Several projects underway
State, local leaders appalled by the events of Jan. 6
By Nadya Korytnikova Record-Journal staff
The economic development director for Plainville met with members of the Greater New Britain Chamber of Commerce via Zoom on Friday, Jan. 8 for an Area Economic Development webinar. The discussion focused on current and planned projects in the community. Berlin and New Britain officials also presented information. In Plainville, eight new businesses, including the Witch's Dungeon Classic Movie Museum, opened their doors in 2020. The town also kicked off a new housing project. The Carrier company began constructing more than 55 single family homes at Bradley Street and Camp Street. The project is scheduled to be completed this year, said Cal Hauburger, Plainville economic development and special projects coordinator.

State and local political leaders condemned and lamented the mob violence at the U.S. Capitol building on Wednesday, Jan. 6. Tilcon donates $22K in goods to pantries By Nadya Korytnikova Record-Journal staff
Tilcon Connecticut recently donated $22,000 worth of food to local food pantries. Pantries in Durham, Wallingford, New Britain and Newington will each receive $2,500 in goods. Another $12,000 will be donated to food pantries in Plainville and North Branford. The donations were made possible by Tilcon employees, who worked together to collect the food. Employees at Tilcon’s North Branford location also donated almost $3,000 in Stop & Shop gift cards. Tilcon supplies crushed stone, asphalt and concrete throughout the state.

The Twitter account representing state senate GOP members called the civil disruption “unacceptable in any circumstance as were all of the violent protests we have seen over the last six months.” “Violence is never the answer. What we see unfolding today in Washington D.C. is putting a black eye on our party and our Republic,” read the Twitter account of the state Republican Party, CT GOP. The top Democrat in the Connecticut senate, Bob Duff, called the events in Washington “treasonous,” and U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, a Democrat, tweeted: “This is an insurrection. And President Trump bears responsibility.”
The mob overpowered police, broke through security lines and rampaged through the Capitol, forcing lawmakers to scatter as they were putting the final, formal touches on Joe Biden’s victory over Donald Trump in the Electoral College. Five people, including a Capitol police officer, died as a result of the siege. U.S. Rep. John Larson (CT01) called on the rioters to be prosecuted. “After a mob of the President’s supporters stormed the United States Capitol, four were killed, and many of these people simply left the grounds,” said Larson, a Democrat. “Now that the initial chaos has broken, it is clear there must be a thorough investigation to find those who participated in this incursion, prompted by President Trump, and ravaged the Capitol building. They must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.” See Leaders, A11

Winter sports in a holding pattern By Greg Lederer Record-Journal staff
CHESHIRE — The new year has commenced, but for high school sports in Connecticut, setting up the winter season continues to be a work in progress.
That information was sent to member schools, but the CIAC looked forward to getting more guidance from the Connecticut Department of Public Health and the Governor’s Office in advance of its next meeting, which was scheduled for today, Jan. 14.
In a meeting Thursday morning, Jan. 7 the CIAC Board of Control approved mitigating strategies drawn up by its various winter sports committees in hopes of playing this season amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The CIAC is currently planning on allowing teams to start winter practices on Tuesday, Jan. 19. The governing body had originally hoped to begin the season on Nov. 21, but after the state put a pause on orga-

Credit union donates $24K to nonprofits American Eagle Financial Credit Union announced the recipients of nearly $24,078 in donations from its participatory funding program, Cash Back to the Community. Nonprofit organizations Healing Meals Community Project of Bloomfield, Dog Star Rescue of Bloomfield and Farmington Friends of Music of Farmington each received a donation of $8,026 for earning the most votes in AEFCU’s fourth quarter Cash Back to the Community program. The latest round of nominations and voting featured the most participation since the program was first established one year ago—with 168 local organizations nominated and over 5,000 votes of support submitted. Throughout 2020, AEFCU donated 1 percent of its credit and debit card inter-
change income to three nonprofit and/or 501(c)(3) organizations each quarter through the Cash Back to the Community program. Funding for the program is generated each time its members use an American Eagle Financial Credit Union credit or debit card. At the end of each quarter, 1 percent of the total interchange income – the fee paid for credit and debit card transactions – is being distributed to the three top qualified nonprofits as voted on by a combination of the Credit Union’s members and the public.

Christmas tree disposal Residents may bring their Christmas tree to the Transfer Station on Granger Lane for free disposal through Friday, Jan. 15. If the tree is transported in a bag, the bag must be removed and discarded in regular household trash. According to the website pickyourownchristmas tree.org, if some tree needles scatter inside, it is better to sweep them up; as needles can clog vacuum cleaners. Also, the online Christmas tree resource warns against burning your Christmas tree
in a fireplace or wood stove. Pines, firs and other evergreens have a high content of flammable turpentine oils, and burning the tree may contribute to creosote buildup and risk a chimney fire. According to the website, a Christmas tree can be placed in your garden or backyard and used as a bird feeder and sanctuary. Fresh orange slices or strung popcorn will attract the birds and they can sit in the branches for shelter.

In the winter, the CIAC sponsors basketball, gymnastics, boys’ ice hockey, indoor track and field, boys’ swim and dive, and wrestling. As an activity, competitive cheerleading squads also compete in a State Open.
“We are still planning on playing winter sports and state championships, but we want it to be in a safe environment,” CIAC Executive Director Glenn Lungarini said. Lungarini said that mitigating strategies that were approved were based largely on what was successful in the fall season, when the CIAC conducted a six-week season that did not include state tournaments. “DPH is recommending wearing masks indoors for moderate-risk sports and some changes may have to be made to some sports to allow student-athletes to compete safely,” explained Lungarini. “We still need to
“There are still some concerns over our higher-risk sports and there are some questions about having venues for indoor track. Right now, it doesn’t look like college sites will be available,” Lungarini said. On Monday, Jan. 4 the CIAC met with DPH to talk about the state’s health situation.
That conversation was also discussed at last Thursday’s meeting. “They spent a lot of time with us,” Lungarini said. “We gathered information and heard about their concerns for schools and the things around us.” The CIAC anticipated an in-

Indoor track, while considered a lesser risk, faces the challenge of facilities. Few schools have indoor tracks and most competitions are large, multi-school events held at places such as New Haven’s Floyd Little Athletic Center.
