Businesses pitch in to help North Haven FD
CAMP NO LIMITS
By Everett Bishop The Citizen
North Haven Fire Commissioner Peter Criscuolo proved that grassroots fundraising can be quite effective. On Thursday, July 11, at a North Haven Board of Selectmen’s meeting, Criscuolo showed the selectmen and those in attendance a check written out for $12,500 from North Haven’s Town Fair Tire to help support the local fire department. And this was only a drop in the bucket. Matthew Reid, 12, of Cheshire, and a mentor take part in Camp No Limits’ field day on the Quinnipiac University York Hill Campus on Friday, July 12. The four-day, overnight camp aims to increase the functional independence of children living with limb loss.
All told, Criscuolo’s
fundraising push brought in more than $100,000 for the fire department. “I went out and called a few of my friends. They donated the money,” Criscuolo said. “They gave it to me because I represent a wonderful place to live. They believe in the town they’re giving the money to.” Town Fair Tire was one of many businesses in North Haven that donated. Others included National Lumber, Edible Arrangments, F & F Mechanical and C. Cowles and Co. See NHFD, A11

HAMDEN — The more than 20 campers gathered at Quinnipiac University’s York Hill campus Friday, July 12,
were different ages, but they all had something in common — some form of limb loss. The participants had gathered for a camp geared just
for them, called Camp No Limits. The youngest camper was four years old. The oldest campers were teenagers. Since 2015, See Camp, A10

side? And no, we don’t mean the walk from your car to your office or the store. We mean real time outside, enjoying the sunlight, fresh air and your surroundings?
You may be asking yourself, “what?” We live in a world where a lot of things are instant— text messaging, sharing photos online, mashed potatoes! Laugh out loud at that last one, but it highlights how fast we can move from one task to another, maybe without pausing to be present.
If it’s been a while since you’ve done this, allow yourself to indulge and spend some time outside. Have a mini staycation in your yard or public park with a towel, good book and a nice cold glass of water. Allow yourself to be present with your surroundings and enjoy a slowed-down pace from your non-stop schedule. Not only can this be relaxing, but good for your mental health too.
This month, let’s change that. Summer is in full swing. The kids are off from school, the weather is warmer, it’s actually light out Be creative with how you past 7 p.m. When was the last time you spent time outSee QVHD, A16

There are many invasive plants creeping into Connecticut and choking out the native plants that have lived successfully for years in our state.
Finding a vacation place A retirement “getaway” for some may be to own or rent a second home in another area of the country or in a different setting from their primary home. This could double your housing expense, so you need to be sure you have enough cash flow to cover those costs. One option you may consider is a timeshare unit that allows you to “own” a share of a vacation property that can be used once or several weeks a year.
Do you know if that vine in your yard is mile-aminute vine, or wild morning glory? Is the plant that spontaneously appeared in your garden a chrysanthemum, or could it be invasive mugwort that may grow as tall as 5 feet? Is that vine with the red and gold berries that appear in the fall a good choice to use for your fall decorations? Or, are you risking the spread of a very aggressive plant that can strangle full-grown trees?

A small effort, a good cause
This may seem like a drastic step, but the General Assembly is allowing everyone, customers and retailers alike, almost two years to get used to the fact that the ban is coming, and to make oth-
er arrangements. Meanwhile, the 10-cent tax is projected to add about $27 million per year, for two years, to the state’s General Fund. As convenient as these everyday bags are, they come at a cost to the environment, which is why several countries have already banned them and other countries and U.S. states are in the process of doing so.

Connecticut is making a move against polyethylene. Starting on Aug. 1, there will be a 10-cent tax on those single-use grocery bags made of thin polyethylene. And starting on July 1, 2021, retailers will be prohibited from providing those bags to customers.

Camp From A1
Quinnipiac University is the only university to host a Camp No Limits program on campus. Limb loss or limb difference can include partially amputated legs and arms or entire arms and legs. The camp’s staff is primarily Quinnipiac occupational
therapy and physical therapy students, other volunteers and previous campers who had come back as mentors. Those volunteers developed the programs campers were participating in last Friday, which included relay races, volleyball, basketball and riding bicycles. Sarah Reid, an 11 year old camper and Cheshire resident, said her favorite activity is the field day.
“Even though it’s competitive you still get to be open with everybody, playing games,” she said. “And I’ve learned that there’s other people in the world like me. It’s really great.” Mary Leighten, an occupational therapist from Maine, founded the program 15 years ago. The first camp had four children, and has expanded to serve hundreds of campers in 10 various locations in other states, including California, Texas, Florida and Maryland. Erin Bracken, 23, a recent graduate of Quinnipiac’s occupational therapy program, was among the volunteers guiding campers through the various activities. Bracken said it was her second year working with the program. “For a lot of us, this is our first time, hands on participating with clients with limb differences,” Bracken said. See Camp, A11

First selectman Michael Freda thanked Criscuolo for the fundraising he did, saying that “I haven’t seen” this type of fundraising during his time in office. The money raised by Criscuolo went towards new helmets and ballistic vests for the fire department. Money for the ballistic vests was rejected by the Board of Finance in the 2019-2020 budget. The North Haven Max Sinoway Little League 10U and 12U All-Star teams won their District 4 championship games and advanced to the sectional round of the Little League World Series tournament. The 10U champs are: Rocco Ciaburro, Evan Dimauro, Evan Frosolone, Gavin Halovatch, Blake Huston, Liam Laffin, Lucas Mazzaro, Arthur McCormack IV, Blake O'Connor, Marcus Wearing, and Brett White. The team is coached by Andre "AJ" Huston and David Halovatch.

