The scarecrows will be out and about again this October

The North Haven Garden Club’s Annual Scarecrow Contest will be held on the North Haven Green this October.

The contest, which begins on Oct. 21, will feature community members and local businesses trying their hand at crafting a scarecrow. It will run through Nov. 4, with a pumpkin carving contest and costume parade on the North Haven Green planned for Oct. 28.

There will be one grand prize winner of the contest, which is usually judged by staff from the North Haven High School Art Depart-

ment. There is no registration required and no fee to participate.

Cindy Golia, a member of the North Haven Garden Club, holds many positions in the organization, including treasurer and publicity chair. Golia is also part of the Scarecrow Committee.

“Our first one (was held in) 2018 and at that time, we only had two sponsors, so it's grown quite a bit since then,” said Golia.

Bus service delays at start of year raise concerns

Parents want to see improved bus service, raising complaints at a recent Board of Education meeting that bus arrivals range wildly.

They said it especially creates issues for parents who are waiting for buses to pick up their children before work, causing them to sometimes be late to their jobs.

“We can’t show up if the

buses don’t show up, so this is an issue that’s affecting people’s livelihoods and it has to be taken seriously,” Joshua Borenstein said during the school board’s Sept. 14 meeting.

M&J Bus Company Chief Operating Officer Jon Hipsher acknowledged issues at the state of the year, but said the company has been working to improve the issues.

“We have, really, quite well

settled into our new routes,” Hipsher said.

Pace excited for opportunity to lead North Haven Rotary Club

The North Haven Rotary Club has its new leader in Susan Pace.

Pace officially started in the summer, on July 1.

Pace is now the head of close to 40 members of the Rotary Club, a service organization that, according to its own rules, must give away all the money it raises.

As president, Pace will lead the Club in fundraising efforts such as the Wine and Roses event that was scheduled for last Sunday. It is one of several events Rotary holds throughout the year.

Pace explained that the event began approximately 20 years ago and was inspired by the community the North Haven Rotary Club serves.

“There are a lot of winemakers that grew it in their garage or their basement, and we thought it would be kind of a fun thing to taste what they’re brewing,” Pace said.

According to Pace, the event typically draws hundreds of people.

Wine and Roses was scheduled for Oct. 1, but it’s just one of a number of fundraisers Pace will help run.

“On Nov. 12, we’ll do our pancake breakfast (where) we honor the veterans. (They) eat breakfast for free. And that same day, we do a 5K race before the pancake breakfast,” Pace said.

This money the Club raises goes to a diverse array of recipients. Pace says they’re “big on scholarships” and provide money to high schoolers going to colleges including Gateway Commu-

nity College and Quinnipiac University’s Health Program.

“This year, we’re talking about expanding it and including a tech school student also,” Pace said.

The scholarships go to students in different grade levels, right up through high school.

In addition, the Club provides scholarships for children who can’t afford the Eli Whitney Summer Camp programming. Pace also listed the Daytime Gardeners of North Haven and Bikers Against Animal Cruelty as some organizations the Rotary Club has donated to.

As president, Pace said it would be nice to see more young people join the club. Around five people joined last year.

“It’s difficult because we find that the 22 to 35 age bracket are very busy. You know, either they’re newlyweds or new parents, or they’re very active with their kids, or they’re just active, businesswise, schoolwise,” Pace said.

Current members can recommend new members, or people can contact the Rotary Club and say they’re interested in coming to a meeting. For her part, Pace joined over two decades ago, inspired by her father who was a Rotarian for 38 years.

Since joining, Pace has held a variety of positions in the Club.

“When I first joined, not knowing what they were asking me to do, they suggested I become program director, which (included) finding speakers to speak to the Club. And we meet every week, so that was like 50 speakers a year,” Pace said.

She continued in that posi-

tion for three years before she handed it off. Pace then did a stint as secretary until her job as manager of a local jewelry store interfered. For a while, Pace was just a member who tried to participate as much as she could.

