Home Depot: Building bonds one event at a time
By David Matos Record-Journal staff
Sounds of hammering and laughter echoed while chil dren and their families put together do-it-yourself wood kits at the Spanish Commu nity of Wallingford (SCOW), in partnership with The Home Depot.
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the mega store hosted a woodworking activity at the non-profit or ganization on Saturday. Like most SCOW events, the ac

According to Jonathan Wilder, operations manager for the North Haven location of The Home Depot, every month the company cele brates a topic involving di versity, equity and inclusion (DEI). “We were looking to see how we can tie what we talk about in our stores with DEI through the communi ty,” Wilder said.

Gaylord Sanatorium was founded in 1902 at the height of the tuberculosis pandemic. A group of doc tors met to create the New Haven County Anti Tuber culosis Association. The group purchased an un

Stefanowski acknowledges work in Saudi Arabia
By Susan Haigh Associated Press
HARTFORD For months, Bob Stefanowski, the Repub lican candidate for governor in Connecticut, declined to reveal the clients of his lu crative business consulting firm, saying he had a duty to customers to keep certain things confidential.
Democrats wielded the lack of transparency like a cud gel, saying Stefanowski must be hiding something.
Now, at least one aspect of his work has been revealed. Stefanowski has acknowl edged for the first time that he has done consulting work related to a proposed futur istic city in Saudi Arabia, backed by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Stefanowski confirmed to Hearst Connecticut Media, in a story published Wednesday, that he has been involved with the NOEM project since 2019.
His acknowledgement came after being presented with documents showing he met with top executives of the planned green energy city, including an email sent in 2018 that referred to a meet ing he had in London with someone involved with the Saudi state-run investment fund.
Stefanowski told Hearst he did not work directly with the Saudi government or the investment fund. “Just be cause you meet with a coun try doesn’t mean you agree with all their policies and procedures,” he said. “This is a green energy project that could help the world. That’s what it was limited to.”
He said he continues to con sult on the project but has “scaled down” his involve ment during his campaign for governor.
A message was left seeking comment with his cam paign, which was expected to issue a statement later Wednesday.
Saudi Arabia has a compli cated relationship with the U.S. Human rights advocates have condemned the Per sian Gulf nation for oppress ing dissent and the 2018 killing of U.S.-based journal ist Jamal Khashoggi.
President Joe Biden on Tues day there would be “ conse quences ” for Saudi Arabia for backing recent oil pro duction moves that were seen as likely to help Russia in its war with Ukraine.
Yet the kingdom has also been a military and diplo matic partner and is seen as a counterbalance to Iran’s influence in the region to Iran.
Connecticut Democrats, in cluding Gov. Ned Lamont’s campaign, have criticized Stefanowski for not revealing his consulting clients.
“There’s no telling whose in terests he truly represents,” Lamont’s campaign said in one written statement.
Stefanowski, 60, is an ac countant and financial ana lyst who has written two books on mergers and ac quisitions. He once worked as the CEO of a payday loan
company and has also worked for General Electric and investment bank UBS, among other entities.

Stefanowski has said previ ously that he would release what he could “ethically and legally” provide to the public about his consulting clients.
“In a consulting firm, there’s always confidential informa tion,” he told reporters earli er this year.
Three years of tax docu ments released in Septem ber show Stefanowski and his wife Amy earned a total
of $36.8 million and have three limited liability com panies, including one called Lolo Consulting.
His campaign said in a state ment that Lolo Consulting provides services including “merger & acquisition and due diligence support, cor porate strategy and other general consulting services.”
Also, Lolo has advised on “acquisitions and joint ven tures in the financial ser vices, health care and energy sectors,” according to the statement.

