Push for Native American curriculum making gains
Seasoned Firewood Screened Topsoil Premium Mulch Decorative Stone
By Susan Haigh Associated Press
It has been a long-running goal of many Native Americans to have more about their history and culture taught in grade schools. New requirements have been adopted in Connecticut, North Dakota and Oregon and advocates say their efforts have gained some momentum with the nation’s reckoning over racial injustice since the killing of George Floyd. The legislation affecting schools has advanced alongside new bans on Native American mascots for sports teams and states celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day in place of Christopher Columbus Day. The push for curriculum requirements has not been without challenges, with some legislatures deeming

Golfers tee it up for Basic Needs Fund More than 130 golfers, sponsors and volunteers participated in Wheeler Clinic’s 36th Annual Golf Classic Wednesday, Sept. 15 at the Country Club of Farmington, raising $52,000 to support individuals and families in care through Wheeler’s Basic Needs Fund. The total amount raised since the event’s inception in 1986 is more than $1.3 million. “Last year, amid the pandemic, we served more than 50,000 kids, adults, fami-

There is a key aspect of creating an estate plan that you should not gloss over: choosing whom to carry out the wishes outlined in your will, making important decisions on your behalf. Select someone who's trustworthy, organized and able to juggle the job along with other life responsibilities. Here are qualities to look for when choosing the executor of your estate: • Responsibility — addressing estate matters quickly and communicating effectively with beneficiaries to make hard decisions when necessary. • Integrity — showing fidelity to your final wishes.
Harris
• Diligence — locating and collecting assets you owned and taking physical possession of them if necessary. Executors must secure, insure and appraise assets. They may have to make determinations about the estate's assets — which to retain and which to sell — and how the estate's cash needs will be met.
From A1
He has also anchored a variety of other ESPN shows including Outside the Lines, NFL Live and Sports Saturday.
• Comfort with tax matters — working with tax and legal professionals to prepare and file your final federal and state personal income tax returns, as well as any returns for prior years and gift tax returns if they weren't filed.
He has 30-plus years’ experience in television and radio news, and has received numerous broadcasting honors.
• Impartiality — making decisions without favoring one beneficiary over another. • Availability — settling an estate takes an average of 16 months, so your choice of executor needs to commit time and energy to the tasks involved.
The memorial walk is the first major fundraiser in 18 months for PARC.

• Financial responsibility — willingness and ability to manage an estate. If you feel that you don't have responsible friends or family members, you can name an attorney, accountant, bank or trust company as executor. Unlike a close friend or family member, these parties usually charge fees for being an executor, which vary from state to state. 244830
The organization has been serving people with developmental disabilities and families for more than 64 years.
• Prudence — your choice of executor needs to have suitable personal finances. People with debts and liens, individuals with no credit history or those who have declared bankruptcy are not good choices since they often can't get bonded, and many courts require executors to take out a bond as a guarantee that they won't skip town with the money from the estate. Also, name at least one younger executor. While you only need to name one executor to make your will valid, you should try to name at least one additional younger, healthy person, known as a successor or contingency executor. This person should be likely to outlive you in case your first choice is not available to serve. You want an executor who can handle hard work without hesitation, maintain their emotional balance, and manage the tempers and egos of beneficiaries. Probate is hard for everyone involved. The executor's role is to dispose of the estate with patience and expertise and to communicate with the beneficiaries throughout the probate process.
Participants are welcome to register at the event. Sponsorships are available. For more information about PARC and the 20th Annual Helen & Danny Coughlin Walk, call 860-747-0316, or visit.parcdisabilitiesct.org.

delivering his last COVID-19 update during the Sept. 13 council meeting. According to Plainville Town Manager Robert Lee, Lockwood will be accepting a position as a county health director in Florida. Lockwood was not available to comment for this story. “We’re going to miss Shane, he was hired right in early 2012 … he’s a very knowledgeable person and I give him a lot of credit for the success of our regional health district over the nearly ten years he’s worked with us. He’s taken us from infancy … he’s guided us through this pandemic,” Lee said. The district was formed in 2011 when Southington’s
then-health director was looking to retire. Plainville was simultaneously considering a shift from a part-time to a full-time health director, leading the two towns to decide to merge public health operations, Lee said. Lockwood was the district’s first permanent director. Southington Town Manager Mark Sciota said Lockwood was invaluable in guiding the town through the coronavirus pandemic thus far. “I wish I could say he was staying, but I can’t fault anyone for moving onto what they feel is a better opportunity. Speaking on behalf of all four administrators — Southington, Plainville, Middlefield and Durham — we couldn’t have made it through the last 18 months without him,” he said. The application period for

the district’s next director closed on Sept. 17. After that, the district’s board of directors will likely hold interviews, Lee said. The board is comprised of five representatives from Southington, two from Plainville and one from Middlefield. Lee, a member of the board, said he hopes to find a candidate with Lockwood’s skillset and calm demeanor. “We wish Shane well down in Florida. He's been a pleasure to work with, a great personality, very open … we hope to find someone who has similar qualities,” he said. The district’s public health specialist, Sue Jacozzi, will be serving as interim director during the hiring process. dleithyessian @record-journal.com 203-317-2317
