Skiers enjoy mild Student award-winners ‘embody the best of PHS’ winter weather By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen
Plainville High School students Kaylie Hall and Luis Arango are recipients of the first semester “Students Rock Award” recognizing their outstanding contributions to Plainville High School.
SOUTHINGTON — Temperatures were high enough at Mount Southington Ski Area over the weekend to allow skiers to slide between the slopes with jackets unzipped, enjoying mild winter weather and a plethora of snow built up over weeks of cold weather.
In seeking a way to honor students who “do the right thing every day,” the Plainville High School Mentoring Committee, comprised of high school faculty members and led by fellow faculty member Maria Colangelo, created the Students Rock Award during the 2009-10 school year.
Plainville High School faculty and staff members nominate students and vote to determine those selected for the award.
“We don’t get this kind of snow this early on,” he said Sunday. The above average temperatures were welcomed by families looking to take younger children out for some lessons, said General Manager Jay Dougherty. “I like the variety of terrain we have here. We have something for everyone,” he said. See Skiers, A6

“Kaylie and Luis are so deserving of this award which recognizes students who ‘do the right thing’ every day. As seniors, they leave PHS a better place because of their mere presence. We can’t wait to see where life takes them; they are sure to make
a positive difference in the world,” Colangelo said. Hall, Arango and their families were honored on Dec. 18 at a high school faculty meeting, where faculty

According to the nomination guidelines created by the committee, to be considered for the award, students must assume responsibility for their behavior, contribute to the school and community, and appreciate the benefits of a physically, emotionally and socially healthy lifestyle.
A cold snap in late November allowed the ski area to begin making snow and open on the second weekend of December, the usual target to start the season.
Instructor John Berry said skiers could enjoy the slopes while wearing a Tshirt.

Flu now blamed for four deaths HARTFORD (AP) — Four people have died from flurelated causes so far in Connecticut this season. The latest weekly influenza report from the Department of Public Health, which covers Dec. 15-21, indicates there was one new death. In all four cases, those who died were adults over age 65.
The report also found there were 49 influenza-related hospitalizations during the same week. The percentage of emergency room visits for influenza-like illnesses was 8.3 percent higher than the previous week. However, that’s similar to the level of visits at this time in 2018.
fluenza-like illness was also higher than the previous week. DPH said flu activity across Connecticut continues to be widespread, with a total of 203 flu-associated hospitalizations reported since the beginning of the 2019-20

On May 9, Butler expressed optimism that a deal “that works for CT” could be reached. “We’ll get there,” he said. Shortly after taking office in January 2019, Lamont and his administration spent months trying to craft a gambling agreement that didn’t violate the state’s revenue-sharing agreement with the two tribes — which own and operate Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort
Casino in southeastern Connecticut — but also included new sports betting and internet gambling. In exchange for exclusive rights to certain forms of gambling, the tribes currently provide the state 25 percent of slot-machine revenues, which amounts to about $270 million annually. The tribes have said they believe their exclusivity rights include sports wagering. See Lamont, A8

Lamont From A5
Lamont has also wanted to reach a “global gaming resolution that will avoid years and years of complex litigation” while strengthening the state’s gambling industry.
Months later, Lamont appears to be taking a different approach, telling reporters in December it might be better to “keep it simple” and push ahead with legislation in the new General Assembly session that authorizes sports betting and internet lottery games.
“Rather than maybe go for a whole hog, let’s find places Besides possible legal chalwhere we think we can get lenges from the tribes, the some agreement,” he said governor has expressed hope in avoiding costly legal entan- Dec. 20. “I’d like a global agreement. eral manager of Mohegan Sun, said passing a sports betting bill next year would be financially beneficial for the two tribes and the state, noting that competition from other states offering sports betting is expected to keep growing since a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in 2018 allowed for it to be legalized in every state.
Linda Vasile, Au.D., CCC/A, FAAA • Board Certified, Doctor of Audiology
“We’re hopeful that the governor and the state is going to be able to get that approved,” he said. “I think it’s gotten mucked up in this comprehensive gaming bill. And while we understand that, we understand that the state’s trying to look at gaming in totality, I think to keep on kicking the can down the road and every month that sports betting does not exist is another month where the state is not generating as much revenue as they possibly can ... It seems counterintuitive, with the current economic states of the state budget.”

“I think getting one thing approved that I think everyone is in agreement on seems to make the most sense instead of getting nothing approved, which has been what we have been dealing with,” he said. Back in June, however, Butler appeared optimistic that a second round of lastminute, wide-ranging negotiation, this time organized by Democratic House Speaker Joe Aresimowicz and involving the tribes and members of the Bridgeport and southeastern Connecticut legislative delegations, might finally address the concerns raised by Lamont. In June 4 email to Lamont, Butler reported the tribes had a “really good dialogue” with the mayor of Bridgeport and the city’s delegation “to come up with a comprehensive deal that encompasses many of the visions you laid out.” While Lamont publicly raised questions about the

proposal, Butler urged him not to give up on it. “Nothing will ever be perfect, but we can’t let the pursuit of perfection get in the way of progress,” Butler wrote in his email. “I believe when you have a chance to review where we are at, you’ll feel the same. Let’s see if we can get this across the finish line.” Later that month, more emails showed Lamont and Butler seemed optimistic that a deal could finally be reached. In a June 16 email, Butler wished Lamont a happy Father’s Day, prompting the governor to respond, “Back at you Rodney. Now let’s make a deal.” A couple hours later, Butler answered: “Yessir, I think we are close as we have ever been. Let’s get it done!” Ultimately, that second push didn’t work out, either.

members Brian Edge and Sandi Dowsett read staff comments about the winners and presented them with their awards. “This award, which is chosen by the faculty of PHS, is one of the highest honors as a student that you can receive here, in my opinion. These two students embody the best of PHS and are representative of so many of the incredible young people at our high school,” said Plainville High School Principal Carl Johnson. Superintendent of Schools Steven LePage stated, “Our society needs more models of citizenship and positive character. This recognition serves to reinforce the qualities that result in those ends, and I commend our high school staff and leadership for continuing to highlight and reinforce such important traits in deserving students.” -- Press Release

She was very passionate about numbers and enjoyed her role as a tax aid for AARP, where she helped the elders with filing taxes. Katherine was also highly involved with the American Red Cross and was a volunteer for over ten years. She loved to travel; from her summers at the family camp in Barkhamstead (Ampy’s Camp), to her excursions to Hawaii, Alaska, Germany at the age of 80 and Yellowstone National Park at the age of 81, she was always willing and ready for the next adventure. Katherine was a very simple woman, who enjoyed life to the fullest with an abundance of love and kindness to share. Katherine is survived by her children, John Swanson and his wife, Barbara of Leland, NC, Karen Swanson of Southington, Raymond Swanson and his wife, Debra of Plainville,
