The Plainville Choral Society will perform a program on Friday to celebrate the 50-year anniversary of the group. Entitled, “Past, Present and Future,” the evening will feature past members who have returned to join this special event, as well as “future” members associated with the group. Co-producer Sandy Butler had the idea for celebrating the past, present and

future of the group and took it to co-producer Debi Wishart Parker. “Few musical organizations have not only survived, but thrived, for 50 years and I thought it would be good to not only look back at our past, but also look to the future,” said Butler. A big part of that future is 31-year-old musical director Greg Wilfrid. An elementary school teacher, Wilfrid is bringing some of See Choral, A7

Lola Wishart will perform a piece made famous by Patsy Cline, “She’s Got You,” and past and present accompanists Mary Jane Peluso and Kelly Sharp will perform the 1st Movement of Mozart’s Sonata in D. Wishart Parker asked Wilfrid to perform a few pieces for the present and future portions of the program because, she quipped, the audience usually only gets to see his backside. The director will perform an original song as well as the traditional folk song “Lakes of Ponchartrain.”

Peter Peluso, who directed the group for more than 40 years, is returning to play his accordion in the performance and couldn’t be happier with the new life and vitality Wilfrid is injecting into the group. Said Butler, “Under (Wilfrid’s) direction, we have seen PCS grow tremendously these past few years, both musically and in terms of new and returning members. It is exciting to think what the future may have in store for our group.” Wilfrid said the median age in the choral society is slowly going down and said younger folks are starting to

get excited about the group. The director credits the members themselves for inspiring him. “It’s music. It’s community. It’s everything. It’s such a strong group who is dedicated. They care so much. And it’s energizing to make beautiful music,” Wilfrid said. “PCS Past, Present and Future” will be performed Friday, Feb. 28, 7 p.m., at the Middle School of Plainville, 150 Northwest Drive. J Timothy’s From A1

Since Adams and Welch took over the restaurant, it has been featured on the Food Network and Travel Channel. It employs over 140 people, up from 20 in 1980. Much of that success is due to the accidental invention of the restaurant’s “Dirt Wings.” An employee nicknamed “Dirt” — as in 'This guy's old as dirt’ – would get distracted after ordering his wings and ask the bartender to have his cold meal fried

and seasoned a second time, said General Manager Greg Gardner. Regulars started picking up on the trick in the late 1980’s and requested that their wings be prepared how “Dirt” likes them. “They end up very crispy and very flavorful and it’s a style that no-one else in the area offers, that we invented,” said Executive Chef Erik Wichert. About 350 tons of wings are served each year, including 13 tons over Super Bowl weekend, according to Nikki Vinci, who handles J Timothy’s marketing.

Remaking of a Plainville icon Around the same time the Dirt Wings started to take off, Adams and Welch, who are now in semi-retirement, decided to rename it with an amalgamation of their own names: J Timothy’s Taverne. “Just the fact that we were changing the name of a restaurant that had been here since 1789 was daunting in itself,” said Gardner, who has worked at the restaurant since 1981. “… but we felt that going from the fine dining to the casual theme required a pretty big change and the name itself had to change, so people’s perception wasn’t that this is Cooke’s Tavern just with a lighter fare.” The building was renovated during the change, expanding the bar and moving it from the basement up to the ground floor. Gardner said it was immediately apparent that the change was for the best the first day they opened as J Timothy’s. “Just the jukebox kicking in, people chatting and the energy of the place — we all looked at each other and went ‘Wow, this is it. We did the right thing,’” he said.

The basement dining room of J Timothy's Taverne, which used to house the blacksmith and forge when the restaurant doubled as an inn as far back as 1789. Devin Leith-Yessian, The Citizen

Though it’s operated as J Timothy’s for decades, the change is still a hard adjustment for some residents who occasionally refer to it as Cooke’s Tavern, said Nan-

Obituaries

BAREFOOTBAY - Edward Thaddeus Mikulak, formerly of Plainville Connecticut, passed away on Monday, February 17, 2020 in Melbourne, FL. Born in New Britain on January 1, 1936, Ed was one of ten children to the late Stanley and Alexandra (Gondek) Mikulak. He was raised in Plainville and married his high school sweetheart Carol Jean Ciccio. Ed and Carol shared years of life adventures, bringing into this world a loving family of five children. He was employed by TRW Marlin Rockwell in Plainville until retirement. Ed and Carol fulfilled their dream of retiring to Florida, enjoying the warm climate and visits from their family. But Ed had to still keep busy, and he loved working as a landscaper at a couple of different golf and country clubs for several years. Ed was warm, loving and fun-loving, and a religious man holding true to his Roman Catholic faith. He was proud of his heritage and was a lifelong member of the Polish National Alliance, and Polish-American clubs in Connecticut and Florida.

Golf classic returns in June Wheeler Clinic's 35th Annual Golf Classic will be held Monday, June 8 at the Country Club of Farmington. Enjoy a great day of golf, dining and fun, while supporting individuals and families in Wheeler's care through its Basic Needs Fund, which addresses a range of environmental and social factors that interfere with a patient’s health and well-being, but which are not addressed by other means of funding. The fund allows Wheeler com-

munity health workers to address environmental conditions in the homes, neighborhoods and communities of its patients that might lead to poor health outcomes. It also provides resources to address basic needs, or other items or activities that cannot be accessed through a patient's own resources and/or community-based programs.