“Those vests being purchased, the taxpayers don’t have to pay for,” Freda said. Criscuolo talked about how important the new ballistic gear was, citing the rise in shootings across the country and the explosion of a North Haven barn last year that left nine regional SWAT team

“If our firefighters don’t have the best of equipment, how can they be safe enough to help you?,” Criscuolo stated. Criscuolo told the Board of Selectmen that he plans to begin fundraising for a new LUCAS compression machine. The machine creates steady chest compressions to help stabilize those experiencing issues with blood circulation or those in need of CPR. “Forty years ago I would’ve never thought it was a necessity,” said Criscuolo, quoting Ron Kanterman, another Connecticut fire chief. “Now, it is a necessity.” ebishop@record-journal.com 203-317-2444 Twitter: @everett_bishop

There’s so much of it, in fact — the U.S. alone consumes an estimated 100 billion grocery bags per year, perhaps 700 million of them in Connecticut alone — that polyethylene makes up much of the five major offshore plastic accumulation zones in the world’s oceans. The Great Pacific Garbage
Patch, the largest one, is three times the size of France. All that floating plastic is harmful to sea life and, once it degrades into tiny particles called microplastics, it enters our food supply. So it’s fair to say that today polyethylene presents a big global problem. But the

NEW BUSINESS
Froogle Furniture: customer care with good prices He was just about to sit down for a break, but instead, Robert DeSalle jumped up to help a couple who’d walked into his store. DeSalle is one of the coowners of the recently opened Froogle Furniture store at 370 Sackett Point Road The couple was looking for new end tables. DeSalle walked them over to a table filled with magazines and catalogs and he showed them a few possibilities. With no luck to be found, DeSalle led them to the opposite end of the store where he showed them a pair of end tables in stock. Again, no luck. However, as the couple talked about their issues finding the right tables, that

discussion led to a common connection with DeSalle – living in Wallingford – and more conversation. DeSalle explained why this approach, spending time with customers to understand their needs and make a connection, is valuable to his business. “You need to understand the competition,” DeSalle said. “A quick analysis will tell you the competition, it’s a cookie-cutter, generic experience. The selection is dwindling, customer service is dwindling and the sales staff are looking at quotas, commissions, and upsells.” In order to combat this, DeSalle has created a business model that looks to “provide quality, value and neighborhood customer service.” His ideas stem directly from his

Hope and Support Groups provide a safe and confidential space for parents, guardians and all others dealing with a loved one’s disease of substance abuse or addiction. The group is led by two trained facilitators, a licensed professional and a para-professional with lived experience. Recognizing that this disease affects entire families, the group provides a forum to share openly while receiving peer support, information and compassion, thus breaking the stigma and isolation created by the disease. The group meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the Middlefield Federated Church, 402 Main St., Middlefield.
“I’m frugal by nature,” said DeSalle. “I enjoy the frugal nature of, say, a T.J. Maxx or HomeGoods. The people who shop there are frugal, they’re smart. They’re finding treasures, unique one-off pieces.” However, DeSalle felt that the word “frugal” was a bit “snooty” and “cold.” So he decided to combine the word “frugal” with “Google” in order to allude to the thousands of possibilities that could come into the store in any given week. DeSalle takes the slogan “Never the same store twice” to heart, saying that he is always trying to move the store around and put new product out. Even deciding where to set up the furniture store was a strategic move. DeSalle was

familiar with the area, living in Wallingford, and knew Sackett Point Road had good traffic flow. He also found a vacancy situated between stores and businesses that offered tile, kitchenware, and reupholstering services. “We’ve had a tremendous turnout in the middle of vacations and the Fourth of July,” said DeSalle, talking about the store’s “soft grand opening” on July 3. “The community is loving it.” DeSalle has such great faith in the community appeal of his business that he is looking at opening two new locations throughout the state by 2020. “Some people are just trying to fit out a basement for their kids to go crazy on and not worry about if they spill stuff,” DeSalle aid. “Whatever the criteria of the qualifier to bring them in here, value is important, quality is important. And I think that’s probably our best value proposition. Maybe it can just be said ‘New for the price of used.’ I just want it to be said a bit better than that.” ebishop@record-journal.com 203-317-2444 Twitter: @everett_bishop
