare for the worst. “If the storm track stays on its current course, the primary concern will be significant rainfall and flash flood-
ing, although strong winds may still cause problems with downed trees and power lines,” the department said in a social media post. “Prepare for power outages that may last several days. Finalize assembly of your emergency plan and supplies. Remove items from your yard that could become airborne ... Public Works has made an effort to clear storm drains, but if you have one near your property and notice it has become blocked with debris, your assistance to clear them could help prevent flooding in your neighborhood.”

Right around the time Henri reached Connecticut, North Haven First Selectman Mike Freda posted a message to residents, stating, in part, “Today, we have activated our Emergency Operation Center which is being managed by our Police, Fire, Public Works and IT Departments. We also have the United Illuminating Company with us to help access any power outages. As of this moment, there are no power outages in North Haven despite the 20,000 outages across the state. Later today, I will be issuing a State of Emergency Declaration which is not intended to raise any alarm with our citizens, but primarily and procedurally to put our town into a position to be reimbursed by FEMA for storm related expenses.”

As schools across Connecticut resume class, the Connecticut Department of Public Health is reminding parents to make sure their child's immunizations are up to date. The pandemic caused many children to fall behind on their pediatric and adolescent vaccinations, increasing the potential for outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases. COVID-19 has reminded us of the importance of vaccinations to protect children from preventable illnesses. Some children may even be lacking vaccines required for school entry in the fall. As a reminder, adolescents 12 years and older are eligible to receive a COVID19 vaccine and can receive their adolescent vaccinations at the same visit. Officials says residents can again feed birds
The Department of Energy
and Environmental Protection cited “a considerable decrease in dead birds as of mid-August” and the “increasing dispersal of birds” at this time of year in the state. DEEP, which previously reported three birds with the condition were found dead in Connecticut, said the cause has not yet been de-
termined. Both the state agency and the Connecticut Audubon Society urged residents to be vigilant about cleaning feeders and bird baths with soap and water at least once a week and then disinfecting them with a 10 percent bleach solution to prevent potential spread of infectious disease. Feeders and bird baths should be
rinsed well after cleaning and allowed to air-dry. Residents are also urged to remove any spilled feed from underneath their feeders. Reported symptoms of the mystery illness have included eye swelling and crusty discharge, as well as numerous neurological signs such
as head tremors, weakened leg muscles, falling to the side or the inability to stand, and excessive vocalizations. DEEP said the majority of birds reported to have the affliction have been fledgling common grackles, blue jays, European starlings and American robins. Other species of songbirds have also been reported.
FRIENDSHIP BLOOMS A recent North Haven Rotary Club breakfast meeting featured Walt Brockett speaking about Daytime Gardener of North Haven activities and the group’s collaboration with several other town organizations. Brockett is pictured with Rotary president Theresa Viele.

Scarecrow contest returns this fall
Letters to the Editor
The North Haven Lions Club would like to express its deep gratitude for the continued generosity of the citizens of North Haven. At our August Second Saturday Service Project, we collected approximately 750 pounds of food, to be shared between the North Haven Community Services food bank and the Ecumenical food bank at the North Haven Congregational Church. This is by far the most we have collected in a single event this year. We also received $120 in gift cards and cash, which will be used to purchase food for our next event; and well over 200 pairs of eyeglasses. And our four-legged friends did not fare badly. Over 100 pounds of dog and cat food and treats, 25 towels and five blankets will be shared between The Animal Haven and Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation.

Wharton Brook State Park still closed to swimming By Faith Williams Record-Journal staff
A sign is posted in front of the pond at Wharton Brook State Park declaring “Swimming Prohibited.”
WALLINGFORD — A sign saying “Area Closed to Swimming” remained in front of the pond at Wharton Brook State Park Wednesday after high levels of bacteria were reported last week. On Tuesday, Aug. 17, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection tested the water at the park for the presence of “certain indicator of bacteria.” The department monitors and tests swimming areas and beaches weekly and sends samples to the Department of Public Health Lab. The pond at the park has been closed to swimming since the discovery.

Protesters disrupt Lamont’s back-to-school event CHESHIRE — What began as a back-to-school roundtable discussion at a local school ended abruptly Wednesday when members of the “Parents Choice” group interrupted the event with chants against mask wearing and vaccination. The meeting, which began at 1:30 p.m. at Highland Elementary School on Highland Avenue, included Gov. Ned Lamont and numerous state and local education officials. It was billed as a discussion about the new school year, including safety protocols designed to curb the spread of COVID19. But things quickly turned sour when Dr. Deidre Gifford, the state's acting public health commissioner, mentioned that individuals who are not vaccinated will be required to provide a weekly negative COVID-19 test to work or attend school.
as state officials tried to answer questions from Cheshire Superintendent of Schools Jeff Solan. Solan attempted to quell the rising tensions, but was met with more resistance from the crowd. At around 2:10 p.m., Solan abruptly ended the meeting, cutting off the question and answer portion of the event.
Amy Bourdon, a representative from “Parents Choice” — a group that advocates for parents to have the choice over whether their children should wear masks in school, was one of “While we tried to have the protestors. She spoke to some sort of decorum, it was The Herald after the meetincredibly disappointing that ing. a few of Cheshire’s residents decided to be so disrespect- “Our biggest concern is that today’s event wasn’t publiful,” Solan said after the meeting. “I am proud that cized and it happened in our Governor Lamont was able town in one of our public
buildings,” Bourdon said. “This wasn’t a ‘roundtable’ discussion, it was a panel with pre-approved questions and pre-approved answers. We wanted answers from Governor Lamont and he was the only one on the panel not asked a question. Ultimately, what we want is a written out policy for mask removal and disposal. If they gave that to us today would have been very different.” Bourdon and her group have been adamant about their
disdain for Lamont’s executive order, and made their presence known at the last Cheshire Board of Education meeting when the state mask policy was discussed. “I feel bad for having to yell at the superintendent, but they are ultimately responsible for enforcing the governor’s illegal orders and they need to stand up for us,” Bourdon said. “This is just the beginning for us. It's a shame we even have to do this.”

Others began to shout as well, yelling comments such as, “I can’t hear you, take off your mask,” and “Are we in Nazi Germany?”

SUDOKU ANSWER
Lamont has also signed an executive order that requires masks to be worn in schools until at least Sept. 30, when his emergency powers are set to expire. It remains uncertain what will happen after that date. “Who is going to pay for those tests!?” asked one angry parent. The event was attended by more than a dozen members of the public.
to come down and support Cheshire for all that we had done during the pandemic, it’s just a shame that some people had to get in the way of that.”
