Youth groups, CIAC, YMCA herald easing of sport restrictions
READ ACROSS AMERICA
By Sean Krofssik Record-Journal staff
There was excitement Friday among the CIAC, area YMCAs and area youth sports organizations following the news that Gov. Ned Lamont was lifting restrictions on sports starting March 19. In Wallingford, the Wallingford Hawks youth hockey organization was pleased to hear the news. League president David Fritz said he will reach out to his coaches in hopes of setting up a postseason tournament in the coming weeks. “Tournaments were banned until yesterday,” Fritz noted. “Usually, he have our tournaments laid out by now. The Hawks would like to host a tournament to give our kids some closure at the end of the year.” The Hawks had already extended their season six weeks. Youth hockey typically ends in February, but due to the shutdown that
The Hawks have been practicing in cohorts since Jan. 19 and focusing a lot on skill development.
Under the guidance of faculty members TJ Riccardo, Todd Helming, Dave Gaignard and Facilities Director Steve Busel, club members – along with some other classmates they recruited – are painting the presentation space, building a light and sound booth, and adding projection, digital sound and digital lighting.
Fritz said the league has maintained safe protocols, and a 20-year tradition of taking six Hawks teams to Lake Placid, N.Y. was broken.
John Benigni, the CEO of the Meriden-New BritainBerlin YMCA, said participation at his organization has been up across the board in recent weeks, but has yet to return to prepandemic levels. “More people have been using our programs and are coming in to work out, and that’s because of the See Restrictions, A12

had delayed the start of the season until mid-January, it had been extended to keep athletes on the ice.
“We are happy to be able to hold a season-ending tournament,” Fritz said. “We are trying to create a sense of normalcy in this chaotic time.”

Obituaries Joseph A Lippia SOUTHINGTON Joseph (Sonny) Lippia, 89, of Southington, passed peacefully at his home and in the company of his family, Monday, February 22, 2021 after a courageous battle with cancer. Joe was born April 18, 1931 in New Britain, CT, the youngest child of the late Fred and Rose (DePoto) Lippia. Joe joined the Merchant Marines after high school graduation and sailed the world. Upon his return to Connecticut, he attended UConn and shortly after, enlisted in the army where he met and married his wife, Sharon, of 54 years while stationed in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. After marrying and starting a family, Joe and Sharon returned to Southington, where they eventually had 5 children. Joe founded a commercial restoration and roofing business that he owned and enjoyed running for several decades. He appreciated the simple things in life, he had an abiding love of nature, boating, a soft spot for stray animals and enjoyed cooking and trying new recipes. For many years he and his wife, Sharon, spent a lot of time boating, frequently traveling with friends and family and regularly vacationing at Lake Winnipesaukee and vacationing in South Florida. Clark Lippia. Joe leaves a host of friends, especially Shirley Tschinkowitz and relatives who will dearly miss him including his brother-in-law, Melvin Scott; numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great and grand nieces and great and grand nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Sharon, and his loving sister, Mary Jane Scott. His gentle spirit, quick sense of humor, wisdom and affectionate nature will be forever missed by those who loved him. He was a loving caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a wonderful man who will be in our hearts forever and who left us with so many great memories. A private graveside service was held on Friday, March 5, at 1:30 at St. Thomas Cemetery, Southington. A memorial service and gathering will take place at a later date post COVID. The Della Vecchia Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements. The Lippia Family would like to thank all the many professionals at Memorial Sloan Kettering whose dedication and loving care of our Dad conferred hope and the best possible care. Donations in Joe’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society/Relay for Life. For online condolences and directions please visit www. DellaVecchiaSouthington. com CIAC Executive Director Glenn Lungarini said the CIAC would meet this week to discuss the news. As part of the March 19 green light, sports tournaments are now permissible. Is there any chance that winter state tournaments will be staged after all? Not likely.
Justice Department withdraws support for transgender athlete case By Pat Eaton-Robb Associated Press
“The government has reconsidered the matter.”
The U.S. Justice Department and Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights have removed their support for a federal lawsuit in Connecticut that seeks to reverse a state policy allowing the participation of transgender athletes in girl’s high school sports.
Attorneys for the plaintiffs declined to comment.
The lawsuit was filed a year ago by several cisgender runners who argue they have been deprived of wins, state titles and athletic opportunities by being forced to compete against two transgender sprinters.
The U.S. Department of Education’s office for Civil Right last spring and summer sent letters threatening to cut off some federal funding to Connecticut school districts that followed the policy.
The Education and Justice Department’s move came just days before a hearing on a motion to dismiss that lawsuit.
On Feb. 23, the office notified those involved that it was withdrawing those letters “as well as the underlying findings and determinations,” and does not wish to become a party in the lawsuit.
Last March, then-Attorney General William Barr signed what is known as a statement of interest in the lawsuit, arguing the policy of the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference, the board that oversees the state’s high school athletic competitions, runs afoul of Title IX, the federal law that allows girls equal educational opportunities, including in athletics. In a filing Tuesday, Feb. 23, Connecticut U.S. Attorney John Durham and other department officials withdrew Barr’s statement, saying
“Our board will meet ... and will review Thursday’s news, but I don’t anticipate any changes as far as tournaments,” Lungarini said. Then there’s wrestling, a winter sport that never got off the mat this season. It was considered high-risk for the spread of COVID-19 and was not staged.
The CIAC allows athletes to compete as the gender with which they identify and has said it is following a state law that requires all high school students be treated according to their gender identity.
On his first day in office, President Biden signed an executive order prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity in school sports and elsewhere. Dan Barrett, a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut, which represents the two transgender athletes in the lawsuit, said the Feb. 23 action represents “a hint that the government, the DeSee Transgender, A18
Come March 19, wrestling, like all sports, is a go. Will the CIAC make anything available for those athletes? “[W]e will review the guidance with the Board ... to determines what that means,” Lungarini said. “I don’t want to comment on that without reviewing the material with the Board and committee.”

In the centuries following Patrick’s death (believed to have been on March 17, 461), the mythology surrounding his life became ever more ingrained in the Irish culture: Perhaps the most well-known legend of St. Patrick is that he explained the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) using the three leaves of a native Irish clover, the shamrock.

St. Patrick From A16
Records show that a St. Patrick’s Day parade was held on March 17, 1601 in a Spanish colony in what is now St. Augustine, Florida. The parade, and a St. Patrick’s Day celebration a year earlier were organized by the Spanish Colony's Irish vicar Ricardo Artur. More than a century later, homesick Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched in New York City on March 17, 1772 to honor the Irish patron saint.