Jurors hear replay of some testimony in Alex Jones’ trial Associated Press
WATERBURY Jurors revis ited testimony from the hus band of a Sandy Hook Ele mentary School shooting victim as a third full day of deliberations began Wednesday in conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ Con necticut defamation trial.
At the jury’s request, court began with a replay of a roughly hourlong audio recording of William Sher lach’s trial testimony. His wife, school psychologist Mary Sherlach, was among the 26 people killed in the 2012 shooting.
Her husband is among the lawsuit’s 15 plaintiffs, who include victims’ relatives and an FBI agent. All testi fied about being harassed by people who say the shooting was staged in a plot for more gun control.
Jones and his company were found liable for damages last year. The six-person jury is tasked with determining how much the Infowars
show host should pay to the plaintiffs victims’ families and the FBI agent for calling the massacre a hoax.
William Sherlach, who goes by Bill, testified that he wor ried for his and his family’s safety because of the shoot ing deniers’ vitriol.
Sherlach testified that he saw online posts falsely positing that the shooting was a hoax; that his wife never existed; that she didn’t have the credentials to be a school psychologist; that his family was actually named Goldberg and lived in Flori da; and that he was part of a financial cabal and some how involved with the school shooter’s father.
Sherlach didn’t testify about receiving any harassing mes sages directly, though he al so said that he didn’t have social media accounts or use email. Nor did he mention anything that Jones said specifically.
The jury has been instructed to arrive at two compensato
ry damages amounts per plaintiff: one sum for defamation damages and another for emotional dis tress damages. Jurors also
will decide whether Jones should pay punitive dam ages; the judge would decide the amounts later.
Each compensatory dam
ages amount has to be at least $1, but there is no cap. The plaintiffs’ lawyers have suggested total damages

Gaylord
“The City of New Haven had experienced what equals an average of one death per day for five years from tubercu losis, so we were at a crisis not just in the City of New Haven and the county of New Haven but really global ly. It was very much a pan demic,” Knapp said.
Knapp said at that time, the cure for patients with tuber culosis was fresh air, good food and exercise.
“Because we were on a farm, we actually were self-suffi cient,” Knapp said. “We were a working farm that had dairy and chickens and corn and we were able to provide a lot of the healthy foods that our patients would con sume In the beginning, our cottages that were erect ed on campus had porches and our patients actually slept outside on the porches in the fresh air, even in the winter.”
With Wallingford and Meri den being known for the sil ver industry, Gay lord opened a silver shop that ran from 1923 to 1960 to give patients the opportunity to work and make some money while they were recu perating. “If a man is a pa tient at Gaylord and he’s not working, his family doesn’t have any income and he can’t send money home to them, but when he learned the craft and he could fash ion jewelry or some spoons and serving pieces,” Knapp said, “we allowed our pa tients to make money.”
Up until the discovery and use of the antibiotic strepto mycin to successfully treat tuberculosis in the 1940s, Gaylord doctors were fight ing the disease and along the way, Knapp said realized they had the capacity to help people with other illnesses.
“Leading up to that, we real ly started to notice as we were getting better care for people with tuberculosis that there were other types of chronic disease or ail ments and illnesses that we were well suited to address,”
Knapp said. “... As we start ed to see fewer and fewer tu berculosis patients, we start ed to see more and more people who were suffering from other chronic dis eases. ”
In 1948, Gaylord Sanatorium became Gaylord Hospital to address healthcare issues for people with chronic illnesses.
“We realized that (Gaylord) had the expertise, the infras tructure, the campus, the knowledge, the know-how to transition itself to this new world of rehabilitation to take people, just as we have always done, who have long chronic diseases and work toward a better outcome, better quality of life, better health and do the same thing with this emerging field called rehabilitation,” Knapp said.
