North Haven gets top grades from state By Michael Savino Special to The Citizen

Balance Assessment Consortium, or SBAC, and SAT tests for the district.

The North Haven School District saw its testing scores improve compared to the rest of its group, while three schools earned “distinction” honors from the state.

District wide, 54% of students met the proficiency SBAC standards in Math, 63% did so in English and language arts, and 66% met the mark in science. The statewide averages were 42.5% in math and 48.5% in each of the other two subjects.

Superintendent Patrick Stirk told the Board of Education during it’s Nov. 9 meeting that the district was “well above state average” in testing at all grade levels.

SBAC tests are given to students in grades three through eight.

Three elementary schools, meanwhile, were among 154 “schools of distinction” named by the state Department of Education in accountability reports earlier in the month.

North Haven also moved up in rankings across its District Reference Group, which the Education Department uses to compare the town’s performance against other similar school districts.

After a lifetime of being deeply fascinated by bees, a North Haven man has begun his very own apiary. Richard Pierpont has always been uniquely curious about bees. He even recalls his summers as a child spent trying to catch them when he was swimming in the pool. Pierpont has dreamed of working with bees for years and recently decided it was time to truly indulge in this interest, so he started “Pierpont Apiaries,” his own honey farm. Much of what Pierpont came to understand about beekeeping was derived from dedicating hours to reading articles and watching YouTube videos. He credited Rollie Hannan of Hannan Honey LLC as a mentor who guided him through challenges he faced along the way, such as having a hive of bees that laid unfertilized eggs in the absence of a queen bee. Stirk said the district focuses on offering a “robust curriculum” to prepare students for tests, and is always looking for improvements. “Always work to do, but we have a good launching point,” he said. Assistant Superintendent Melinda McKenna told the board that the district also saw improvement in the Department of Education’s accountability reports.

Pierpont Apiaries specifically produces raw wildflower honey. When bees gather pollen and nectar from different flowers, it can affect the taste of the honey. Pierpont’s bees feed off several fields of wildflowers right outside of his property line. Raw honey is produced by only being strained before being bottled. He noted that raw honey can be an “incredible antioxidant.” Each Thursday, a group gets together to play dominoes at the North Haven Senior Center. First, it’s important to understand that a bee colony is often made up of three kinds of adult bees: a queen bee, worker bees, and drone bees. Each bee plays a critical role in the success of the colony. The queen is responsible for laying eggs and keeping the colony unified. Drone bees mate with the queen. Worker bees have many significant roles, one of the most crucial being collecting pollen and nectar. Pierpont explained that worker bees collect nectar from a flower using their proboscis, a long tongue that acts as a straw. Bees have two stomachs — a stomach for digesting and a stomach for storing honey. Once their honey stomach is full, they return to the hive using navigation memory, which Pierpont described as essentially being “an internal GPS system.” At the hive, the nectar is regurgitated from one bee’s stomach to another. Pierpont said that through this process, the nectar’s chemical properties are altered.

After going through this process, the nectar is placed in the cells of a honeycomb to dry. This is done by “fanning” the honey. Once the honey is spread over a honeycomb, the bees fan their wings near the honey. Lastly, the bees will cap the honey in wax. The creation of honey begins in spring, and the honey can usually be harvested in summer and early fall. Pierpont Apiaries has been in the works for two years, though this was the first season Pierpont was able to successfully harvest and sell honey. It was also a learning experience. “I was doing a two brood box management system,” he explained. “By the time the bees filled both boxes with comb, I was well into July … plus the 80 to 100 pounds of honey they had in the two boxes was for them for the winter. They ate all that honey plus the 15-pound block of sugar I gave them.” According to Pierpont, the job of a beekeeper is fairly simple once the management system is properly set up and a hive is established. To harvest the honey, a beekeeper scrapes the wax caps off the honeycomb frames, then places the frame in a machine that spins the frames. As the frame spins, the honey is forced out of the comb. Once a week, often on a Tuesday, he goes out to make sure that the bee colony is functioning properly. He checks to make sure the queen bee is healthy, that there aren’t any laying worker bees, and that the honey is being produced as it should be. “Tuesdays are my favorite days now,” he said, mentioning that he finds the process very calming and fulfilling. Pierpont hopes to eventually retire from his current motorcycle business so he can put his focus on Pierpont Apiaries for years to come.

A federal grand jury investigating the state police ticket scandal has issued a subpoena to the agency seeking records of motor vehicle stops by hundreds of troopers going back to January 2014. The subpoena, issued in late October, ordered the state to produce the documents by November 14 to a federal grand jury that has been convened in New Haven. The federal investigation is being run by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of Inspector General in Woburn, Mass., and the U.S. Department of Justice’s Public Integrity Unit in Washington DC. It was the second subpoena issued; the first subpoena, issued in September, was more general, seeking data the agency submitted to the Connecticut Racial Profiling Project, the group that dis-

DeLauro proposes law to help tenants facing eviction By Ginny Monk © The Connecticut Mirror

New federal legislation would allow wide-scale expansion of a right-to-counsel program for people facing evictions, building on programs already started in a handful of states including Connecticut. The Eviction Prevention Act, introduced by Democrats Rep. Rosa DeLauro, 3rd District, and Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey, would create a new grant program so that state and local governments can hire attorneys to represent tenants with incomes under 125% of the federal poverty level. DeLauro’s office sent out an announcement about the bill Monday. The members of Congress introduced the bill during a time when evictions have been in the spotlight nationally. During the pandemic, many tenants began to organize, and lawmakers called

So far this year, there have been more than 19,200 evictions filed in Connecticut, slightly less than the 2022 totals but still more than 2019. Last year saw the highest number of filings since at least 2017, the earliest year with available data. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted many of the existing inequities in the housing system, including that many people could face eviction after missing a paycheck because of illness or an unexpected expense. Data and

research also show that families with children, women and people of color, especially women of color, are at heightened risk of eviction. A recent study from Princeton’s Eviction Lab found that about 2.9 million children face the threat of eviction every year. The bill would also mandate the creation of a national evictions database through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and require that the Government Accountability Office report on representation rates of tenants and landlords, cost savings associated with offering renters legal aid, and the limitations of the existing legal system for tenants going through evictions.

Snowfall, rain and gusty winds hit Northeast

A combination of heavy rain, snow and wind brought threats of flooding and power outages to the Northeast on Monday, part of the same storm system that killed six people in Tennessee, including a 10-year-old boy, as tornadoes toppled houses and tens of thousands of people lost power. The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings through the evening as snow fell across Vermont and northern New York, where up to 10 inches of snow could accumulate. The weather service said that snowfall rates of an inch an hour were possible. Many schools were closed in Vermont, while the National Weather Service in Burlington warned of black ice as temperatures dropped on wet roads. In Boston, the National
