‘Adopt a Senior’ effort commences
In 2020, Make-A-Wish walk is a different experience By Everett Bishop Record-Journal staff
When the going gets tough, the tough stick together. On Saturday, the Make-AWish foundation hosted its annual Walk For Wishes fundraising event. In order to continue the yearly trek during the pandemic, the Make-A-Wish Foundation introduced a new walk where people could participate in their own neighborhoods while maintaining social distancing.
“They usually host the walk at Lake Compounce with hundreds of people. This is the first year they’re hosting a virtual walk,” said Plainville resident Kim Shumbo, who organized a walk at her home for friends and neighbors. “It started off with just me, my sisters and my niece and nephews and then I called the Plainville police and asked if we could do a social distanced walk,” Shumbo said. “And then it just grew from there.”
Shumbo and her family have been involved with Walk For Wishes the past four years. Her son Braden was granted a wish from the foundation in 2018 — a Disney trip, including a private, moonlit safari with his family. Across the state, people joined the walk to help raise money for children with lifethreatening illnesses. As of 2 p.m. Saturday, participants in Connecticut raised over $32,000. See Walk, A12
The “Adopt a Senior 2020” initiative was created as a way to enhance this year’s non-traditional senior year events and graduation day festivities, in light of the current pandemic and restrictions on public gatherings. The “Adopt a Senior 2020” program invites members of the local community to “adopt” a Plainville High School senior by making a financial donation, which will be used to create “care packages” for each of the 158 members of the Plainville High School senior class. The care packages will be distributed in June.
“We would like to present each of our seniors with a send-off that they will remember,” explained Plainville High School Parent Advisory Council Secretary Lisa Levesque. “The kids have worked very hard to get to this point in their education, and this will allow us to put together some really great tokens of their time here in Plainville and celebrate their accomplishments.” Members of the community can “adopt” a PHS senior for a suggested donation of $20 (up to any dollar amount). No donation is too small, and all donations will be used to purchase gift cards and other items for the graduation care packages. wish to donate to the “Adopt a Senior 2020 program” may do so as follows : Via check made payable to: See Adopt, A11

While end-of-year activities and plans for the Plainville High School Class of 2020 graduation on June 12 are underway, a unique program has been developed by school and district administration, together with the high school’s Parent Advisory Council, as a tribute to the graduating senior class.

‘Return the Flavor’ raffle supports local eateries The idea behind “Return the Flavor” is to encourage raffle winners to visit the restaurants and use the gift cards once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.
“This is a fantastic idea by the committee,” RTC chair Gayle Dennehy stated. “Our local restaurants have been loyal sponsors of our events over several years and we thought we would return the favor by purchasing gift cards for future use. “‘Return the Flavor’ is our way of giving back and helping in some small way to sustain our restaurants in Plainville, and benefiting our local Community Fund during this most challenging time.”

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act provides a one-time direct payment of $1,200 to individuals earning less than $75,000 per year ($150,000 for couples who file jointly), including Social Security beneficiaries. Individuals earning up to $99,000 ($198,000 for joint filers) will receive smaller stimulus checks. Payments are based on either 2018 or 2019 tax returns.
In a blog post, the commissioner of the Social Security Administration (SSA) has clarified that the SSA will not consider stimulus payments as income for Supplemental Security Insurance (SSI) recipients, and the payments will be excluded from resources for 12 months. Because state Medicaid programs cannot impose eligibility requirements that are stricter than SSI requirements, the payments should not affect Medicaid eligibility.

The coronavirus relief bill includes a direct payment to most Americans, but this has Medicaid recipients wondering how the payment will affect them. Because the payment is not income, it should not count against a Medicaid recipient’s eligibility.

How Your Stimulus Check Affects Medicaid Eligibility
The basic Medicaid rule for nursing home residents is that they must pay all of their income, minus certain deductions, to the nursing home. If the stimulus payment were considered income, it would likely have to go straight to the nursing home. Since in Connecticut Medicaid recipients cannot have more than $1,600 in assets, there was also concern that the stimulus payments could put many recipients over the asset limit.

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
During distance learning, communication is key By Steven LePage
While the social and emotional well-being of both students and adults alike is front and center during the current COVID-19 pandemic, Plainville Community Schools began an enhanced focus on expanding practices around this critical area several years ago. In the summer of 2018, members of the school district’s Central Office team participated in a “RULER” training program sponsored by the Seedlings Foundation and held at the Yale University Center of Emotional Intelligence. The training program was led by Yale professor Dr. Marc Brackett, founder of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. Dr. Brackett co-developed the RULER program, which focuses on the five learnable
skills of emotional intelligence: Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing and Regulating emotion. Subsequently, five teams of teachers from Plainville attended the RULER program implementer training, and last April, Dr. Brackett hosted an interactive RULER presentation for all Plainville staff. This past November, wholestaff and school–based training was held with a focus on teaching the “anchor tools” of RULER with each of the five Plainville school staffs, while each group also developed their own individual school charter. The initial focus was on teaching staff members to better recognize, understand, label, express and regulate their emotions and to support each other in the workplace. Since that initial focus with
adults in the school district, there has been a noticeable increase in the emphasis on valuing the importance of emotions and mutual support among staff members across the district. Further, a variety of faculty and staff lead mental health support initiatives and events have been held across the district over the past two years, sharing positive mental health practices and supports amongst district personnel.
With the RULER program embedded in school district operations for staff, the next step will be to formally roll out the program with students over the coming school year, a focus that is more critical now than ever. Since the move to distance learning in Plainville on March 16, district faculty and staff members continue to incorporate the tenants of the RULER program, and See LePage, A10 LePage

We have also developed several survey instruments to assess distance learning and gather feedback from students, families and staff members. Feedback from these surveys is helpful in gauging distance learning practices that are working well, and identifying gaps and areas that need to be addressed or refined including social and emotional, and other needed supports.
The deadline for donations is Friday, May 29. “We are looking at every way to support this special group of students. They are missing out on some important traditions of senior year but we are going to add some new ideas, and this is just one of them, that is going to make this moment special no matter the circumstances,” said Plainville High School Principal Carl Johnson.
We have a strong, high-quality support staff team from each school that continues to provide outreach, re-

How We Feel app People in Connecticut – whether they are healthy or sick – can help inform heath officials and doctors by using the How We Feel app and self-reporting their daily
symptoms through a series of short prompts. The smartphone or webbased application was created in response to the need for health officials and doctors to obtain more information on COVID-19 in the face of widespread testing shortages. It only takes users about 30 seconds each day to report any symptoms they may be experiencing.