Today
therapy and then returned to their homes and their lives and their businesses,” Knapp said.
Wallingford Mayor William Dickinson Jr. said Gaylord has had a positive impact in his community. “Over that time, people who have used their services obviously have come to know Wallingford in a very positive light,” Dickinson said. “That’s where they re ceived their great care and were able to enjoy their lives far more than if they hadn't been here for the care that Gaylord provides.”
More recently, Gaylord has partnered with the Universi ty of Connecticut to launch the first and only residency program in physical medicine and rehabilitation. The first four residents be gan the program in July at UConn and Hartford Health Care. For the next three years, they will rotate through Gaylord, where “they will learn about physi cal medicine and rehabilita tion, which is also called physiatry,” Knapp said. “ ... We are working on educat ing tomorrow’s doctors to day.”
be innovative and to be that place where perhaps others can come to Gaylord and work with us and do beta testing of equipment or new approaches to care.”
Community
Rep. Mary Mushinsky now has a personal tie to Gaylord after her father received treatment there after falling while doing home mainte nance. Mushinsky also helped raise funds for Gay lord to help the staff mem bers upgrade the health care records system.
“Wallingford and the state are very lucky to have a world-renowned specialty care hospital like Gaylord lo cated here,” Mushinksy said.
“They are skilled at rehabili tation of patients with trau matic injuries, strokes and spinal cord damage. I have seen the remarkable restora tion of function in brain damaged people.”
Gaylord Specialty Healthcare has grown to have regional and national experts in spinal cord injuries, trau matic brain injuries (TBIs), significant strokes, pul monary diseases and more. “We continue to be the experts in other medical ly complex cases, post surgi cal complications,” Knapp said.
And years after fighting the tuberculosis pandemic, Gay lord doctors worked through the COVID-19 pandemic. “All these patients who were suffering from pulmonary disease and put on ventila tors, the sickest of those pa tients came to us from all the partner acute care hospitals around the state and even outside of the state to come to Gaylord to be weaned off of the ventilator, to be strengthened through medi cal management and physical and occupational and speech
In June, Gaylord also launched a certified nursing assistant (CNA) academy, “where we are teaching the next generation of certified nursing assistants,” Knapp said. “We’ve done a June class and an August class and we are full for the De cember class. This was im portant to Gaylord because as a hospital, we are called LTAC, which stands for longterm acute care hospital and the CNA programs don’t al ways address the more com plex patients that we see.”
Gaylord is also working on getting into research through the Milne Institute, which includes in-depth training “in the ‘heart of listening,’ a visionary approach to cran iosacral work,” according to its website
“We like to talk about re search that’s not bench re search, but bedside re search,” Knapp said. “We’re really looking at ways that we can impact the experi ence for the patients, have better outcomes and how to
Gaylord was a partner in the Wallingford 350+2 Jubilee celebration’s business and agriculture day and worked with the Quinnipiac Cham ber of Commerce to put on a series of events that day, said Ray Andrewsen, execu tive director of the chamber.
Andrewsen said the setting of Gaylord is an aspect that makes it special.
“It’s surrounded by nature, you’re surrounded by a nat ural component that makes it really lovely,” Andrewsen said. “If you are going to re hab, it’s nice to be in a place like that.”
Gaylord’s president and chief executive officer Sonja LaBarbera said she is look ing forward to Gaylord mak ing more progress in the healthcare industry.
“I am incredibly proud to be part of an institution that has continuously evolved to deliver the best care possi ble,” LaBarbera said. “We look forward to another 120 years of seeking discoveries and solutions, improving pa tients’ lives and as always thinking possible for those we serve. ”

