BOE approves $700,000 capital spending plan By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

The Board of Education approved a nearly $700,000 capital spending plan as district administrators fine tune their overall budget proposal. The plan was unanimously approved during the Dec. 16 board meeting, though members noted that it still requires evaluation by Town Manager Robert Lee and faces possible alterations by the Town Council. The money is nearly equally

You can't move forward without shedding dead weight By John M. Jaramillo

Here comes a new year – again! Is it my advanced age, or do the years just seem to pass us by faster? It feels like it was just a few weeks ago – and not a full year – since our last end-of-year routine in which we reflected on 2018 and made new year's resolutions for 2019. New Year’s resolutions. Remember those? Where do yours stand? How did you do? Oh, you don't want to talk about it? Fair enough. Let's focus on the future.

A3

Break those questions down further to begin sharpening your path through 2020: Who will make up your social circles? You are the company you keep. The people around you make you who you are. They can support and challenge you, seeing in you things you may not see yourself. Take stock of who you have around you and how they contribute to (or limit) your progress.

First, in 2019 we should ditch our insanity, which makes us believe we can repeat what we've always done, year after year, thinking that this time – this time! – we'll finally keep our resolutions.

Who are you going to help? Resolutions typically are thought of as promises of self-care, but helping others, a great gesture in itself, also makes us better. Providing to others through teaching, volunteering, mentoring, etc., makes us better in both those forms of sharing and overall.

It's time for a new plan. But in order to blaze a new path going forward, we need to consider a new mindset for resolutions. What do your resolutions generally look like? Are they solo journeys? Who else benefits from your resolutions? Are your goals too comfortable? While building up the positive, are you trimming back the negative in your life?

In which areas will you improve? Enhance and build upon what you currently have while simultaneously expanding into new areas – new knowledge, abilities, skills, or even relationships, You don't have to jump allin right away, but consider what you lose out on by merely playing it safe, turning your back on new exploration and curiosity.

Preschool storytime: Mondays, Jan. 6 through Feb. 10, 10:30 a.m. (no class Jan. 20). For ages 3 to 5 with caregiver, storytime will explore themes through books, songs, rhymes, educational activities and crafts. Registration is underway and is for all five classes.

Social worker: In partnership with Hartford Healthcare, the Plainville Public Library offers on-site office hours with a professional clinical social worker every Tuesday from 1 to 5 p.m. Residents may access this free service on a walk-in basis or by calling the library for an appointment.

What are you going to leave behind? You can't move forward or improve on anything without letting go of dead weight. Negative environments, toxic people, or self-critical thoughts may not be easy to dismiss, but you limit your progress if you don't at least try to do See Jaramillo, A9

Kwanzaa Celebration coming to PHS After 30 years in production, the Queen Ann Nzinga Center, Inc. is proud to present its 30th Annual Kwanzaa Celebration on Saturday, Dec. 28, 7 p.m., at Plainville High School, 47 Robert Holcomb Way. Doors open at 6.

The Middle School of Plainville welcomed Nutmeg-nominated local author Leslie Connor on Dec. 5. Connor gave two large group presentations to all three grade levels, followed by a writer's workshop in the library. Connor discussed her writing process, which students were surprised to learn begins each day with a brisk walk with her dogs to provide time to think.

As an artist as well as a writer, Connor encouraged students to find what creative expression gives them joy. She suggested that students write about those ideas they can't stop thinking about, as those are the ones that often make the best stories. Students were also able to participate in a questionand-answer session with Connor. Following the presentations, 32 teacher-selected students

joined Connor in the library for a fun and creative writer's workshop. She distributed 32 small boxes and instructed students to guess what was in the box and to write about that.

This year, the show will be presented in collaboration with Grace Church of New Britain and the Waterbury Chapter of International Links Incorporated, an organization devoted to enriching and sustaining African culture and people of African descent.

The contents were revealed, and each box contained a different key. Students used their unique key to write the beginning of a story and shared their creative stories aloud; which ranged from realistic fiction, to fantasy, and science fiction. The writer's workshop concluded with a pizza luncheon filled with enthusiastic discussions among students and the guest author.

The celebration of traditional Kwanzaa rituals will be led by Brother Alvin Carter, Jr., a seasoned Kwanzaa specialist, which will include African drumming and dance, reading of the Libation Statement, lighting candles (the Kinara) and making positive affirmations.

Based on the seven principles of Kwanzaa, the show demonstrates how the concepts of this holiday can be applied to everyday life. Playwright Rebecca Trapp, who had been involved with the Queen Ann Nzinga Center since childhood, wrote the script for the musical. It is fitting to bring the Kwanzaa celebration in QANC programming to Plainville High School, as this is where the organization and its founder got its roots. In December 1989, the QANC, then known as the Personal Enrichment Program – “PEP” – began its programming with a Kwanzaa celebration held at Redeemer’s A.M.E. Zion Church, in Plainville.
