North Haven remains in the coronavirus red zone. The color coded status for cities and towns is updated each Thursday and represents two weeks of cases. The trigger for red status starts at a rate of 15 cases per 100,000 people per day. The state’s most recent report, which was issued Nov. 12, showed 76 positive cases in North Haven. That works out to an average of 22.9 daily cases per 100,000 people.

Another election cycle, another set of embarrassing defeats for the leadership of the North Haven Democratic Town Committee. One would think that with anti-Trump sentiment at an all-time high and with Connecticut being a deep blue state with a Democratic governor and a Democratic super majority in Hartford, that this would be the year that NHDTC candidates could make some
great gains. Unfortunately, and with utter embarrassment and humiliation, the Democratic candidates both lost in a landslide. The candidates and their message were rebuked by North Haven voters. It’s time to rebuild the NHDTC from the ground up. NHDTC chairperson Kathy Grant ran against state Rep. Dave Yaccarino and See Criscuolo, A8

back to the state capitol for my sixth term to represent you. Whether you voted for me or not I want to make it clear that I represent everyone in town and will continue to have an open-door policy. Thank you to the RTC for their nomination and to all of my tireless campaign volunteers, some of whom suffered harassment and intimidation simply for defending my candidacy. I want to especially thank my campaign manager Frank Tropeano and his wife Melissa for their work on all my campaigns over the years. Everyone
knows that our national politics are currently divisive and toxic, but it hurts me to see how certain people are letting it influence their behavior during our own local elections. I urge people from both parties to treat one another with greater respect and not let our national moment corrupt how they speak of and treat their fellow town residents. Ever since I was a young naval reservist I’ve held a firm belief that everyone’s goal should be to honestly work together to accomplish the most good for the most people, and that will continue to be my goal during the next two years at Hartford. State Rep. Dave Yaccarino

Thank you for the opportunity to serve By State Sen. Len Fasano
Serving as your state senator for the last 18 years has been a privilege, a blessing and an incredible honor.
As I prepare to retire from the Senate, I could not leave office without expressing my gratitude to every constituent who put their trust

people together, and to overcome challenges that may have seemed insurmountable. By allowing me to serve, you have given me an opportunity to learn and grow into a better person.
To make matters worse, Grant, as chair of the NHDTC, couldn’t even deliver North Haven for Democratic senate candidate April Capone. This open seat was completely up for grabs, as Republican candidate Paul Ciccarella was a political novice. One would think that in this political climate and state, there would be enough Democratic support to ensure that at least North Haven would go for Capone. Unfortunately, no. Capone was soundly defeated, 62.87 to 37.13 percent. This is a complete shame and a huge missed opportunity for North Haven Democrats.
Reflecting on 18 years in the state Senate there are a lot of experiences we all went See Fasano, A12
We need to be more inclusive and less divisive within our party, and unite around Democratic shared values that represent the morals and values of North Haven. We need candidates that can be competitive in local elections. Celebrating hollow victories in obtaining board seats and the cannibalization of its own members is not that path forward, it’s a path to irrelevancy. Peter J. Criscuolo, Jr. is a former chairman of the North Haven Democratic Town Committee.

