The Greater New Britain Chamber of Commerce hosted a webinar in February teaching strategies to safeguard businesses against internal fraud. The webinar was led by Jackie Jamsheed, an associate professor of accounting at Central Connecticut State University. To avoid fraud, Jamsheed said, businesses need to protect themselves both within and outside their own walls. That means business partners as well as key clients and vendors should be fully vetted. “Sometimes an employee can be colluding with the vendor on fraud or theft. If there is an invoice for $1,000, it is possible that it’s actually $800 and then the employee and the vendor are splitting $200,” said See Chamber, A2
Revaluation process begins As mandated by Connecticut State Statute, Plainville will be conducting a revaluation of all real estate in town. This revaluation will be effective for the Grand List of October 1, 2021. Tax bills for the new revaluation will be mailed out in June 2022 and will be due July 1, 2022. A question-and-answer fact sheet is available at the Office of Assessment and Revenue Collection and on the town's website, plainvillect.com. The town has contracted with Tyler Technologies CLT to assist with the revaluation. This process will be ongoing through most of 2021.
Balloon fest grounded again Citing health concerns, the Plainville Fire Company has called off the 2021 Hot Air Balloon Festival. A Feb. 24 press release states: “After much consultation and research, and in keeping with the core mission of the
Plainville Fire Company to protect and preserve the safety of our community, the difficult decision to cancel was the only rational option for this year’s event … [W]e hope to welcome all our friends See Balloon, A3
In the coming months, data collectors from Tyler Technologies will be inspecting all properties that have sold or have been issued building permits in the last two years. Additionally, all commercial properties will be inspected, and photographs will be taken to update town property cards. Data collectors have been See Revaluation, A2