Report: City of New Haven cools on building city-owned broadband
NEW HAVEN New Haven is scrapping the idea of building a city-owned highspeed internet network and now plans instead to en courage expansion of exist ing, largely private broad band services, the New Haven Independent report ed Saturday.
Mayor Justin Elicker and Economic Development Of ficer Dean Mack told the newspaper in an interview that the decision stemmed from multiple factors, in cluding current providers’ own growth plans and new federal money for improving broadband access.
“We want to make sure we’re not spending local tax dol lars on something the feder

could be in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
The plaintiffs include an FBI agent who responded to the shooting and relatives of eight victims who died. Twenty children and six ed ucators were killed.
Jones has bashed the trial as a “kangaroo court,” described it as an affront to free speech rights, and called the judge a “tyrant.” His lawyer told the jury that any damages awarded should be minimal.
al government will already be covering,” he said, and of ficials also now realize “that there’s market interest in do ing what we were thinking of doing ourselves.”
The $1 trillion infrastructure deal that President Joe Biden signed last November in cludes money to expand af fordable high-speed internet access. Biden is a Democrat, as is Elicker.
New Haven hired a consult ing firm in January to ex plore options for improving internet access, including the possibility of creating a public network. Mack said the city paid the consultants about $40,000, and their work “really helped us out.”
The city now plans to tap federal subsidies, woo new broadband providers and encourage current ones to carry out their expansion plans.
Project
throughout the three of our towns,” Esterheld said. “We decided that this was the problem we would focus on.”
The friends’ Girl Scout Bronze Award project started last January, and the schools they had in mind were Clin tonville Elementary School in North Haven, HaddamKillingworth Intermediate School in Higganum and Or chard Hills Elementary School in Milford.
“At the end of the school year, Abby met with me to propose her idea of a wel come committee,” Clin tonville principal Lauretta Dowling said. “She ex plained that she noticed how students would join Clin tonville throughout the school year and felt that it must be hard for new stu dents because the school year had already begun.”
Dowling said Esterheld, then a fifth-grader, laid out her plan to have current students
act as ambassadors to help new students get to know the school and make new friends.
“When Abby explained her idea, I was sold,” Dowling said. “Abby had a solution that helped new students make new friends and helped current students practice communication skills. It was a win-win.”
At Clintonville, art teacher Kaitlyn Lenti and music teacher Julie Luppino are ad visors to the welcome com mittee.
“They are planning what this new welcome committee will look like in each grade level,” Dowling said. “We are all excited to provide oppor tunities for new and current students to get to know one another.”
Part of getting the Girl Scout Bronze Award entails work ing together in a group to solve a problem. Esterheld said she and her friends have bi-weekly meetings over Zoom to ensure they meet all their requirements for the award.
The girls created a packet with a list of questions for new students to answer so that their peers can get to know them. Esterheld also compiled a collection of items, including LEGOs, bin go cards and chips, and ac tivity sheets, which can help students break the ice.

nity program called Team Depot where employees of different store locations vol unteer on local projects for the community. Volunteers representing different stores in surrounding towns partic ipated in the workshop, in cluding associates from North Haven, Orange, East Haven, Trumbull and Bridgeport.
“We thought it’d be a cool chance to bring that out into the Hispanic community and really get to know the community around here,” Wilder said. “But also have a chance for our associates to be involved in something that’s important to the His panic heritage.”
The Home Depot hosts a kids’ woodworking work shop in its stores every first Saturday of the month. This year marks the 25th anniver sary of the initiative.
“I think it’s awesome just for us to partner (with SCOW)
because just for the kids to do something positive and not negative and just to have a different mindset on every thing,” said Jacqueline An del, a Home Depot volun teer. “That’s what we provide for the community, to uplift and not be negative or any thing like that. That’s mostly what it’s about, (providing) a positive setting for the kids.”
Andel explained that this event provides a haven for the children of the Walling ford community to practice their endurance by putting together a substantial prod uct made of wood that they can take home and use.
“Well, if they want to be a builder, this is the start,” Andel said. “This is an opportu nity to see what it’s about, even if it’s just like a little toy or something like that, it’sa start in their brain to do something more with their life and when they get older.”
Parent feedback
Parents and their children were greeted by the smiling faces of the volunteers and a table decorated with orange
aprons for the children to wear during the activity.
The children had three wood kits to choose from a race car, a mini pottery bench and a fire boat, in recognition of October being Fire Safety Month.
Former executive director of SCOW Maria Harlow brought her daughter, Fiona Harlow, to the workshop, not only because of her pre vious involvement with
SCOW but because she thought it was special that The Home Depot was shar ing the activity with the community during Hispanic Heritage Month. Maria Har low is the currect executive director of the MeridenWallingford United Way.
“It is wonderful to bring op portunities to connect the community with different ac tivities that are available in the town,” she said. “This
one, in particular, I love be cause it’s hands-on so the children enjoy it very much. I also love to see how busi nesses that our communities support and our communi ties buy things from offer this activity for the children. I think it is very exciting.”
Rocio Piña, alongside her husband, brought her two daughters, Helene and Emi lie Piña because she wanted to do something as a family, learn with the community and do an activity that can help their children in the fu ture.
“It just helps with meeting with other kids and learning other things besides your daily routines,” Rocio Piña said. “This activity also helps them communicate better with others.”
Peggy O’Connor stopped by with her daughter, Isabel O’ Connor and son Nico O’Connor on their way to a robotics class in the SCOW building, because a friendly volunteer asked if they want ed to join, and having expe rienced the in-store kid’s workshop at Home Depot before the pandemic, they couldn’t say no.
“My kids love it and I’m His panic so why not,” Peggy O’Connor said. “They love the hands-on, getting to hammer, getting to build. They love it and they feel like they’re making some thing.”