“Obviously, it’s disappointing,” Lyman Hall AD Steve Baker said. “I feel terrible for the kids. Today was another difficult day.” “I understand the decision,” he continued. “If you look at the numbers in Wallingford, if you look at the numbers in the state and nationally, I understand the decision.
The safety of our kids is paramount. Hopefully, we will be able to get this going later in the (school) year.” The Board of Control met on Tuesday ostensibly to review and approve a winter sports plan the CIAC had drawn up in consultation with its individual commitees, the Connecticut Department of Public Health and the Connecticut Sports Medicine Committee. That plan called for starting
basketball, hockey and boys swimming practices on Dec. 5, games as early as Dec. 17 and delaying a decision on the other winters sports — wrestling, indoor track, gymnastics, competitive dance and cheer — until Jan. 4. One major requirement: Masks would be worn in basketball and hockey.
community is going through COVID differently. It’s a challenge for schools and for everyone.”
Tuesday’s postponement to mid-January, as understandable as it was in light of the resurgence in COVID-19, did come as something of a surprise. While the CIAC had already delayed the start of the winter season, initially set for Nov. 21, it was to buy time to solidify the winter plan. All systems appeared to be on course for a Dec. 5 launch.
The state’s daily case rates have climbed from an average of less than 100 back in August to over 1,000 starting this month, including a peak of 1,606 on Nov. 9.
“It is a little bit more Draconian than I thought was coming,” said one area administrator. “I think we all anticipated that it would be a little earlier than that.”
The Board of Control met Tuesday against the backdrop of rising COVID-19 cases in Connecticut (93,284), nationwide (11.3 million) and globally (55.3 million).
The CIAC, in its winter plan, noted that if enough school districts rose into the “red” zone to the point where maintaining game schedules wasn’t possible, the season would be shut down and sports activity limited to conditioning and low risk non-contact skill work.
Short of that, the CIAC was advising individual “red” schools to postpone events, Said Maloney Athletic Direc- but didn’t ban them outtor Bob McKee, “I was a little right. “Red” schools could surprised, just because nev- still to compete, but had to notify the school district of er, in any of the discussions when we were on a call the opposing team. The CIAC has also set up an “alternative” season for March and the first half of April to accommodate football, which was cancelled in the fall. That alternative season now looms as something of an option for a delayed winter season. , something Wilcox Tech Athletic Director Steve Wodarski touched upon Tuesday. “Given the circumstances with so many schools in a distance learning mode and numerous towns being issued a ‘red alert’ status, the decision makes sense,” Wodarski remarked. “What remains to be seen is if the winter sports will be played while the alternative spring season gets started. While that scenario could force some athletes to unfortunately have to pick between two sports that they would have normally participated in, it would at least give those winter sports a reasonable amount of contests to participate in. I would imagine that we will hear those details in the days to come.”
That was back in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, however. Connecticut, shut down by Gov. Ned Lamont in mid-March, began to reopen in late spring and, by summer, virtually all youth sports were engaged in Little League, AAU and club seasons. R209181

The CIAC was hoping to stage a state postseason for basketball, hockey and swimming in mid-to-late February. The status of that is now uncertain.
The delay of the 2020-21 winter season mirrors, at least at the onset, the course of the 2020 spring season, which was delayed several times in incremental fashion before being cancelled altogether.

What I want to thank those in my district for is giving me the opportunity to serve the institution. The state Senate, and in fact the entire political process, can sometimes be overwhelming, but it is always informative. People from all backgrounds including ethnicity, religion, life experiences, income levels, social beliefs and viewpoints fill the building on a daily basis. Listening to their stories, their emotion-filled testimony, and how they experience the world changes your perception. That’s why it is called the “People’s Building” because it is the place where ideas are exchanged and discussions and fair debate are welcomed with open arms. The institution lives and is defined by the above fundamental function of government. Although senators come and go and society may change its beliefs on certain laws, it is the institution that must and will always survive. I am a changed person because of the people of the 34th District, the people of the State of Connecticut, and because of the Senate Chamber. I have changed the way I think and, most importantly, how I think. This change made me a better person on all fronts, as a father, husband, son, grandfather and as a lawyer. I always tell people if you are the same person on the first day you are sworn in as you are the day you leave, then you missed the greatest opportunity the institution has to offer.

work and raise a family. I love our state deeply and have been beyond honored to serve you. I cannot say it enough: thank you for the last 18 years and how you have helped shaped who I am as a person. Senator Len Fasano has represented the 34th Senate District, including Durham, East Haven, North Haven and Wallingford, since 2003 and has served as Connecticut Senate Republican Leader since 2015. He is retiring from the Senate at the end of this year.

That’s where the food pantries in our area come in, even though the annual food drives they rely on are hard to conduct safely. “Things are tough right now for a lot of folks, so we're seeing our numbers increase again,” said Sue Heald, food pantry manager for Master’s Manna in Wallingford. Master’s Manna had to cancel many food drives in the spring and summer, making the remaining time for fundraising even more critical. Paul Shipman, spokesman for the Connecticut Food Bank, said food drives have been down
across the state, as restrictions on gatherings make inperson events more difficult to hold. Other groups pitching in in Wallingford include the Police Department, a Boy Scout troop, Stop & Shop, and an anonymous donor. People and organizations in other area towns are also taking action, including the Food Pantry at the North Haven Congregational Church, Cheshire Food Drive Inc. and Cheshire Community Food Pantry, the Southington Food Pantry and the Meriden Soup Kitchen. Credit is due to all of these people and groups as the COVID crisis continues. This editorial was previously published in the Record-Journal.

One side effect of the pandemic is that more families find themselves in need, after so many months of losing income, and even jobs. And with the holidays approaching, that need is increasing.

This COVID-19 crisis is not over, not by a long shot. There are now more than 11 million confirmed cases in the U.S., with nearly a quarter of a million dead, and the surge in new cases this month dwarfs the surge that was seen in late summer. Hospitals in New Haven and Hartford have just banned routine visits, Masonicare in Wallingford recently had a spike in cases, and even Gov. Ned Lamont is in quarantine.
