Also, NHCC members will host a household hazardous waste collection Saturday, Oct. 2 at HazWaste Central (Regional Water Authority headquarters), 90 Sargent Drive in New Haven. MONEY MATTERS
Six questions to ask during open enrollment By Jeff Jolly
In the fall, many employers offer an open enrollment period – a window of time to select your benefits package for the coming year. It’s easy to overlook this opportunity and maintain the status quo, but this could be a costly mistake given the significant role benefits play in your financial life. This year resolve to review your options with a fresh perspective. Consider the following six questions to get started: Have you experienced a major life change recently? If you’re on the verge of having a child, recently had a child graduate from college and enter the workforce, or
the job status of you or your spouse has changed, reconsider your health insurance options to accommodate your current situation. If you are experiencing or anticipating major health expenses, you might decide to choose a health plan with a lower deductible. Or perhaps you may decide you are better off paying a lower monthly premium with a higher deductible.

Is a Health Savings Account worth considering?
However, unlike HSAs, these dollars do not carry over from year to year. Any leftover money is lost, so you’ll want to plan in advance to determine an appropriate amount to save in the account.

With an HSA, you contribute pre-tax dollars into the acHow do your employer’s benefits selections compare count. What are your financial goals?
Are there other benefits I should contemplate?
Kick off open enrollment season by reviewing your financial goals. If you’re married, talk to your spouse and realign on key priorities for the next year. Having a clear vision can help you evaluate benefit options with your lifestyle and financial situation for the coming year at the forefront. If you would like additional support, consult a financial advisor before you finalize your enrollment form.
Benefit options vary by employer. Depending on where you work, you might have the ability to enroll in benefits such as dental coverage, eye exams, legal assistance, term life insurance or other specific services that may be useful. Carefully weigh these options to see if they are cost effective.

Called “Full Color Connecticut,” the campaign features the state’s renowned fall foliage while paying tribute to all the other colors and experiences state residents and visitors can enjoy in Connecticut this autumn — from the golds of corn mazes and the pinks of cotton candy to the blues of coastline sails and the ambers of craft beer.
“Connecticut’s tourism industry will play an important role in the rebuilding of our economy, which is why we’ve invested heavily in helping it recover from the pandemic. This campaign is just the latest way we’re helping to do that and encourage everyone to get out and safely support local tourism businesses.”

Lamont to extend emergency powers

Gov. Ned Lamont said Tuesday morning he expects to extend his COVID-19 emergency declaration for at least 90 days, a necessary step in his view to maintain key mandates, including a statewide requirement for wearing masks in schools and for educators and health-care workers to be vaccinated.
“What I want is legislative input on the executive orders,” Lamont told reporters after remarks to the MetroHartford Alliance business association at Dunkin’ Donuts Park. “I like to know where they stand. I like to have their fingerprints on some decisions. When we work together, we’re a lot stronger.”
Lamont’s chief of staff and general counsel will brief legislative leaders on the administration’s view of the current threat Under the provisions of a law passed in Ju- posed by the pandemic, as well as the exly, when legislators endorsed an extension ecutive orders it considers vital to continof his emergency powers until Sept. 30, ue. not only safely open for business, but also offering some of the best and brightest fall colors and experiences the region has to offer — closer to home,” Christine Castonguay, interim director of the Connecticut Office of Tourism, said. “All of this activity is aimed at driving more revenues to more businesses as we continue to navigate this everchanging environment.” Running through Nov. 20, the “Full Color Connecticut” campaign features hundreds of Connecticut tourism businesses and offerings in every corner of the state, including arts, culture and theater venues, casinos, fairs and festivals, historical sites, hotels, inns and B&Bs, museums, orchards, restaurants, shops and state parks. It utilizes a mix of integrated marketing tactics to reach potential visitors in both English and Spanish.
“Ample rainfall this summer and low overnight temperatures in September will lead to a synchronized display of dazzling colors peaking in mid-to-late October,” Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Commissioner Katie Dykes said. “Connecticut has some of the most diverse tree species in the region, which leads to a wider variety of colorful leaves — yellows, bronzes, oranges, reds and purples — for all to enjoy in our state parks and forests, as well as our pristine fishing and boating areas. Fall is the perfect time to get outside and try something new.”
“‘Full Color Connecticut’ spotlights many of Connecticut’s beloved fall agritourism activities, which in turn support hundreds of Connecticut farmers and growers throughout the state,” Connecticut Department of Agriculture Commissioner Bryan Hurlburt said. “Whether it’s enjoying pick-your-own options at area orchards, exploring local farmers markets Connecticut will provide an especially colorful backdrop or sampling Connecticutfor fall activities this year, ac- made wine, there’s an abuncording to Connecticut’s De- dance of experiences to be partment of Energy and En- enjoyed all season long.” vironmental Protection. — Press Release

“We’re going to provide an overview of the executive orders that are in place and have, I would say, a very thorough conversation about what the next steps should be come Sept. 30,” said Paul Mounds, chief of staff. His staff later said the governor most likely would extend
In interviews Monday, no one suggested that the General Assembly will block Lamont from continuing his mandate of mask wearing in schools or vaccinations for state employees and workers in schools, day care, nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.
But leaders of the Democratic majorities and Republican minorities are divided over whether the threat posed by the current level of COVID infections justifies a continued state of emergency. On Monday, the state reported 1,348 new infections since Friday. Of 327 persons hospitalized with COVID, 72.2% were not fully vaccinated. House Speaker Matt Ritter, D-Hartford, said Democrats are trying to set reasonable expectations about a pandemic that is largely under control in Connecticut but must be carefully managed over a period of months, not weeks. “To me, how you do it is the debate,” Ritter said. “But if the argument is whether or not we’re going to be living through COVID-19 for the next four to five months, the answer is undoubtedly yes, and we have to have policies that accompany that.” Mounds, and leaders of the Democratic majorities that control the General Assembly, said that there is an 18-
month track record on which to judge the Democratic governor’s exercise of emergency powers.

“I don’t think we’re in that crisis that we once were,” Kelly said. “I’m not trying to diminish what COVID means. I think it’s still something that needs to be taken seriously.” “I think Connecticut residents are getting weary of this extension after extension after extension at a time when it seems that the emergency is under control,” Formica said. Formica said he does not believe the school mask requirement is onerous to children, but it could reasonably be left to local school and health officials, perhaps with state-mandated metrics about infection rates to guide them. Candelora and Formica said that President Joe Biden’s
announcement that he will seek to force large employers to either require vaccinations or regular testing has aggravated sensitivity to governmental powers.
