Local bike safety effort recognized by U.N. In 2018, the United Nations General Assembly established World Bicycling Day as a way to encourage “stakeholders to emphasize and advance the use of the bicycle.” “Bikes are freedom; bikes are fun. They are good for one’s health –physical and mental – and good for our one and only planet,” António Guterres, U.N. Secretary-General, stated earlier this year.

“Bikes are popular and practical, providing exercise and transporting us not only to school, stores and work but to a more sustainable future.” Recently, the UN distributed 13 awards – around the world – to those promoting bike-riding, and the North Haven Professional Firefighters Association was among the honorees. The group was recognized for its bike safety efforts in town.

A post on the North Haven Fire Department Facebook page states: “Congrats to the North Haven Professional Fire Fighters Association on being recognized by the United Nations. The NoHPFFA has been providing bicycle helmets free of charge to every first grade student for over 25 years. In order to receive a bicycle helmet, the students must visit fire headquarters during one

State colleges and universities welcome back parents, alumni

SUPER EXPERIENCE

By Jessica Simms Special to the Record-Journal

After not being able to host in-person alumni and parent weekends last year due to the pandemic, area colleges and universities are welcoming guests back to campus for events this year. Quinnipiac University, with campuses in North Haven and Hamden, is hosting its first ever Bobcat Weekend Oct. 29 to 31. “It’s a combination of both our alumni and parents and families weekend into one weekend,” said Karla Natale, associate vice president for community partnerships. “We’re doing a variety of different programming appealing to both alums and families, from fun things like a Halloween picnic outside to a talk from faculty members about how to help your student if they are struggling.” New York Giants hats and No. 10 jerseys were in abundance at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington on Monday night as Eli Manning was welcomed to the state at the 35th annual Franciscan Sports Banquet and Silent Auction. Pictured: North Haven residents Nick Corrigan, 11, and Biagio Mineri, 10, were among the lucky attendees who were able to meet the two-time Super Bowl champ and MVP. Aaron Flaum, Record-Journal

Natale said in order to make sure this event is safe, many activities will take place outdoors.: “People will be spaced out on our quad, we have smaller event capacities for certain events and for anything indoors, we require a mask,” she said. “If we have bad weather and something outdoors needs to be moved indoors, we have arranged larger areas where people will be able to space out more.” Stephanie Reitz, spokesperson for the University of Connecticut, said the university held its family weekend Oct. 8 to 10. The University of Hartford’s Hawktober Weekend ran Oct. 15 to 17, allowing both alumni and families of current students to visit campus. Programs included seminars about financial aid, information sessions about study-abroad and painting events. Caitlin Trinh, senior director of alumni engagement at the University of Hartford, said they got creative with the schedule and programs for this year’s weekend to be able to safely accommodate as many people as they could. “We thought about this hybrid model, where we would set up some virtual programs, which are obviously 100% safe, tune in from your home, enjoy the content,” Trinh said. “We set off some off-campus programs so we could take advantage of venues … and for those pro-

Bernard said tailgating was eliminated for safety reasons, replaced by a community tent and “Owl Town” — an initiative he started.

Fair and honest Editor : I have known Sally Buemi for nine years. For the last eight, I have followed her service on the Board of Selectmen. I have found, by reading her “I Was Just Thinking” newspaper column and from her contributions during town meetings, that she always has the best interests of our citizens in her heart. Whether it’s your hips, knees, ankles or spine, our team of experts can help eliminate your pain and get you back to the life you love. Our orthopaedic services have achieved national recognition. We were first in the nation to achieve Advanced Spine Certification, and have also earned Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement.

On Wednesday, Oct. 6, members of the North Haven Garden Club Crow Crew met on the town green to set up the club’s scarecrow display. The theme is a patriotic display of "The Grill Master with Grill and Picnic Table of Tasty Treats." It was designed by club member and project chair Maria Yankura, who created several authentic-looking dishes; including burgers, corn on the cob, watermelon – even a cherry pie. The display also includes bales of hay decorated with flags and star garland, pumpkins and mums. Stop by, take a walk around the green to see all of the scarecrows on display. Mattress recycling council celebrates The success of the Mattress Recycling Council’s (MRC) Bye Bye Mattress program in Connecticut is stacking up. After six years of steady growth, the country’s first statewide mattress recycling program has now recycled more than 1 million mattresses and box springs, resulting in the diversion of more than 18,000 tons of steel, foam, fibers and wood from landfill and incineration. “MRC and the mattress industry are encouraged by the continued growth of mattress recycling efforts in Connecticut,” MRC Managing Director Mike O’Donnell said. “We are creating solutions to Connecticut’s solid waste challenges, and we share the state’s commitment to sustainability and the environment.” MRC’s 2020-2021 Annual Report, submitted recently to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, highlights the latest efforts taken to continually strengthen the program and achieve performance goals. MRC again surpassed the established benchmarks for solid waste facility participation, units collected from mattress retailers, and participation from small waste haulers that would normally send units to

volume reduction facilities or waste-to-energy facilities. Overall, MRC increased the number of mattresses collected from the previous year by 12 percent to 213,540. To collect mattresses discarded from residents and businesses across the state, MRC has recruited nearly 300 entities including municipal transfer stations, waste haulers, nonprofit organizations, mattress retailers, hotels, universities and hospitals to recycle through Bye Bye Mattress. Residents in 140 municipalities have the option to drop off old mattresses at no-cost at collection sites, collection events or through their municipality’s bulky item curbside program. This comprehensive network provides coverage to nearly 98 percent of the state’s residents. Once the mattresses arrive at a recycling facility, they are cut open and layers of material are separated and prepared for sale. Major uses for the reclaimed material include carpet padding, insulation, filters and new steel products. For more about MRC’s impact on Connecticut, visit MattressRecyclingCouncil.org/Programs/Connecticut. — Press Release

Foliage From A10

Martin said “there are three main ingredients to the color recipe.” “One is the number of daylight hours, which is really our only constant year to year,” Martin said. “Climate change hasn’t changed the number of daylight hours yet, thankfully. The two other variables which we do see influencing foliage each year is the precipitation amounts and distribution during the summer and then overnight temperatures at the end of September and early October.”

Jim Lane, of Meriden, packs up his fishing gear after spending the afternoon fishing at the Bradley Hubbard Reservoir at Giuffrida Park in Meriden.

When the variables line up, the foliage changes earlier. “We have ample rain in the summer and then we have a couple of upper 30 degree, lower 40 degree nights end of September, early October,” Martin said. “That just sets everything in motion.” But with the seasonably warm overnight temperatures in September and October this year, the fall foliage peak comes later. “I think the coldest it got was maybe some 50s,” Martin said. “... We really didn’t see any early crisp fall mornings just yet, but I think we’re on the verge.”

stead of like last year, we had the drought, so they just turned color and fell,” Lessor said. “It was just dreary for

an extended period of time, so this will kind of keep the display going for a little bit longer.”