“I told them that once I retired, I would probably be interested in becoming president. So I’ve retired twice before I became president,” Pace said.

She says she’s now back at work, but since she’s part time it doesn’t interfere with her presidential duties. Pace’s installation ceremony to the presidency was held earlier this summer. While it’s hard to pick a favorite memory from her time in the Rotary Club, Pace said that night was a highlight.

“My best friend from (when I was) five years old (lives in) California. She and her husband flew out for my installation, which is a big deal. I was very honored that they were there,” Pace said. “Then all my home girls – there’s five or six of them – they all showed up. It was a special night.”

As for what she’s looking forward to as president, Pace now has some flexibility in guiding the events of the club.

“Presidents can always sug gest other things that we can do as fundraisers so I’m hoping come the first of the year we’ll implement something new and different for us to do and engage the community in participating with us, hopefully, said.

The North Haven office of Feldman Orthodontics is one business that has participated in the contest before. Last year, they did a scarecrow rendition of the Sanderson Sisters from the popular Disney movie, “Hocus Pocus.”

According to Beth Reilly, treatment coordinator at the North Haven office, making the scarecrows was no small undertaking.

“We actually took these tomato cages, wire tomato cages, and that was the frame for the three sisters,” Reilly said. “And then we used fabric, we made homemade wigs out of yarn for each one of them. We sat and we made curls. We glued them all to the pumpkin heads. And we made homemade brooms out of

twigs and brush and so forth.”

The work paid off for Feldman Orthodontics: they won Best Business. Reilly says it was a good team-building activity for the group.

“It's nice to see how excited the kids get when they're on the green checking all of the

ballot and so forth,” Reilly said. “It’s been a lot of fun, we’ve done it for the past couple of years.”

Last year’s grand prize went to Lesley and Audrey Borrelli, who created a rock’n’roll scarecrow based on AC/ DC’s guitarist. While Golia said she’d seen

many impressive scarecrows over the years, she especially liked the display the Garden Club created last year, which was Wizard of Oz themed.

“Last year’s theme was phenomenal. We had a backdrop of the Land of Oz and the Yellow Brick Road,” Golia said. “It really came together.

We had all the characters. It was quite, quite nice.”

The display had Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and, of course, the Scarecrow.

Lawmakers, local leaders applaud grant award for North Haven

Hipsher said the school buses have “significantly improved” in consistently picking up and dropping off students at the same time.

He said the biggest issue has been staffing, as M&J has been dealing with the same driver shortage other bus companies face.

M&J is training two more drivers, but hopes to add a total of four to five more to allow for additional bus routes. Hipsher said the company prefers to hire people who live in North Haven.

“Folks that live in the community, maybe looking for a new opportunity,” he said.

Parents said the issue is not new to this year, though.

(STEAP) for towns across Connecticut, including $427,512 to the Town of North Haven. The town will utilize the funds for a new fire department apparatus garage and will match the grant with $106,879 in town funds.

STEAP funding is administered through the state’s Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) and used to complete a variety of town infrastructure improvements.

“My daughter’s a middle school student, she’s the size of a grown up right now, and it’s quite a tight squeeze,” board member Amanda Gabriele said.

Hipsher said students have to share seats, but none of the buses on the 19 routes are overcrowded. He also told the board he plans on having drivers do rider tallies to get data.

M&J will continue to gather data and look for ways to improve bus routes, Hipsher said. He also said the company is looking at technology that would allow parents to get real time updates on where a bus is.

“To say the school year got a bumpy start is a bit of an understatement it was really rough,” Borenstein said. “It’s not just this school year, it’s been for a couple of years now. ”

He was one of a handful of

parents who voiced concerns about inconsistent service. The biggest complaint was the wide range in wait times for a bus.

“I am spending a lot of time sitting at the end of my driveway each day, morning

and evening,” Jessica Bootle said.

