NHFD to host drug Take Back National DEA Take Back events provide a way for people to safely dispose of unwanted prescription drugs throughout the year. During the October 2020 Take Back, Americans turned in 882,919 pounds of prescription medication at nearly 6,174 sites operated by the Drug Enforcement Agency and more than 4,896 of its state and local law enforcement partners. Combined with previous Take Back events, the DEA and its partners have taken in over 6,300 tons of pills. On Saturday, Oct. 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., unwanted prescription drugs can be dropped off at the North Haven Fire Department at 10 Broadway. A press release announcing the local Take Back states, the Town of North Haven-DEA effort provides “the public the opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.”

Distracted driving October is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The bottom line is if you text and drive, you will pay. An analysis by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety of 2009-2012 data found that while more than 80 percent of drivers believed it was completely unacceptable for a motorist to text behind the wheel, more than a third of those same drivers admitted to reading text messages while operating a passenger motor vehicle themselves. Texting while driving is dangerous and illegal. Break the cycle. Remember: U Drive. U Text. U Pay.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

NO SEW BLANKET

NCADV’s vision is to create a culture where domestic violence is not tolerated and where society empowers victims and survivors while holding abusers accountable. The group’s Day of Unity, held in 1981, evolved into Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which is marked each October.

In a Sept. 30 proclamation, President Joe Biden stated, “Today, we recognize the important roles of the public and private sectors, nonprofit organizations, communities, and individuals in helping to prevent and address domestic violence and

create a culture that refuses to tolerate abuse. “Domestic violence affects millions of people in the United States, causes significant harm to the physical and mental health of survivors and their families, undermines their economic stability and overall well-being, and is a stain on the conscience of our country.” In an Oct. 5 press release, the U.S. Justice Department announced more than $476 million in Office on Violence Against Women grants. “Domestic Violence Awareness Month is a sobering reminder of the harm domestic violence inflicts across our country, at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic means that for many survivors, abuse may be comSee Awareness, A9

MONEY MATTERS

Should you consider your home a retirement asset?

Keep these factors in mind as you consider how the value of your home may be used to bankroll retirement. You need somewhere to live. Whether it is in your current house or somewhere else, you need a roof over your head, and that usually comes with a sizeable cost. Many people who downsize their homes underestimate how much they’ll end up spending on a smaller condo or to live in a retirement community. In fact, some come to realize that their new accommodations are on par with or even more expensive than their previous homes – especially considering that they may end up spending two or three decades there in retirement. Regardless of your situation, do the math so you know what you’re getting yourself into financially and how it will factor into your plans for retiring.

pared with a stock, bond or mutual fund that can readily be priced in the market and bought or sold daily, a home

is a different kind of investment. The value can’t be precisely determined, and it is not considered to be as much of a liquid asset. If you’re serious about selling your home, it may be worthwhile to hire a professional appraiser to give you a realistic sense of how much you can expect to a buyer to pay you for it. Keeping these factors in mind, it’s important to maintain a proper perspective about the value of your home in the context of your overall financial picture. Be careful not to overestimate a home’s contribution to your retirement security based on its current valuation, because those numbers can change. Even as your home is appreciating in value, remain diligent about saving for retirement in other ways, such as through a workplace savings plan or an IRA.

about your plans for retirement and your home’s potential value in your overall portfolio. A qualified financial advisor can recommend strategies for generating income in retirement and provide guidance on how to build equity regardless of your home’s value. Then, any funds you generate from your home will be an added retirement bonus.

Store From A1

There’s a large selection of costume jewelry, shoes, housewares, toys, knickknacks and books at the store at 549 Center St., behind Vinny’s Deli. Jenn Clapp, owner of The Mason Jar, sells old, new and local items. “Everybody that comes in will find something in this store,” she said. “They say, ‘oh my god, I had that when I was a kid,’ or ‘I remember my mom had one of those.’” Clapp, a North Haven resident, named the store after her 4-year-old grandson, Mason Rigrodsky. “He comes in, he calls it ‘my mason jar,’” she said, pointing out his chalk scrawls on the blackboard wall behind a white mesh metal shelving unit holding men’s hats and ties, magazines and prints. The entire store is about 600 square feet. The main room showcases women’s and men’s clothing and accessories. The side rooms, some of which once housed chicken coops and still have low ceilings, are stuffed with vintage ephemera. Clapp sells some new hand-

made items as well, like candles and art prints. “I seem to be the only one in my family that has this sort of vintage bug,” she said. Clapp ran a vintage store at the same location about 10 years ago, called XO Vintage. She reopened with the new store name in January after Lucy’s Laundry closed — Lucia Pacheco now runs San Juanito Mexican Store on Route 5. Clapp works at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury as a respiratory therapist, a career she’s had for almost 30 years, caring for premature babies all the way up to senior citizens. During the ongoing COVID-

19 pandemic, she has worked with many patients struggling with and dying from the disease. She lost her father to COVID-19 in July 2020. “He used to be, of all things, a cigarette salesman,” she said, pointing out a photo on the wall of her father standing with a group of colleagues around a table of Kent menthol cigarettes. She said that the store is her “happy place,” a respite from the intensity of her job. “I wanted a place where I could go that I didn't have to think about all that stuff,” she said, “so I reopened my store.” Clapp said her interest in vintage clothing was sparked when she started The Whitney Players Theater Company in Hamden, a group that is still thriving today.

“When we would put on musicals,” she said, “I’d go out and look for stuff, and I realized how much I loved it. I just started keeping some of it, and then I started (selling) on Etsy, and then ended up opening my own store.” Clapp finds some items at estate sales, but she also buys from people who have clothing to sell. “I'll ask them what year they’re from, because I don't really want their clothes from now,” she said. “If they say, ‘oh, I found a chest of my mom's dresses from when she was in high school,’ I say, ‘oh yeah, bring those in right away.’” After negotiating a price, Clapp takes the clothing to be dry cleaned and mended. If a piece of clothing is too far gone, she’ll reuse the fabric. A woman used her supply of vintage fabric to make face masks, which she gave away at the start of the pandemic, she said.

According to town records, the building was constructed in 1920. The total square footage is 3,786, located on roughly half an acre. Vinny Iannuzzi, of Vinny’s Deli, bought the property in 1982 when he opened the deli. The exterior door to the chicken coop is still visible from the back of the deli, though it’s boarded up and painted over. The property was once a trolley turnaround, when the area was still rural, Iannuzzi said. When a tree was removed, “we found horseshoes in it.” He said that Clapp is “a very unique person selling very unique items.” “She's a character,” he said. “She's got her own way of doing things, but she's hilarious. She is one of the funniest people I know, and a sweet lady.”

Ideas for a safe, fun Halloween with kids By Caitlin Houston Special to the Record-Journal

With Halloween just a couple weeks away, some families and neighborhoods are beginning to discuss plans for safe trick-or-treating.

n Deliver goodie bags to the children of the neighborhood.

Halloween costumes are being purchased and homes will stock up on prepackaged candy. This year will be a little different than years past as we remain cognizant of the lingering coronavirus. According to the CDC, traditional trick-or-treating may resume in 2021, but the CDC still recommends trick-ortreating outside in small groups and avoiding crowded indoor Halloween parties.

Connecticut state laws for a safe Halloween during COVID Last year Connecticut put together a list of high, medium, and low risk situations for Halloween based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Connecticut Department of Public Health. Their recommendations have not been updated in 2021, but many of the suggestions are still helpful!
