Scarecrow contest returns
HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
The North Haven Garden Club, in conjunction with North Haven Parks and Recreation Department and North Haven Memorial Library Children's Department, are sponsoring the 3rd annual Scarecrow Contest Oct. 9 to 30.
October is Italian American Heritage Month, a time to honor the valuable contributions Italian immigrants and Italian Americans have made over the centuries. To kick off the month, the Greater New Haven Italian American Heritage Committee and the town of North Haven are bringing live music and Italian food offerings to the town green on Saturday, Oct. 2. The Italian Heritage Concert features Rich DiPalma and Echoes of Sinatra and Dino, and several food vendors, including J Roos, Sylvia’s Bakery and Joe’s Ice Cream Truck, will be onsite. The event runs from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free. More than 5 million Italians immigrated to the United States between 1820 and 2000. Currently, there are over 26 million Americans of Italian descent in the U.S., making Italian-Americans the fifth largest ethnic group in the nation.
The contest is open to everyone, and every age group. Prizes will be awarded. Deadline for registration is Thursday, Sept. 30.

Meanwhile, in Montana, tribes and the parents of 18 students filed a federal lawsuit in July, alleging state education leaders are violating a state constitutional requirement to teach all children about the unique culture and heritage of Native Americans. A 2019 report from the National Congress of American Indians, which surveyed 35 states with federally recognized tribes, found nearly 90% of states said they had efforts underway to improve the quality and access to Native American curriculum. While a majority said it’s included in their schools, less than half said it was required and specific to tribal nations in their state. “We are seeing a focus on different races and issues,” said Aaron Payment, first vice president of the National Congress of American Indians and chairperson of the 44,000-member Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians in Michigan. Payment, who holds a doctorate in educational leadership, said Native American Studies should be incorporated across curriculum, and not taught “just at Thanksgiving, where it’s a condensed sort of module.” He doesn’t support states mandating the curriculum per se but believes states should provide incentives and funding to develop curriculum, with input from tribes. The Connecticut legislation makes it mandatory for schools to teach Native American studies starting with the 2023-2024 school year. It passed despite concerns raised by teachers

FREE PILATES CLASS
Back to school, and better than ever From Carlos Collazo, executive director of the Ulbrich Boys and Girls Club: It is my pleasure to announce two organizational staff changes for the upcoming school year. From growing up in the club, to representing our club as 2017 Youth of the Year, to working at our Wallingford Clubhouse for many years, it is my honor and pleasure to announce Jarelyn Sandoval as the new Wallingford Clubhouse Site Coordinator. Jarelyn will continue to be a resource for our Club kids and parents, continue to provide leadership and guidance to our Youth Development Professionals and Jr. Counselors, and continue to bring her excitement and vision for quality after school programming. I am equally excited to announce Alexa Matic as our new Membership Coordinator. Alexa will be the main point of contact for parents in North Haven and Wallingford. Alexa has been an Office Administrator for large corporations going on more than 10 years, and now she is part of our team. She is excited to not only perform her duties, but also form connections with the parents/ guardians of our club members. If you have a question regarding membership, payment arrangements, or are wondering when the next Parent Advisory Council meeting is, Alexa is ready to connect with you.

In North Dakota, a bill became law this year that requires all elementary and secondary schools, public and private, to include Native American tribal history in their curriculum, with an emphasis on tribes within the state. In Oregon, a similar law took effect in 2019 to provide “historically accurate, culturally embedded, place-based, contemporary, and developmentally appropriate” American Indian and Alaska Native curriculum in five subject areas.
