Honoring veterans each November
The following was published in the Record-Journal on Nov. 11, 2013:
At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, an armistice went into effect, ending The Great War between the Allied Powers (predominantly Great Britain, France,
Russia, Italy and the United States) and the Central Powers (Germany, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Ot toman Empire and Bulgaria). In 1926, the United States Congress called up on the nation to mark, each Nov. 11, “the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far reaching war in
human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed ...” In other words, Armistice Day was created mainly as a day to celebrate the peace and hope that it would last.
It didn’t. “The war to end all wars” would turn out to be just a prelude to World War II the biggest, most de structive war in human history and to the many regional wars that have followed it.

Veterans
From A1
In 1954, in the wake of World War II and Korea, Armistice Day became Vet erans Day, in honor of American veterans of all wars. In 1968, the obser vance was moved to a Mon day, but a few states refused to follow suit, causing confu sion. In 1978, it was moved back to Nov. 11, where it re mains to this day. Back in 1918, President Woodrow Wilson had proposed his idealistic Fourteen Points, including the creation of a League of Nations to oversee the resolution of the dis putes that had led to the war, and to build a lasting peace. Sadly, Wilson's allies instead demanded draconian pun ishments and war repara tions from Germany condi tions that would contribute
greatly to the rise of the Nazis and his own country rejected the League.
The Department of Veterans Affairs notes that there is sometimes confusion be tween Veterans Day and Memorial Day.
Veterans Day honors veterans of all wars in which the U.S. has fought. Memorial Day, which originally honored those killed in the Civil War, is now a day when the Ameri can dead of all wars are re membered. The American Legion reminds us that Veter ans Day is a time to honor all of the men and women who have served in our armed forces: "Not all veterans have seen war, but a common bond that they share is an oath in which they expressed their willingness to die de fending this nation."
The VFW points out that we now lose more veterans to
suicide at home than we lose on the battlefield in Afghanistan, and calls on the nation not just Congress and the VA, but individual Americans as well to do more to help veterans over come their injuries, both physical and mental, when they come home.
Parades and speeches are fine, but that would be a way of truly honoring the vets.

Generational wealth: What it is, and how to create it
By Jeff Jolly
In a recent survey from Ameriprise Financial, more than three out of four Ameri cans (78%) said they have taken at least one step to build gen erational wealth. But what exactly constitutes “generational wealth”– and how can you achieve it?
The most common answer (44%), according to survey respondents, is wealth in ex cess of $500,000 that’s passed down to loved ones.
Depending on your financial situation, half a million dol lars may or may not sound like a lot of money. But one thing is clear: no matter how much you intend to one day
bestow upon your family and friends, it helps to have a plan.
If you, like the majority of survey respondents (68%), say passing generational wealth onto heirs is impor tant, here are some things to keep in mind:
Growing wealth
Be a strategic saver. Rather than leaving wealth accumu lation to chance, strategic savers set goals and work to actively increase their sav ings. They make regular con tributions to savings ac counts. Active saving curbs spending and influences earning behavior. Strategic savers may defer purchases, work longer, pursue higherpaying employment, or make other choices (and sacrifices) to ensure their savings goals are met.
Invest in stocks. Investors who are serious about in come growth utilize the stock market. Most experts recommend a buy-and-hold approach to optimize earn ings over time. A risk-adjust ed, diversified and balanced portfolio can help investors meet their investment goals.
Invest in real estate. Histor ically, property values have increased over time, making homeownership a leading method of wealth accumula tion. Investors may also di versify their portfolios with Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITS) and other purchases of property.
Financial wisdom
Financial values are another important asset to pass along to heirs. Many families find it beneficial to discuss their financial decisions with their adult children and
stepchildren. Clear commu nication can help establish realistic expectations and avoid surprises and conflicts
when it comes time to pass along your assets.

