SELFLESS STUDENTS
One of the largest Key Clubs around – with some 100 members – is located at North Haven High School. And the club, led by Hannah Auddino, has been busy giving back to the community. Recently, the club held a food drive for the needy, supported a road race in Wallingford, and raked leaves for veterans. The club has a busy December planned, as well.

NHPD surpasses fundraising goal North Haven police officers participated in No-Shave November, and as of Dec. 1, had raised $6,280 for the Connecticut Cancer Foundation’s Patient Assistance Program.
State Rep. Dave Yaccarino (R87), members of the North Haven community and student volunteers from Choate Rosemary Hall gathered Saturday, Dec. 4 to sort through hundreds of donated items for the Columbus House, a shelter for veterans in Wallingford.
”Thank you to all the officers who participated in No Shave CT 2021 and all those who donated and supported us,” the NHFD wrote in a Facebook post. “Our goal of raising $5,000 has been met … You can still donate to this great cause!”
Donations of new jackets and coats, thermals, hats, socks and gloves easily filled 40 large boxes.

“This annual winter clothing drive was once again a huge success,” Yaccarino stated. “Each year we collect hundreds of donations, but this year we collected more items than we ever did in the past. It was amazing to see so many donations coming in from our North Haven community. When I delivered all the donated items to Columbus House it filled the entire back of my pickup truck; which is going to help many people in need. This is a season of giving, and what better way to give back than to assist those who served our country and need some help.”

SEASON OF GIVING
The time of year for cooking fires Chief Paul Januszewski and the North Haven Fire Department would like to provide safety tips to ensure residents stay safe while baking and preparing their holiday meals. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, followed by Christmas Day, the day before Thanksgiving, Easter and Christmas Eve. To prevent seasonal cooking fires, the department wishes to share the following tips from the NFPA so families can prepare holiday meals without the risk of danger: Never leave anything cooking unattended. The NFPA discourages the use of deep fryers for cooking turkeys, but those who do use one should do so on a flat surface outdoors and at least 10 feet away from structures, including porches. Turkeys should be completely thawed and dried before being placed in the deep fryer to avoid flare-ups. If a grease fire starts in a pan, smother the flames by sliding the lid – while wearing an oven mitt – over the pan. If safe to do so, turn off the heat source. Do not move the pan, and keep the lid on until the fire is out and the pan is completely cool.
Keep children and pets away from the stove. Kids and pets should be kept three feet away from the stove. Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee can cause serious burns. Keep knives out of the reach of children. Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child. Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet. Keep the kitchen and dining room floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags while cooking or handling food. Test your smoke alarms and make sure their batteries are replaced if needed. Through Sunday, Dec. 12, the North Haven police are collecting new, unwrapped toys for those in need. Donations can be dropped off at the police department lobby. Recently, North Haven police commissioners Larry Lazaroff and Robin Wilson added to the NHPD’s toy collection. Throughout December, Lazaroff will be collecting toys, food and clothing at his business, Arnold’s Jewelers, 117 Washington Ave.
This year, as many families gather after a hiatus in 2020 due to COVID-19, the NHFD urges residents to consider taking precautions to limit the spread of the virus, including getting vaccinated or getting tested prior to gathering. — Press Release

ple, short-term losses will first offset short-term gains. Because of the higher tax rate for short-term gains, focusing on short-term losses can have a more substantial effect on your tax savings than long-term losses – especially if you are in a higher federal tax bracket. If you didn’t have capital gains this year, you can use up to $3,000 in capital losses to reduce ordinary income. You can carry over any remaining net capital loss to future tax years until you use the loss. Maximize contributions. Boosting pre-tax contributions to your workplace
retirement plan may reduce current taxable income while helping you build savings for the future. How much it may impact your current taxable income is based on your current tax rate and your filing status. Take full advantage. In 2021 only, an individual who doesn’t itemize deductions for the tax year may deduct charitable contributions of up to $300 ($600 for a married couple filing a joint return). To be eligible, contributions must be made in cash to certain charitable organizations but not to donor-advised funds or certain private foundations.
Seek guidance. If you are seeking to implement these or other significant tax-saving strategies, be sure to check with your financial and tax advisors for confirmation that the measures you are implementing are the most appropriate for you.
