On Oct. 20, the North Haven Memorial Library hosted best selling British author Ruth Ware to talk about her new thriller “Zero Days.”

It was a sweep for North Haven Cheerleading on Oct. 21 at North Haven High School, as the D10 and D14 teams both took first place at the Locals Competition. The D8 exhibition team also performed well at the show.

In “Zero Days,” a husband and wife team work as pen testers, meaning they try to find vulnerabilities in secure facilities by acting as wouldbe hackers and burglars.

When the husband, Gabe, is murdered, his wife, Jack, is identified as the main suspect by the police. Jack is left to solve the murder on her own.

Earlier this year, “Zero Days” was optioned by Universal Studios to be made into a series.

Ware published her first thriller, “In A Dark, Dark Wood,” in 2015. This was inspired by a conversation she had with a friend at a coffee shop. The thriller is about a ‘hen party’ – more commonly known as a ‘bachelorette party’ in the US. Prior to

writing that, Ware worked as an English teacher and a waitress.

The idea for “Zero Days” came about when Ware was

researching her 2019 book, “The Turn of the Key,” which is a thriller set in a SMART home.

“Once you've acquired all of that knowledge, all of those skills, you choose not to use them nefariously, but to try to make the world a safer place,” Ware said. “I was completely fascinated by the kind of person who would walk that path almost up until opening the door at the end of it, but then turn away.”

Listening to podcasts wasn’t the only research Ware did for “Zero Days.” In writing the book, she listened to interviews with pen testers, spoke to police officers about hunting people on the run, and consulted on medical questions with a family

“Whereas I think a twist is an answer to a question that the reader was not thinking about,” Ware said.

To Ware, this makes real plot twists much more difficult to achieve. But “Zero Days” is about more than just suspense.

“Fundamentally, the book is about grief, really. Jack's on this kind of ridiculous quest.

It's because she cannot deal with what has happened to her husband,” Ware said.