What prevents immigrants from applying for U.S. citizenship?
By Crystal Elescano Record-Journal staff
When coming to the United States, many immigrants may strive to reach the American dream and be come a U.S. citizen, but last year 85,170 applicants who applied for naturalization were denied.
Being denied citizenship is one of the fears immigrants face when taking the first step. Meghann LaFountain, a Meriden resident and owner of LaFountain Immi gration Law in Middletown, finds that as a lawyer she must assess every client's case and come to a conclu
North
sion whether or not they should go through with the process.
“Citizenship is the very final endgame in someone's im migration process,” LaFoun tain said. “When someone is undocumented and trying to get citizenship, they might get something temporary at first, and then something more permanent like resi dency and then after being a permanent resident for a number of years, they can apply for citizenship.”
However, obtaining “ some thing temporary at first” can be more difficult than it sounds, because “avenues to
legalize under the U.S. im migration system are ex tremely limited, and most undocumented immigrants in the U.S. cannot simply ap ply for a visa and obtain le gal status,” explained https:// portal.ct.gov/
The Biden administration has proposed giving the 11 million unauthorized immi grants who are already in the country a pathway to legal status, according to the Pew Research Center
There are an estimated 13 million legal permanent res idents living in the U.S., and of those, an estimated nine million are eligible for natu

According to LaFountain, if someone is completely un
documented and has no sta tus, they can be put into a removal proceeding to be deported, if caught.

“This would be a case where someone should have some level of concern about ap plying for citizenship be cause they could get denied and deported,” she said.
But LaFountain says rejec tion is typically limited to people with criminal issues, serious immigration fraud issues or who pose security concerns. “I think, right now, the risk of being reject ed is pretty low for people,” she said.
Keeping up with immigra tion policies is important in order to figure out when is the best time to submit an application, she said.
Mexico and Cuba in Top 5
In 2021, U.S. naturalization went up 30% with 814,000 naturalizations compared to the 628,000 in 2020, accord ing to the Department of Homeland Security’s annual flow report
Andrew Taddei, a social studies instructor at Wilcox Technical High School in Meriden, referred to the re port and shared the top countries for naturalized cit
izens in 2021: Mexico (113,000), India (57,000), the Philippines (48,000), Cuba (48,000), and the People’s Republic of China with 29,000 naturalizations.
Language barriers
Another challenge many im migrants may face are lan guage barriers. According to LaFountain, many immi grants may not understand what steps they need to take.
An example is seeking asy lum in the United States. Ac cording to the U.S. Citizen ship and Immigration Ser vices (USCIS), one must ap ply for asylum affirmatively or defensively by filing the I589 Form, which is the ap plication for asylum and for withholding of removal, within one year of their ar rival to the United States.
“They often don’t take not knowing this as an excuse,” LaFountain said. “But that can be a problem since many people may not know due to language barriers.”
If someone doesn’t apply within a year and then de cides to apply, they can get denied. An asylum case gets an automatic referral to im migration court if it’s de nied.

Costs and waivers
“Becoming a U.S. citizen can be costly for many,” Taddei said.
Language is also important for the English and civics testing part of the process. According to USCIS, the nat uralization test consists of two components: English language proficiency, which is determined by the appli cant’s ability to read, write, speak and understand En glish; and knowledge of U.S. history and government, which is determined by a civics test.
In order to pass this part of the test, many take the U.S. citizenship class. But in or der to understand the mate rial, taking an ESL class is recommended.
Process
In order to go through the naturalization process, there are requirements every ap plicant must meet under the U.S. Immigration and Na tionality Act and they must file documentation such as Form N-400, which is the application for naturaliza tion.
A application fee waiver may be available for some appli cants. In order to be eligible for the waiver, one must meet one of three criteria, according to USCIS:
USCIS reviews the applica tion and interviews all appli cants to determine their eli gibility to naturalize.
Following approval, USCIS schedules applicants for a required oath ceremony be fore a judge or USCIS offi cial.
In addition, applicants must be at least 18 years old and reside in the United States for at least five years.
The N-400 Form costs $725, which consists of two parts: $640 for the form and $85 for a biometrics screening fee.
“Many don’t have $725 to spend in order to become a citizen,” Taddei said.
This also doesn’t include the cost of hiring a lawyer who can take on their case. U.S. citizenship and ESL classes, meanwhile, are usually free. Many adult education cen ters’ offer free classes..