Parents also said they are worried about crowding on buses. It was a concern some board members shared.

Board chairman Ronald Bathrick suggested M&J make that happen soon. “Let’s make sure that that conversation happens in the short-term, not the longterm,” he said.

Finance 101: What to consider when considering a remodel

Home renovations can enhance your living space and raise the value of your home, but they also come with many decisions and potential pitfalls. If you’re considering a home renovation, keep these tips in mind:

•Set a realistic budget. Know how much you can spend before you ask for the moon. Remodeling projects are notorious for running over budget. Once the work begins, your contractor may discover problems lurking behind walls and floors. A simple job can become complex due to unforeseen water damage or foundation issues. To accommodate budget creep, set your budget at the low-to-mid range of what you can afford.

Save up for your project.

Home remodels can cost tens of thousands of dollars. In our current economy, raw materials are more expensive than ever due to supply chain issues. Plus, interest rates have risen with inflation, adding to the cost of financed projects. You’ll need to be prepared to make a down payment (ranging from 10% to 50% of the total estimated cost) when you sign a contract and progress payments as the work is completed and approved by you. The most cost-effective way to pay for a project is to use savings rather than a loan. Don’t be tempted to use credit cards, which will inflate your total costs unless you pay off the balances on time and in full. If you must finance your project, shop for an affordable home equity loan. Select a lender with the most attractive interest rates, fees, and repayment terms.

Consider how your plans will impact your home’s resale value. In general, kitchen and bath remodels lead the list of value-add projects. Many other home enhancements provide only a nominal return on investment. – and some can even lessen your home’s resale value. For example, few home buyers are willing to pay a premium for high-end upgrades such as a fancy wine cellar or extravagant landscaping. Installing a pool, particularly in regions that don’t enjoy year-round sunshine, can make your home harder to sell down the road. At the end of the day, it’s not only about the money projects that don’t add to resale value may still be worthwhile if the changes make you happy and you plan to stay put long enough to enjoy them. Just be sure to consider the downstream financial impacts before you make any decisions.

Choose a reputable partner. It’s imperative to find a licensed and insured remodeling contractor who delivers quality work, on time and within budget. Ask people you trust for referrals. Interview multiple contractors and check their references and affiliations with local building associations. Expect written bids with detailed project cost estimates. Make sure you know who is responsible for obtaining and paying for local inspections and permits. The contract

you sign should specify agreed-upon materials and describe the process for change orders and other contingencies.

Keep good records. Maintain a paper trail to account for project expenses. Provide your tax preparer with receipts for energy efficient home improvements that may qualify for tax credits. Get receipts for all payments to your contractor, whether

New Haven teen admits assisting armed robbery of North Haven gas station

A teen from New Haven pleaded guilty last week to his involvement in an armed robbery of a gas station in North Haven.

Robert “Robbie” Smith, 19, of New Haven, pleaded guilty on Thursday, Sept. 28, before U.S. District Judge Kari A. Dooley in Bridgeport to offenses related to his role in the gunpoint robbery of a North Haven gas station last year.

According to court documents and statements made in court, ATF and the New Haven Police Department investigator identified an individual who is alleged to have committed a series of gunpoint robberies and a carjacking that occurred in late June and early July 2022.

The investigation revealed

that Smith assisted the individual in committing an armed robbery of a Shell Gas Station located at 195 State St. in North Haven on July 6, 2022.

Smith pleaded guilty to one count of aiding and abetting Hobbs Act robbery, which carries a maximum term of imprisonment of 20 years, and one count of aiding and abetting the carrying, using, and brandishing a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, which carries a mandatory consecutive term of imprisonment of at least seven years.

Smith has been detained since January 3, 2023.

This case is being investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) with the assistance of the New Haven, East Haven, West Haven, Ansonia, and North Haven Police Departments.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Nathaniel J. Gentile and Sean P. Mahard are prosecuting the case.
